The U.S. 2025 model-year lineup included conventional hybrids that do not need to be plugged in and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) that can drive some distance on electricity. It covered sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs, minivans, pickups and luxury vehicles. The Department of Energy’s 2025 model-year catalog is a lineup reference, not a live inventory feed: inclusion does not mean a particular model is still available new at a nearby dealer in October 2026. Check local stock and current dealer quotes before deciding.
What counts as a 2025 hybrid?
“Hybrid” can describe two different ownership routines. A conventional hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) combines an engine with electric propulsion and does not require routine external charging. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has a chargeable battery and can cover some driving electrically before relying more on its gasoline engine. Neither label alone tells you which vehicle best suits your commute: the key difference is whether you can charge and how much of your regular driving can use electricity.
The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) lists HEVs and PHEVs in separate sections of its 2025 vehicle catalog. The catalog includes models and specifications, but it is not a complete guide to present-day dealer availability or an independently tested ranking.

Sedans and hatchbacks
- Compact: Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra Hybrid.
- Midsize: Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.
Published figures apply to particular configurations, not every version of a model. For example, Hyundai listed the 2025 Elantra Hybrid Blue at an EPA-estimated 51 city, 58 highway and 54 combined mpg, with a $25,450 starting MSRP before freight. Its page warns that actual mileage varies with equipment, conditions and driving habits. See Hyundai’s 2025 Elantra Hybrid specifications.
Honda announced a $29,950 starting MSRP before destination for the 2025 Civic Hatchback Sport Hybrid and a 50-mpg EPA city rating on September 12, 2024. That is a city rating for the named version, not a combined figure or a dealer quote. Honda said the hatchback hybrid was beginning to arrive at dealers at launch; that announcement does not establish current stock. Details are in Honda’s release.

Crossovers and SUVs
- Compact and midsize options: Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson Hybrid and Santa Fe Hybrid, and Kia Sportage Hybrid and Sorento Hybrid.
- Smaller hybrid with AWD: AWD appears in some compact hybrid configurations, but availability depends on model and trim. The AFDC catalog lists separate FWD and AWD entries for some models; verify the exact configuration rather than assuming all trims offer AWD.
Hyundai’s 2025 Tucson Hybrid Blue HTRAC AWD was listed at 38 city, 38 highway and 38 combined mpg (EPA estimates), with a $33,465 starting MSRP. Other trims have different estimates. Check Hyundai’s Tucson Hybrid specifications for the named configuration.
Minivans and pickups
The HEV catalog also includes the Kia Carnival Hybrid and hybrid pickup and larger-SUV offerings. A “hybrid car” search therefore need not stop at sedans: compare passenger capacity, cargo needs and drivetrain alongside fuel economy.

Plug-in hybrids: examples for different needs
The 2025 PHEV list ranges from family vehicles to luxury models. Mainstream and family-oriented examples include the Chrysler Pacifica, Ford Escape, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe, Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid and Sportage Plug-in Hybrid, Mazda CX-70 and CX-90, and Mitsubishi Outlander. Luxury and premium entries include the Alfa Romeo Tonale, Audi Q5, BMW XM, Lexus NX 450h+, Lincoln Corsair and plug-in variants of Volvo S60, V60, XC60 and XC90. The AFDC catalog identifies the model-year PHEVs separately; trim availability and local supply vary.
For a PHEV, do not treat electric range, MPGe and gasoline mpg as interchangeable:

- The form of the 2018 version of the TS050 Hybrid is captured with superb accuracy: updated aerodynamics components (both exterior and interior), longer front fenders, and tweaked diffuser design.
- Interior features depictions of the driver seat, lithium-ion battery and more.
- Metal-plated part is used to recreate the silver section on the top of the cockpit.
- Also included are decals for the numerous sponsor logos on the number 7 and 8 cars, plus masking stickers for use in the paint job.
- Dedicated metal transfers recreate side mirror surfaces and headlight sections.
- Electric range estimates how far the vehicle can travel on its chargeable battery under the stated test measure.
- MPGe expresses energy use during electric operation in a gasoline-equivalent unit; it is not gasoline-only mpg.
- Gasoline mpg describes fuel economy when the vehicle is operating on gasoline. The AFDC catalog provides gasoline-only mpg, MPGe, electric range, total range, charging information, battery capacity, seats and base MSRP for PHEVs. Its combined PHEV value reflects gasoline plus electric operation for parallel PHEVs, or electric-only operation for series PHEVs.
As one example, the Associated Press republished Edmunds figures for the 2025 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid: 33 miles of EPA-estimated electric range and an estimated 48 mpg combined after the battery’s electric range. These are distinct measures for that vehicle, not a promise of what every PHEV will achieve. See the AP/Edmunds article.

The Camry figures are catalog entries, not a guarantee that every trim in each drivetrain configuration has the same economy. The Elantra and Tucson figures are manufacturer-published EPA estimates for the specifically named versions. EPA estimates are useful for like-for-like comparison, but real-world results can vary.
How to choose between HEV and PHEV
Choose an HEV if you do not want a charging routine
A conventional hybrid is the simpler fit when you want hybrid operation without arranging a plug-in charge. Compare its body style, seating and cargo needs, drivetrain, exact-trim EPA fuel economy and warranty. AWD availability and economy can differ from FWD versions, so compare the configuration you would actually buy.
Consider a PHEV if you can charge regularly
Charging at home or work makes it more practical to use the battery’s electric driving capability. Short trips may use substantially less gasoline when the battery is charged, while longer drives can continue on gasoline. Potential savings depend on charging access, trip lengths and driving patterns; they are not guaranteed. Before choosing, compare electric range, charging information, gasoline mpg after the electric range is used, and the vehicle’s seating and cargo capacity.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying one now
- Confirm the model is available where you live. Search local dealer inventory for the exact model year, trim and drivetrain; a 2025 catalog listing does not establish that a new example remains in stock.
- Compare like with like. Match body type, drivetrain and trim. For HEVs, compare city, highway and combined EPA mpg for the same configuration. For PHEVs, keep electric range, MPGe and gasoline mpg separate.
- Read the price exclusions. Check whether a starting MSRP excludes destination or freight, then request a current written dealer quote. The listed manufacturer price is not an out-the-door price.
- Check trim equipment and warranty. Features, drivetrain and warranty terms can vary by model and trim; confirm them in the specific vehicle’s current documentation rather than inferring them from a model name.
- For a PHEV, assess charging and depleted-battery use. Identify where you can charge and compare gasoline efficiency once the electric range is used against your expected driving.
