For a like-for-like conventional-gas comparison, use the U.S.-market 2025 Honda CR-V and 2025 Toyota RAV4 non-hybrid trims. The base RAV4 LE has a $300 lower listed starting MSRP and 13 more published horsepower than the CR-V LX; both front-wheel-drive versions are rated at 30 mpg combined. The CR-V has the larger published maximum cargo figure. These specifications do not describe the 2026 RAV4, whose announced U.S. lineup is hybrid and plug-in hybrid.
What “most popular” means here
Toyota called the RAV4 “the best-selling small SUV in America” in its October 22, 2025 2026 RAV4 announcement. That is Toyota’s characterization; the announcement does not provide an independent ranking or specify the measurement period behind the phrase. Toyota also said more than 6.4 million RAV4 models had reached U.S. roads since the model arrived in the country in 1996, a cumulative manufacturer figure rather than a current-year sales comparison.
2025 gas base trims: price, power and fuel economy
The figures below compare the 2025 RAV4 LE and CR-V LX, both front-wheel drive where the EPA economy ratings are shown. MSRP is the manufacturer-listed starting price, not a dealer quote or transaction price.

These values are from Toyota’s 2025 RAV4 vs. CR-V comparison. On the listed starting prices, the RAV4 LE is $300 less. Its 13-hp advantage is a specification difference only; horsepower by itself does not establish which vehicle accelerates faster or feels better to drive.

How the FWD mpg ratings differ
The CR-V LX is rated one mpg higher in city driving, while the RAV4 LE is rated one mpg higher on the highway. Both are listed at 30 mpg combined. These are EPA estimates for the named front-wheel-drive trims, not a promise of real-world mileage.
AWD ratings are different
Honda lists 2025 gasoline CR-V AWD at 26/31/28 mpg city/highway/combined, compared with 28/34/30 for its gas FWD model. Do not apply the FWD comparison ratings to AWD versions, other trims, hybrid powertrains or another model year. Toyota’s comparison also identifies the RAV4 figures as EPA estimates; ratings vary by drivetrain and trim.

Cargo space and cabin measurements
Honda lists up to 76.5 cu. ft. of maximum cargo volume for the 2025 CR-V in its specifications. Honda’s non-hybrid comparison lists the 2025 RAV4 maximum at 69.8 cu. ft. On those manufacturer-published maximum figures, the CR-V leads by 6.7 cu. ft.
Maximum cargo-volume figures are not a test of how many suitcases fit or how convenient the space is to load; measurement methods and trim details matter. Honda also lists CR-V front- and rear-seat legroom at 41.3 and 41.0 inches, respectively. The available comparison information does not establish a complete cabin-dimensions verdict against the RAV4.

Selected standard equipment differences
Honda’s 2025 non-hybrid comparison reports the following trim-specific equipment differences. These are manufacturer-published claims, not independent equipment testing.
- Automatic climate control is standard on CR-V trims and unavailable on RAV4 LE.
- Carpeted floor mats are standard on CR-V trims and an extra-cost item on RAV4 trims.
- Genuine leather trim is standard on CR-V EX-L and listed as unavailable on RAV4 trims in this comparison.
- Rear-seat reminder is standard on CR-V trims and listed as unavailable on RAV4 trims.
Equipment can change by trim and model year, so check the exact vehicle’s window sticker and current manufacturer specifications before buying.

How to read the 2026 model-year change
The 2025 gas comparison should not be carried forward as a 2026 gas-versus-gas matchup. Toyota’s 2026 announcement describes hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains and said those models were expected in U.S. dealerships in December 2025. Toyota’s 2026 model page presents the LE as a hybrid with a listed $31,900 MSRP and up to 47 city/40 highway estimated mpg, with applicable ratings dependent on trim and drivetrain. Those 2026 hybrid figures are not comparable to the 2025 non-hybrid FWD ratings above.

For the specific 2025 base-trim figures, the RAV4 LE starts lower and publishes more horsepower; the CR-V LX has a one-mpg city advantage and both are rated at 30 mpg combined. The CR-V also has the higher manufacturer-published maximum cargo figure. Those facts can narrow a shortlist, but the cited material does not establish real-world acceleration, comparative reliability, owner satisfaction, transaction prices or a complete cost-of-ownership winner.
