Who was on pole in Austin?
Max Verstappen took pole with a 1:32.510, beating Norris by 0.291 seconds. Norris qualified second in 1:32.801, while Leclerc was only 0.006 seconds farther back in third with a 1:32.807.
Russell qualified fourth in 1:32.826, just 0.019 seconds behind Leclerc. Hamilton completed the top five for Ferrari with a 1:32.912, and Piastri qualified sixth for McLaren in 1:33.084.
The top 10 reached Q3. The qualifying classification therefore put Verstappen, Norris, Leclerc, Russell, Hamilton, Piastri, Antonelli, Bearman, Sainz and Alonso into the leading 10 places before penalties and special start permissions were taken into account.
Why the final grid differed from qualifying
Lance Stroll dropped to 19th
Stroll recorded a 1:34.540 qualifying time, which was faster than Albon’s 1:34.690. However, that was not enough to determine his final starting position. Stroll received a five-place grid penalty for causing a collision during the Sprint and consequently started 19th.
That penalty is why the grid table should not be read as a simple list of qualifying lap times. Stroll’s raw qualifying position and his actual race starting position were different.

Isack Hadjar was allowed to start without a qualifying time
Hadjar did not set a qualifying lap, but the stewards permitted him to take part in the Grand Prix. He started from 20th and occupied the back of the final grid.
Being listed on the final grid in this situation does not mean that Hadjar had a conventional qualifying time. His place followed the stewards’ permission to start, as recorded in the final-grid documents.
Key features of the Austin grid
- Verstappen and Norris shared the front row: Red Bull Racing started first, with McLaren immediately alongside.
- Ferrari put both cars in the top five: Leclerc was third and Hamilton fifth, with Russell’s Mercedes between them in fourth.
- McLaren had a split starting position: Norris began second, while teammate Piastri started sixth.
- Mercedes also placed both cars in the top seven: Russell was fourth and Kimi Antonelli seventh.
- Haas reached the top 10 with Bearman: Bearman started eighth, while Ocon began 17th.
- Williams split its cars: Sainz started ninth, Albon 18th.
- The back row was affected by unusual circumstances: Stroll’s penalty put him 19th and Hadjar started 20th after receiving permission without a qualifying lap.
How qualifying set up the race
Verstappen’s pole lap gave Red Bull the best starting position for the uphill run toward Turn 1 at COTA. Norris had the adjacent front-row slot, creating the immediate opening-lap contest at the head of the field.
Behind them, the second row contained Leclerc and Russell, while Hamilton and Piastri formed the third row. The narrow gaps among the leading qualifiers made small differences in launch, tyre preparation and the run to Turn 1 particularly important. The grid itself establishes those starting positions; it does not, by itself, establish the race strategy or the eventual result.
Austin’s Sprint format also meant the weekend had several separate classifications. Practice 1 and Sprint Qualifying took place on Friday, followed by the Sprint and Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday. The Grand Prix was held on Sunday, October 19, 2025. The Sprint starting grid and Sprint result should not be confused with the final grid for the main race.

Qualifying order versus final starting order
For historical F1 results, these terms have different meanings:
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Qualifying classification | The order produced by drivers’ qualifying performances, including their Q1, Q2 or Q3 results. |
| Grid penalty | A sporting penalty that changes where a driver starts relative to the qualifying result. |
| Final starting grid | The official race order after penalties, non-starts and steward decisions have been applied. |
For this race, the most important examples are Stroll and Hadjar. Stroll’s qualifying performance did not translate directly to his starting slot because of the five-place penalty. Hadjar had no qualifying lap but was included at the back after the stewards permitted him to start.
