Lando Norris won the 2025 Formula 1 São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos, leading Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli and a remarkable Max Verstappen, who recovered from a pit-lane start and an early puncture to finish third. The race was held on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in São Paulo, Brazil.
Although it is commonly called the Brazilian Grand Prix, Formula 1’s official event title was the Formula 1 MSC Cruises Grande Prêmio de São Paulo 2025. Norris started from pole and won the 71-lap race by 10.388 seconds.
2025 São Paulo Grand Prix results
The official classification put Norris ahead of Antonelli, Verstappen, George Russell and Oscar Piastri. Piastri’s fifth-place result is the final penalty-adjusted classification; he should not be described as a podium finisher.

Verstappen went from the pit lane to third
Verstappen’s podium was the defining recovery drive of the race. He did not start from the back of the grid: Red Bull sent him from the pit lane after making car changes under parc fermé conditions. Those changes followed his elimination in 16th place during qualifying.
The difficult start became even more costly when Verstappen suffered an early puncture and had to pit. That dropped him further behind the leaders, but the race’s Safety Car periods, pit-stop sequence and changing tyre situation gave Red Bull an opportunity to recover track position. Verstappen steadily climbed through the field and reached third by the finish.
Formula 1 described the result as a pit-lane-to-podium comeback. The final margin shows how close the recovery came to producing an even higher finish: Verstappen was 10.750 seconds behind Norris, but just 0.362 seconds behind Antonelli. The result was especially notable because Verstappen had overcome both a pit-lane start and an early puncture rather than merely gaining places from a normal grid position.
Norris controlled the race from pole
Norris began from pole and kept the lead through the opening Safety Car phase and the restart that followed. Once racing resumed, Antonelli moved into second while Russell held fourth, leaving the two McLarens and two Mercedes drivers among the front-running cars.

The victory extended his championship lead, although the Grand Prix result alone should not be used to state an exact updated championship total without a separate, verified standings source. The race was part of a Sprint-format weekend, so the overall weekend points picture also included the earlier Sprint.

What happened at Turn 1?
The race began behind the Safety Car after Gabriel Bortoleto crashed at his home event. After the restart, a separate incident at Turn 1 involved Piastri, Antonelli and Charles Leclerc.

Antonelli then made contact with Leclerc’s Ferrari. The stewards gave Piastri a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision, and the penalty was reflected in his final fifth-place result. Leclerc retired from the race.
The incident damaged Mercedes’ and Ferrari’s cars while also disrupting the early order. It is more accurate to describe Piastri as the driver penalized for causing the collision than to assign a broader judgment of intent or blame beyond the official finding.
A costly Ferrari race
Leclerc was one of the early retirements after the Turn 1 contact. Lewis Hamilton also retired for Ferrari after sustaining damage, making the São Paulo weekend particularly damaging for the team. Neither Ferrari driver was classified among the top five finishers.

The supplied race reporting supports the retirements and damage, but a detailed reconstruction of every Ferrari incident would require additional event-by-event timing and steward documentation. For the principal result, the key point is that both Leclerc and Hamilton failed to finish while Norris, Antonelli and Verstappen occupied the top three positions.

What the result means
Norris converted pole position into a controlled victory, giving McLaren the race win. Antonelli delivered a second-place finish for Mercedes and stood up to late pressure from Verstappen, while Russell completed a strong Mercedes double result in fourth.
Verstappen’s third place was the standout individual recovery. Starting from the pit lane, losing further ground with a puncture and still reaching the podium made his result far more significant than the final gap to the winner suggests. Piastri’s fifth place, meanwhile, reflected the impact of the Turn 1 penalty and left McLaren with the winner and fifth-place finisher rather than a second podium car.
