Mercedes also placed Kimi Antonelli fourth, 21.760 seconds from the lead. That gave the team a strong double result, with both cars finishing ahead of the leading McLaren of Lando Norris.
What happened to Oscar Piastri?
Piastri’s race ended at Turn 5 on lap one. The McLaren driver started ninth after a difficult qualifying session, but his race began to unravel as soon as the lights went out.
- Piastri anticipated the start and made a launch error.
- The car went into anti-stall, costing him positions immediately.
- While attempting to recover, he approached Turn 5 too quickly.
- The front-left tyre locked, and the McLaren slid into the outside barrier.
The incident was therefore an opening-lap crash rather than a later-race collision. Piastri later accepted responsibility, saying he had anticipated the start and had not properly accounted for the dirty air and low grip before entering the corner. His explanation should be treated as the driver’s account of the incident, not as evidence of a separate mechanical failure.
The FIA classification also lists a five-second penalty for a false start involving car 81. That penalty was separate from the crash and did not cause the retirement. Piastri completed zero laps, was not classified, and scored no points.

Sainz delivers Williams’ first podium of 2025
Sainz’s third place was one of the defining results of the race. It was Williams’ first podium of the 2025 season and rewarded a strong weekend from the team at a circuit where straight-line speed, braking stability and confidence through the narrow sections all matter.
His result also came ahead of both Ferrari drivers. Hamilton finished eighth and Leclerc ninth, with just 0.464 seconds separating the Ferraris at the flag. Racing Bulls put both drivers in the points: Lawson finished fifth and Hadjar tenth. Tsunoda was sixth in the second Red Bull, while Norris’s seventh-place finish limited McLaren’s points haul after Piastri’s retirement.
What the result means for the championship
Piastri’s zero-point finish was costly, but it did not completely transform the title fight. Norris scored six points for seventh, so Piastri’s advantage over his McLaren teammate narrowed from 31 points to 25 rather than disappearing altogether.

Verstappen’s victory was nevertheless a major gain for Red Bull. It was his second win in a row and came on a weekend when McLaren lost one car immediately and could only bring its other driver home seventh. Russell’s 18 points also strengthened Mercedes’ position after its double top-four finish.
The sensible interpretation is a significant swing, not a total championship reversal. Piastri remains ahead of Norris in the points picture described after the race, and one result does not erase McLaren’s broader season-long advantage. But a win for Verstappen, a difficult day for Piastri and only sixth place for Norris gave the championship battle fresh momentum.
When and where was the race held?
The Formula 1 Qatar Airways Azerbaijan Grand Prix took place on September 21, 2025, at Baku City Circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan. The official event listing covered the full race weekend from September 19 through September 21.

Bottom line
Verstappen was the clear winner in Baku, taking pole, the race victory and fastest lap. Russell and Sainz joined him on the podium, while Piastri’s championship challenge suffered a sharp setback when a launch error, anti-stall and a Turn 5 lock-up ended his race on the opening lap. Norris’s seventh place reduced Piastri’s lead by six points, but the Azerbaijan result alone did not overturn the championship standings.
