The 2025 Chevrolet Colorado is a crew-cab-only midsize pickup with one engine across six trims: a 310-hp, 430-lb-ft 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder paired with an eight-speed transmission. Chevrolet lists starting prices from $31,900 for the WT to $49,600 for the ZR2. Its headline 7,700-pound tow rating applies only to qualifying non-ZR2 configurations with the required equipment; the ZR2 is rated for up to 6,000 pounds.
That makes the Colorado’s main decision less about engine output and more about configuration: how much you want to spend, whether you need four-wheel drive or off-road hardware, and what the exact truck can tow and carry once loaded. The figures below are published specifications and source-attributed assessments, not results from a road test.

These are Chevrolet’s listed starting prices for the 2025 model, not dealer quotes or guaranteed transaction prices. Taxes, destination, dealer charges, selected options, regional inventory, and incentives can affect what a buyer pays.

| Trim | Chevrolet-listed starting price | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| WT | $31,900 | 17-inch wheels, all-season tires, Chevy Safety Assist, 11.3-inch center touchscreen, and 11-inch digital driver display. |
| Custom | $33,045 | 18-inch black aluminum wheels and black badges. |
| LT | $35,800 | EZ Lift and Lower tailgate with StowFlex storage; remote start with Keyless Open & Start. |
| Trail Boss | $39,900 | 32-inch all-terrain tires, two-inch factory lift, four selectable drive modes, two-speed automatic transfer case, and transfer-case shield. |
| Z71 | $43,900 | 32-inch all-terrain tires, Jet Black interior with Adrenaline Red accents, four drive modes, and LED lamps. |
| ZR2 | $49,600 | 33-inch mud-terrain tires, three-inch lift, high-performance suspension, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and five drive modes. |
The WT and Custom are the lower-priced entry points. The LT adds convenience and tailgate storage, while the Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2 progressively emphasize off-road equipment and distinct trim features. All six use the same published engine output; paying more does not buy a more powerful engine.
What changes between Colorado trims?
WT and Custom: lower-cost starting points
The WT pairs 17-inch wheels and all-season tires with Chevrolet’s standard display and safety features. Custom moves to 18-inch black aluminum wheels and black badges, while retaining the standard engine and displays. These trims are the straightforward options for shoppers prioritizing the listed entry price over factory off-road hardware.
LT: convenience and tailgate utility
The LT adds an EZ Lift and Lower tailgate with StowFlex storage, plus remote start with Keyless Open & Start. Chevrolet also lists an available StowFlex tailgate for the lineup; confirm which features are included on the specific truck rather than assuming every configuration has the same equipment.

- 1/24 scale measuring 8.5 x 3 x 3 inches
- Made of Diecast Metal with plastic parts and rubber tires
- Openable front doors and lift gate
- Pre-built model, not a Remote Car, not a building kit
Trail Boss: lifted, trail-oriented equipment
The Trail Boss has 32-inch all-terrain tires, a two-inch factory lift, four selectable drive modes, a two-speed automatic transfer case, and a transfer-case shield. It is a more trail-focused choice than the lower trims, but the off-road hardware does not increase the published maximum tow rating above qualifying non-ZR2 configurations.
Z71: off-road tires with a different cabin presentation
The Z71 also uses 32-inch all-terrain tires and has four drive modes, with LED lamps and a Jet Black interior accented in Adrenaline Red. Its equipment and styling differ from Trail Boss, so compare the trucks’ actual build sheets and prices instead of treating the trims as interchangeable.
ZR2: the most specialized off-road trim
The ZR2 adds 33-inch mud-terrain tires, a three-inch factory lift, high-performance suspension, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and five drive modes. Baja mode is exclusive to ZR2. This hardware changes the truck’s mission: its published maximum tow rating is 6,000 lb, below the 7,700-lb maximum for qualifying non-ZR2 trucks.

Engine, performance, and drive modes
Chevrolet lists 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque from the 2.7L TurboMax on all six trims, with an eight-speed transmission. Cars.com describes rear-wheel drive as standard and four-wheel drive as available. There is no trim-level engine upgrade in the published lineup, so the meaningful performance distinctions are configuration, tires, suspension, drive modes, and equipment.
Chevrolet describes up to five selectable drive modes, with the available set varying by trim. Its descriptions say Off-Road mode adds traction on loose surfaces, Terrain mode is intended for steep hills or obstacles and can apply the brakes for climbing control, and Tow/Haul is available if equipped. These are manufacturer feature descriptions, not independent performance test results.
Chevrolet’s 2025 Colorado page attributes the statement “The Colorado ZR2 is the best midsize off-road pickup truck you can spend money on” to MotorTrend. It does not identify an individual speaker; treat that as MotorTrend’s publication-level assessment rather than a measured result.

How much can a 2025 Colorado tow?
Chevrolet’s official trailering chart lists a maximum trailer weight of 7,700 lb for non-ZR2 TurboMax configurations in both 2WD and 4WD, but the required equipment differs. The ZR2 4WD is listed at 6,000 lb.
| Configuration in Chevrolet’s chart | Maximum trailer weight | Requirements or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7L TurboMax, 2WD | 7,700 lb | Available Trailering Package required. |
| 2.7L TurboMax, 4WD | 7,700 lb | Available Trailering Package and limited-slip differential required. |
| 2.7L TurboMax ZR2, 4WD | 6,000 lb | ZR2 configuration shown in the chart. |
The chart gives a gross combination weight rating of 13,250 lb for the standard TurboMax configuration and 11,600 lb for ZR2. Chevrolet warns that passengers, cargo, options, and accessories may reduce how much the truck can tow. The maximum is not a promise that every Colorado can pull that weight in every condition: match the exact truck’s equipment to the chart, read its owner’s manual, and check its certification information before towing.

Payload is just as configuration-specific. Cars.com lists values including 1,846 lb for LT 2WD, 2,046 lb for LT 4WD, 1,726 lb for Trail Boss, 1,733 lb for Z71, and 1,445 lb for ZR2. Those are trim/configuration entries, not a model-wide payload guarantee. An AP-published Edmunds comparison gives a different general figure of up to 1,684 lb, which reinforces the practical rule: use the payload information on the exact truck’s door-jamb label when calculating occupants, cargo, and trailer tongue weight.

Displays and driver assistance
Chevrolet lists an 11.3-inch center touchscreen with Google built-in, Apple CarPlay compatibility, and Android Auto compatibility, plus an 11-inch digital driver information center on the trims shown. Chevy Safety Assist is listed as standard and includes Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic high beams. Chevrolet cautions that driver-assistance features do not replace attentive driving and may be affected by visibility, weather, and road conditions.
Bed and dimensions
Chevrolet describes up to 17 available tie-downs, an available 120-volt outlet and bed lighting, and a mid-position tailgate rated to support 500 lb. The listed exterior dimensions are 214 inches long, 84.4 inches wide including mirrors, and 78.8–82.7 inches high depending on configuration. Check the exact truck’s configuration when assessing garage clearance or fit in a work space.
A bed cover is an available Chevrolet accessory for protecting cargo. If you are shopping for a 2025 Chevrolet Colorado tonneau cover or Colorado truck bed cover, verify model year, bed, and configuration compatibility before ordering; no particular third-party cover or fitment is established here.

What reviewers say—and what the comparison does not settle
Cars.com characterizes the Colorado’s strengths as off-road capability, strong acceleration, large digital displays, and high towing capacity. Its listed drawbacks include hard interior plastics, limited rear-seat legroom, occasional rough idle, and headlight controls placed within touchscreen menus. These are Cars.com’s editorial observations, not universal owner experiences or findings from a road test conducted for this article.
An AP-published Edmunds comparison with the Ford Ranger notes the Colorado’s 7,700-lb maximum tow rating versus 7,500 lb for the Ranger, while its cited payload figures favor the Ranger. It also highlights the Colorado Trail Boss and ZR2 off-road hardware and the Colorado’s larger standard touchscreen relative to the comparison’s base Ranger display. The comparison says the Ranger can offer more standard equipment and that configuration can change the initial-price comparison. Those observations do not establish a universal winner: compare like-equipped trucks, payload labels, towing packages, actual prices, cabin priorities, and intended off-road use.
Quick Recap
Which 2025 Colorado makes sense for your needs?
- Choose WT or Custom if keeping the listed starting price down is the priority and you do not need the higher trims’ factory off-road hardware.
- Consider LT if the tailgate storage and convenience features matter more than an off-road-focused setup.
- Compare Trail Boss and Z71 if you want 32-inch all-terrain tires and a factory lift or trail-oriented equipment; their cabin, lighting, transfer-case, and styling details differ.
- Choose ZR2 for its specialized off-road hardware if that equipment is worth its higher starting price and lower published maximum tow rating for your use.
- For regular towing or payload-heavy work, start with the exact truck’s ratings, not the trim name or headline maximum. Confirm required equipment, the certification information, and the payload label.
