BYD offers two grades: the rear-wheel-drive Premium and all-wheel-drive Performance. Their published WLTP ranges are 482 km and 456 km, respectively; RACV’s February 2025 launch prices were $54,990 and $63,990, both plus on-road costs. Those prices are historical, not current quotes.
What the Sealion 7 launch meant for Australian buyers
The “locked in for Australia” headline referred to the model’s launch plans. BYD now lists the Sealion 7 on its Australian site, with Premium and Performance grades. BYD describes the vehicle as an all-electric mid-size SUV. Its current model page lists the same WLTP range figures found in the company’s 2025 specification brochure: BYD Australia’s Sealion 7 page.
For launch-era context, RACV reported prices on February 12, 2025. Those figures are useful for understanding how BYD positioned the car at launch, but they should not be treated as today’s drive-away prices or compared with a current Model Y price without up-to-date quotes.

Specification figures are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. BYD’s 2025 brochure distinguishes between NEDC and WLTP range; the two test-cycle figures are not interchangeable. The brochure cautions: “The declared range is estimated for reference only.” BYD says actual WLTP range can vary with driving style, load and traffic. Specifications and standard features may also be varied, so buyers should confirm the precise Australian vehicle and equipment in the quote. Charging and vehicle-to-load
BYD states that the Sealion 7 supports DC fast charging at up to 150 kW and vehicle-to-load (V2L). These are manufacturer-stated capabilities; the cited material does not establish real-world charging times or independent performance results. A maximum charging rate is not a promise that the vehicle will sustain that rate throughout a charging session.
How it compared with the Tesla Model Y at launch
In a comparison published February 12, 2025, RACV listed a $63,400 starting price for the Tesla Model Y and described the two SUVs as close in exterior dimensions. RACV said the Sealion 7 was slightly longer and had a longer wheelbase, while the Model Y likely had the luggage-capacity advantage. It pointed to the Model Y’s 117-litre front trunk (frunk). The Sealion 7’s strongest on-paper distinction between its own grades is straightforward: Performance adds power, all-wheel drive and quicker acceleration, while Premium has the longer published WLTP range and lower historical launch price. Choosing between the Sealion 7 and a Model Y requires current Australian quotes and directly comparable information on the specific variants, usable luggage space and charging access; the cited launch comparison alone does not settle which is the better buy.

What to check before buying
- Get a current written quote for the exact grade, including on-road costs and any offer conditions; RACV’s launch prices date from February 2025.
- Confirm the grade’s drivetrain, standard equipment and wheel-and-tyre specification on the actual Australian vehicle being quoted, because BYD says specifications and standard features may vary.
- Compare WLTP range with WLTP range, rather than substituting the brochure’s NEDC figures, and allow for real-world variation from driving conditions and vehicle load.
- For a Model Y comparison, obtain same-date prices for the variants under consideration and assess the cargo space and charging access you will actually use.
