All dimensions and comparisons in the table are from BMW’s June 2024 U.S. announcement. The altered proportions support describing the design as a substantial visual reset, but “renaissance” is an editorial judgment rather than a measured outcome.
How has the cabin and technology changed?
The cabin’s main visual feature is the BMW Curved Display, paired with an Interaction Bar across the dashboard. BMW also specifies a flat-bottom steering wheel and a toggle-style gear selector in place of a conventional lever. The controls and display give the interior a more screen-centered layout than the previous generation.

The infotainment system runs BMW Operating System 9 and includes iDrive QuickSelect, intended to make frequently used functions easier to reach. In an Edmunds comparison hosted by AP, reviewers found the infotainment menu busy at first but said they became accustomed to it. That is a reported reviewer impression, not an independent test conducted for this article.

The key highlights are the fourth-generation body, its larger surface areas and cleaner line treatment, and its changed proportions: BMW says the U.S.-spec X3 is 1.3 inches longer, 1.1 inches wider and one inch lower than its predecessor. How much space and capability does it offer?
BMW lists 31.5 cubic feet of luggage capacity behind the rear seats and 67.1 cubic feet with those seats folded. The optional trailer hitch is rated to tow up to 4,850 pounds, depending on variant. These are manufacturer figures from the June 2024 U.S. launch announcement; towing capacity is not uniform across the range.

In the AP-hosted Edmunds comparison, reviewers described passenger and cargo room as ample and praised the adjustability of the front seats. The same comparison reported that the X3 has more rear cargo space than the Mercedes-Benz GLC, while the GLC offers somewhat more passenger room. These are comparison-specific observations, not a complete specification match between every trim.
