For a used American SUV that balances reliability evidence with a modest purchase price, start with the 2021 Ford Escape or 2021 Chevrolet Equinox: iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis puts both under $20,000 on average and reports reliability scores for each. The other eight models below are useful American-brand candidates, but the available ranking does not establish that they are all cheap or equally reliable. The right choice depends on model year, condition, local price and the size of SUV you need.

How to read this shortlist

“Reliable” can mean different things across rankings. iSeeCars’ American SUV list assigns composite quality scores; those scores combine reliability, longevity, safety and value retention, so they are not reliability-only ratings or guarantees for a particular used vehicle. Its separate 2026 under-$20,000 study analyzes 12 million vehicles and provides a model-year price and reliability figure for the Escape and Equinox.

Edmunds’ March 2026 used-SUV guide describes its predictions as informed by J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study data on problems original owners experienced with three-year-old vehicles. Edmunds also cautions that owner care affects a vehicle’s later reliability. Neither kind of rating replaces an inspection of the specific SUV you are considering.

The two with direct under-$20,000 evidence

2021 Ford Escape

iSeeCars’ 2026 analysis names the 2021 Escape its highest-rated small or compact SUV in the under-$20,000 study, with an average used price of $17,237 and a reliability score of 7.6/10. Separately, the Escape ranks first among American small SUVs in iSeeCars’ 2026 category ranking, with a 7.7/10 quality score. The two scores measure different things and should not be conflated.

It is the most directly supported place to begin if you want a compact SUV and are shopping around the $20,000 mark. Treat $17,237 as the study’s average, not a quote for a particular listing or a promise that a well-maintained example is available at that price near you.

2021 Chevrolet Equinox

iSeeCars reports a $17,519 average used price and a 7.2/10 reliability score for the 2021 Equinox in its 2026 under-$20,000 analysis. The 2026 American small-SUV ranking gives the Equinox a separate 7.6/10 quality score, placing it second in that category.

For a wider year range, 2025 Edmunds guidance hosted by the Associated Press put 2018–2022 Equinox examples at approximately $14,000–$20,000. That was an article-era nationwide dealership estimate, not a current market quote. Check today’s local listings and compare similar years, mileage and equipment before deciding whether an asking price is fair.

Eight more American-brand SUVs to compare

These models appear among category leaders in iSeeCars’ 2026 American SUV ranking. The scores below are composite quality ratings, not reliability-only results. The ranking does not establish a matching used price and model-year reliability figure for each model, so treat them as candidates for further comparison rather than proven budget picks.

Model iSeeCars 2026 category placement Quality score What the evidence does and does not establish
GMC Terrain Third among American small SUVs 7.5/10 The category ranking supplies no comparable used price and model-year reliability pair.
Jeep Cherokee Fourth among American small SUVs 7.2/10 The ranking does not provide year-by-year results; do not assume every year or powertrain shares this score.
Ford Explorer First among American midsize SUVs; also leads the American three-row category 8.1/10 Price and reliability for a specific used year need separate investigation.
Jeep Wrangler Second among American midsize SUVs 8.0/10 The quality score does not establish low ownership costs. Its off-road focus may not suit a buyer prioritizing economy.
GMC Acadia Fourth among American midsize SUVs; second among American three-row SUVs 7.9/10 The ranking does not establish cheap prices for specific used years.
Jeep Grand Cherokee Fifth among American midsize SUVs 7.8/10 Verify the particular year, configuration, history and price rather than generalizing from its category score.
Chevrolet Traverse Third among American three-row SUVs 7.6/10 The available sources do not provide comparable under-$20,000 price-and-reliability data.
GMC Yukon First among American large SUVs 7.4/10 The ranking does not establish cheap ownership; weigh purchase price and expected fuel and maintenance costs against your budget.

How to choose among them

  1. Set the size and seating requirement. Decide whether you need a small SUV, a midsize or three-row vehicle, or a large SUV. A larger vehicle may not be economical for your use even if it appears well in a quality ranking.
  2. Compare like with like. For the same model year, look at local listings with similar mileage, drivetrain and trim. The figures above do not substitute for a current, regional comparison.
  3. Check the exact vehicle’s history. Edmunds’ used-vehicle guidance advises watching for reported accidents and other problems and avoiding vehicles that show neglect or abuse. Ask for maintenance records and make sure the condition matches the seller’s account.
  4. Check safety and recall information for the specific year and vehicle. The category ranking is not a substitute for year-specific safety results, and the available figures do not compare safety across all ten models. Use the vehicle’s VIN to check applicable recall information before purchase.
  5. Have the vehicle inspected. A ranking cannot reveal hidden damage, skipped maintenance or wear on an individual SUV. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection and use its findings when deciding whether to proceed or negotiate.

What the rankings cannot tell you

  • They do not show that all ten models are both reliable and cheap, or that every model year has the same performance.
  • Only the 2021 Escape and 2021 Equinox have a directly supplied under-$20,000 average-price and reliability-score pair here.
  • They do not provide a complete year-by-year comparison of mileage, trims, drivetrains, local prices or safety results for all ten candidates.
  • A score describes a group or prediction; maintenance, use and condition can change the outlook for an individual vehicle.
