The 2025 BMW i5 is a strong luxury electric sedan if you want a quiet, comfortable cabin, modern technology and a familiar BMW four-door layout. But the available reviews do not establish it as the best midsize electric sedan overall: the eDrive40 is composed and capable, yet less sporty than some BMW buyers may expect. Whether it is the right pick depends on trim, range, charging access, price and how much you value comfort over sharper performance.
What changes between the 2025 i5 trims?
BMW’s U.S. technical data lists three powertrains. The eDrive40 is rear-wheel drive, the xDrive40 adds all-wheel drive, and the M60 is the high-performance option. BMW’s listed horsepower and 0–60 mph figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

How far can a 2025 BMW i5 go on a charge?
Range depends on trim, wheel size and when the car was produced. BMW announced that technical updates on eDrive40 and xDrive40 models produced from March 2025 improved energy consumption and range. The figures below are BMW’s announced ranges for those configurations, not a single value that applies to every 2025 i5.

BMW attributes the March 2025 efficiency improvements mainly to silicon carbide power electronics and optimized wheel bearings. Its April 8, 2025 update announcement gives the wheel-specific values above. For a used or already-built car, check its production date and wheels rather than assuming it received the update.
Independent results provide another reference point, but they are not guarantees. Edmunds reports that its eDrive40 test vehicle traveled 321 miles in the publication’s range test; the same page lists 295 miles as the EPA-estimated range for the eDrive40. What is the i5 like to drive and live with?
Published reviews describe the i5 as comfort-first, with some BMW athleticism. Car and Driver characterizes it as comfortable and cosseting while noting a taste of the brand’s sporting character. MotorTrend calls the eDrive40 a solid all-rounder with good standard equipment, but says it falls short of being an excellent driver’s car. These are the publications’ assessments, not firsthand impressions from this article.
That balance matters when choosing a trim. The eDrive40 is the rear-drive option; the xDrive40 adds all-wheel drive, while the 593-hp M60 is the performance-focused version. Buyers seeking a relaxed daily sedan may prefer the comfort-oriented character described in reviews. Drivers prioritizing a more engaging feel should test-drive the exact trim and compare it with alternatives rather than assuming the BMW badge guarantees a distinctly sporty experience.

MotorTrend’s tested eDrive40 included large displays, ambient lighting, wireless charging and heated seats as standard on its test car. The publication listed that car at $77,625 against a $68,275 base price at the time of its test. Those are historical, test-specific prices, not current offers or quotes; options and market pricing can change the amount substantially. How does the BMW i5 compare with its rivals?
Car and Driver names the Mercedes-Benz EQE, Genesis Electrified G80 and Porsche Taycan among the i5’s competitive set. That is a useful shortlist, not proof that every version is a direct match on price or performance. No complete, like-for-like 2025 specification comparison is established here, so compare the specific cars you can actually buy rather than relying on model names alone.

BMW describes home charging through a 240-volt outlet with its Flexible Fast Charger or an available BMW Wallbox, as well as public DC fast charging. Edmunds lists the i5’s plug type as SAE Combo. Charging time depends on the electrical supply and equipment; a general charging estimate should not be treated as a measured result for every home or station. If you plan to install a Level 2 home charger, first confirm that your electrical service and installation site can support it. Check the charger listing and vehicle documentation for connector compatibility, amperage and installation requirements. BMW’s current overview includes Tesla Supercharger guidance with model-year, adapter and other distinctions; do not assume every 2025 i5 can use every NACS site with identical equipment. Verify compatibility for the particular vehicle, software and approved adapter guidance.
Is the 2025 BMW i5 worth buying?
The i5 deserves a place on a luxury electric-sedan shortlist if comfort, technology and a conventional BMW sedan format are high priorities. Its range figures vary by production timing, trim and wheel size, and its reviewed driving character is more composed than outright sporty. The right verdict is conditional, not a segment-wide win: choose after matching the exact configuration to your range needs, charging access, budget and preferred ride and handling.
