With 593 hp, all-wheel drive, a claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.7 seconds, and the comfort of a 5 Series, it can make ordinary journeys feel special. The trade-off is an EPA-rated 240-mile range for the tested configuration, plus a price that rose to approximately $95,395 with options in the review car.
That makes the i5 M60 an excellent choice for buyers who specifically want rapid, engaging performance in a quiet traditional sedan. For many others, the less powerful i5 eDrive40 or xDrive40 may be the smarter buy because they cost less and can deliver substantially more range.

The i5 M60’s strongest argument is not simply that it is fast. Plenty of EVs are fast. Its advantage is that it remains enjoyable when you are not launching from a stop: in town, on highways, and on winding roads. In a road test covering more than 1,000 miles, Ars Technica found the car so comfortable and engaging that it encouraged extended driving.

What is the BMW i5 M60?
The i5 M60 is the high-performance version of BMW’s electric 5 Series sedan. It uses two electrically excited synchronous motors—one at each axle—to provide all-wheel drive. It is built as part of the conventional 5 Series family rather than on an EV-only platform, so its mission is familiar: provide the space, seating position, refinement, and driving feel expected from a premium executive sedan while replacing the combustion engine with electric motors.
Its 593 hp output is equivalent to 442 kW, while torque is rated at 586 lb-ft (795 Nm). BMW quotes a 3.7-second 0–60 mph time. Those numbers make the M60 dramatically quicker than an ordinary luxury sedan, but the M60 badge needs explanation.
This is not an electric M5. The M60 sits above the regular i5 models in performance and price, but it is not a full M car. The contemporary M5 is a separate, plug-in-hybrid performance model with a more traditional performance-car brief; the road-test coverage noted that it also exceeds the i5 M60 in performance and MSRP. Current model-year specifications and pricing should be checked separately.

Performance: fast is easy; fun is harder
The M60’s acceleration is immediate and forceful. Electric torque makes overtaking effortless, and the car can deliver supercar-like thrust without engine noise, gear changes, or drama. That quietness can make the speed feel deceptively easy to access.
The more important question is whether the car is engaging after the novelty wears off. The review’s answer was yes. The i5 M60 can be entertaining at normal road speeds because its responses, body control, and power delivery make modest stretches of road feel more involving. It is not merely a machine for brief full-throttle runs.
There is still a physical limit to what a large, heavy electric sedan can feel like. The M60 is composed and capable, but it does not have the lightness or mechanical intimacy of a smaller sports sedan or a true M car. Buyers looking for delicate steering feedback, a high-revving engine, or the most communicative chassis may find the M60 less persuasive than its acceleration figures suggest.
Drive modes and the boost paddle
Sport mode sharpens the car’s responses and adds a synthesized Hans Zimmer powertrain sound. It is the setting for demanding roads, enthusiastic driving, or a more aggressive response to the accelerator.
Efficient mode generally relies primarily on the rear motor and creates a quieter, more relaxed experience. It is the sensible default for commuting and longer journeys when range matters.

The steering-wheel boost paddle temporarily switches the car into Sport mode and adds torque for approximately 10 seconds before returning to the previous setting. It is entertaining and easy to understand, although it is more of a performance flourish than an essential control.
Expressive, Relax, and Digital Art modes alter interior lighting, display graphics, and sound presentation. These features contribute to the car’s atmosphere, but they do not change the fundamental reasons to buy an M60. Treat them as personalization rather than core driving technology.
Ride, handling, and long-distance comfort
The i5 M60’s best everyday quality is its breadth of ability. The road-test account describes it as enjoyable at low speeds, stable on highways, and entertaining on back roads. That combination matters because a performance sedan that is tiresome in traffic or unsettled on the freeway quickly loses its appeal.
The cabin is quiet at highway speeds, and the car’s power makes steep grades and quick overtakes easy. Its ride is composed even with large wheels, although wheel and tire configuration can affect both comfort and efficiency. The M60 feels more like a fast, refined executive sedan than a stripped-down sports car.
That distinction is important when comparing it with BMW’s traditional “ultimate driving machine” reputation. The M60 delivers confidence and speed, but its mass remains noticeable. It is a very capable driver’s car; it is not the same experience as a lightweight gasoline BMW or full M model.
Range and efficiency are the central compromises
The tested i5 M60 configuration carries an EPA-rated range of 240 miles. That is usable for daily driving, particularly with home charging, but it is not generous for a nearly $100,000 luxury EV.

The test average was encouraging, and the reviewer reported that careful Efficient-mode driving could exceed the EPA figure. That should be treated as an observation rather than a promise. Highway speed, cold temperatures, cabin heating, rain, hills, payload, tire choice, wheel size, and repeated acceleration can all reduce consumption.

The car is most entertaining when it is using energy least efficiently. A driver averaging 2.4 miles/kWh will need to charge substantially sooner than someone driving gently at 3.2 miles/kWh.

For road trips, do not plan around using every mile of the 240-mile rating. Build in a reserve for weather, detours, charger outages, and the practical inconvenience of arriving with very little charge. The M60’s comfort makes long drives appealing; its range means charging availability still determines whether those drives are convenient.
DC-fast charging: look beyond the 209-kW peak
The review recorded one DC-fast-charging session that began at 19 percent state of charge and ended at 91 percent. It took slightly more than 37 minutes and added 62 kWh. The car reached a measured peak of 209 kW, but charging power later declined to approximately 150 kW.
This is why peak charging power alone is a poor way to compare EVs. A vehicle may briefly reach 209 kW but spend much of the session at lower power as the battery fills. The complete session, temperature, charger capability, battery state of charge, and software calibration matter more than the headline peak.

The observed 19–91 percent session is useful real-world evidence, but it is not an official guarantee for every station or season. BMW’s current charging claims, route-planning behavior, connector support, and network access should be confirmed for the exact vehicle and software version.

The i5 M60 uses BMW’s iDrive 8.5 system, centered on a curved display, touchscreen controls, voice commands, and a center-console rotary controller. An illuminated interaction bar spans the dashboard and changes with various functions and drive modes.
The retained physical controller is a genuine usability advantage. It lets the driver operate important infotainment functions without relying exclusively on the touchscreen, while voice control provides another route for common commands. The review assessed iDrive 8.5 positively.
There is a cost to BMW’s abundance of features. Menus, drive modes, lighting themes, sounds, and display presentations can make the cabin feel sophisticated, but they can also make simple adjustments feel unnecessarily software-heavy. Some drivers will enjoy the configurability; others will use only a small fraction of it.
Infotainment labels and connected features can change with over-the-air updates, so the experience may vary by software version and vehicle configuration. Native navigation behavior should be evaluated in the specific car rather than assumed from a general description of iDrive.

Driver assistance: useful, but not autonomous
The optional Driving Assistance Professional Package was listed at $2,000 in the review. It adds BMW’s Highway Assistant, described as a supervised hands-free system for supported highways. It uses gaze tracking to monitor driver attention while managing steering, acceleration, and braking within its operating limits.
Hands-free does not mean driver-free. The driver remains responsible, must continue monitoring the road, and must be ready to take control immediately. Coverage, package naming, price, supported roads, and functionality can vary by market, model year, software version, and configuration. Verify those details before treating the system as a reason to buy the car.
Price and value
The December 2024 review cited an M60 starting price of $84,100 and a tested price of approximately $95,395. It also cited a starting price of $67,100 for a rear-wheel-drive i5, described as capable of nearly 300 miles on a charge.
Those are historical US review-era figures, not current August 2026 pricing. Destination charges, options, incentives, lease programs, dealer pricing, and model availability must be checked through the BMW USA configurator before purchase.
The broader value argument remains straightforward. The M60 gives you substantially more output and quicker acceleration, but its dual-motor system and large-wheel configuration contribute to lower efficiency and less range than less powerful i5 versions. If you do not need sub-four-second acceleration, the eDrive40 or xDrive40 may provide a more balanced daily-driving specification.
Configuration advice
- Prioritize home charging access. The M60 is much easier to live with when ordinary charging happens overnight at home.
- Choose wheels and tires carefully. Large wheels can affect efficiency, ride quality, replacement cost, and range.
- Evaluate the assistance package by route. Highway Assistant is potentially useful for supported commutes, but it is not valuable on roads where the system cannot operate.
- Set a firm option budget. A heavily equipped M60 can move from an expensive performance sedan to a mid-$90,000 purchase quickly.
Should you buy the i5 M60?
Buy or lease the i5 M60 if:
- You want a traditional luxury sedan rather than an SUV or minimalist EV.
- Acceleration and responsive power delivery matter more than maximum range.
- You value a quiet, comfortable highway car that can also be entertaining on winding roads.
- You have reliable home charging.
- You accept paying a premium for performance that lower-output i5 models do not provide.
Choose an i5 eDrive40 or xDrive40 if:
- You want the i5’s cabin, driving position, and interface without needing maximum performance.
- Range and price matter more than a 3.7-second 0–60 mph time.
- You want a more efficient daily driver and can accept less power.
The lower-output recommendation is a value judgment based on the cited review, not a universal rule. A buyer who regularly enjoys spirited driving may reasonably consider the M60’s extra performance worth the cost.
Consider a BMW M5 or plug-in hybrid instead if:
- You want a more traditional performance-car experience.
- Engine sound and quick refueling matter more than all-electric operation.
- You frequently travel beyond reliable DC-charging coverage.
- You want the highest-performance 5 Series and accept a plug-in-hybrid powertrain.
The M5 is not a direct electric equivalent of the i5 M60. It is a different type of performance sedan, and current 2026 pricing and specifications should be verified independently.

What the road test does—and does not—establish
The available evidence supports a strong conclusion about the M60’s driving character, efficiency in one extended test, and observed charging session. It does not establish winter range, long-term battery degradation, reliability, repair costs, cargo-volume superiority, or current incentives and availability. Those factors should be checked against the exact vehicle, climate, ownership plan, and local market.
Before buying, confirm the current EPA label, wheel-and-tire configuration, battery warranty, insurance quote, charging connector and network access, and the cost of installing suitable home equipment. A home charger from BMW, ChargePoint, Emporia, or Tesla is only useful if the parking location has appropriate electrical capacity and the installation complies with local code.
