But a week with one BMW cannot prove that battery-electric vehicles are universally better than combustion cars: that depends on your driving, charging access, costs and priorities. The xDrive40’s trade-offs are tangible—cold-weather range, charging stops and substantial weight—and its single-motor sibling may suit buyers who value efficiency and range more than all-wheel drive.
What the 2025 BMW i4 xDrive40 is
The i4 xDrive40 is a two-motor, all-wheel-drive electric Gran Coupe. BMW Group’s June 2024 technical data lists 295 kW (401 hp) of system output, 600 Nm of torque and an 81.3 kWh net battery (83.9 kWh gross). The same document gives 190 kW for the front motor and 230 kW for the rear. Those are manufacturer specifications; Ars Technica’s review reports 395 hp for its test car, so the figures should not be treated as identical reporting of output across sources and markets.
The xDrive40 is distinct from the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive i4 eDrive40. Ars’ reviewer characterizes the eDrive40 as lighter, more efficient and cheaper. Choosing the xDrive40 instead buys two-motor AWD; whether that added traction is worth the trade-off depends on where and how you drive.
How it drives: composed, quiet, and heavy
Jonathan M. Gitlin’s week-long review describes the i4 as quiet and smooth over bumps, with immediate throttle response. Those qualities make ordinary driving feel refined, while the two-motor setup provides the all-wheel-drive configuration some buyers may prefer in winter-prone or hilly areas.

- Hidden design: perfectly fits the body of the car, and the flip design ensures the confidentiality of your item storage, which to some extent protects your privacy.
- Installation: - Non destructive installation, no tools required,, only put the storage box into the original car slot, making full use of the space in the car, not easy to slide and easy to clean, It does not affect the closing of the armrest cover.
- Materials: This center console storage box made of high-quality ABS plastic material, stable, wear-resistant, longer use time and more efficient.
The reviewer also notes a curb weight of roughly 5,000 lb and doors that were easy to slam. Its mass is part of the ownership trade-off rather than a detail to overlook: the car can feel comfortable and composed, but this is not a light sports sedan. The review reports 5.1 seconds to 62 mph for its test car.
Gitlin concluded, “The i4 was an enjoyable car to spend a week with.” That is a road-test judgment about one car, not a claim that every driver will prefer an EV or that this model is better in every measure than a combustion-powered 4 Series.

What range can you expect?
Range depends on wheel configuration and on which source you use. Ars reports EPA figures of 287 miles with 18-inch wheels and 269 miles with 19-inch wheels; the reviewed car had 19-inch wheels. ENERGY STAR’s listing for the 2025 xDrive40 Gran Coupe with 19-inch wheels gives 268 miles. BMW USA’s current technical page lists 287 miles for the xDrive40 and says range varies with wheel and tire selection, driving style, accessories, traffic, outside temperature and charging frequency.
| Source and configuration | Reported range | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Ars Technica, 18-inch wheels | 287 miles | EPA figure reported in the review |
| Ars Technica, 19-inch wheels | 269 miles | EPA figure reported for the review car’s wheel size |
| ENERGY STAR, 2025 xDrive40 Gran Coupe, 19-inch wheels | 268 miles | Vehicle-listing range |
| BMW USA, xDrive40 listing | 287 miles | Current manufacturer estimate; BMW warns actual range varies |
The one-mile difference between Ars’ reported 19-inch EPA figure and ENERGY STAR’s listing is small, but it is worth preserving the source and configuration rather than treating every published range as interchangeable. BMW also cautions that figures for recently released model years may be preliminary.

For its test week, with temperatures around or below freezing, Ars’ reviewer averaged 3.1 miles per kWh (20 kWh/100 km). That is one cold-weather road-test result, not a controlled all-season efficiency figure or a promise of what another driver will achieve. Cold weather, route, speed and other conditions can affect real-world range.
How long does the i4 xDrive40 take to charge?
BMW USA lists a maximum AC charging rate of 11.5 kW and a maximum DC rate of 205 kW for the xDrive40. BMW gives 30 minutes for a 10–80% DC charge. These are rated figures, not a guarantee for every charger or session: charging depends on factors including the station, battery temperature and state of charge.

The Ars test illustrates why a real stop may not match a headline charging time. After preconditioning, the car went from 28% to 90% in 40 minutes at a 150 kW Electrify America charger. The session delivered 54.5 kWh and reached a reported peak of 139 kW. That result cannot be compared directly with BMW’s 30-minute claim because the tested session began and ended at different charge levels and took place under different conditions.
At home, an AC charger can make routine charging more convenient, provided your electrical installation and charging equipment are compatible. The 11.5 kW vehicle rating is a maximum capability; it does not mean every home circuit or charger will deliver that rate.

Does AWD make the xDrive40 the better i4?
Not for every buyer. The xDrive40’s defining advantage over the single-motor eDrive40 is its two-motor all-wheel-drive setup. That can matter if you regularly drive in winter conditions or on hilly roads. In exchange, the reviewer describes the single-motor eDrive40 as lighter, more efficient and cheaper. If AWD is not important to you, compare the eDrive40 before deciding that the xDrive40 is the right i4.
For a combustion-car comparison, consider the choice in practical terms rather than assuming one powertrain wins every category:
- Driving feel: The review found the i4 quiet and smooth, with immediate throttle response.
- Traction needs: The xDrive40 provides AWD; the eDrive40 is the single-motor alternative.
- Trip routine: Consider the range you need and whether charging access fits your regular routes.
- Purchase and ownership economics: The available figures do not establish a like-for-like total-cost comparison with a combustion car.
- Environmental impact: This road test does not establish a lifecycle-emissions comparison between BEVs and combustion vehicles.
Ars reports a $62,300 MSRP for its test car, but that is the price stated in the March 2025 review, not a current quote or a like-for-like comparison with another vehicle. Equipment, market and date matter when comparing purchase prices.
Who should consider the 2025 i4 xDrive40?
The xDrive40 makes the most sense for a driver who wants an electric Gran Coupe with AWD and values quietness, comfort and brisk response enough to accept the car’s weight and charging requirements. It is less compelling if you do not need AWD, prioritize maximum efficiency, or cannot make charging work conveniently. The review offers a favorable account of this BMW’s driving experience, but it does not settle broader claims about cost or emissions.
