Short answer: The 2024 Toyota Tundra uses Toyota’s V35A-FTS-family 3,445-cc twin-turbo V6, marketed in the United States as 3.4L. Toyota rates it at 358 hp in the SR, 389 hp in higher nonhybrid grades, or a combined 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. in the i-FORCE MAX hybrid.

The engine uses an aluminum block and heads, 24-valve DOHC, Dual VVT-i, D-4ST direct-and-port injection, electric wastegate actuators, and a water-cooled intercooler. The most important ownership caveat is recall 26V320: certain 2024 nonhybrid Tundras may have engine-manufacturing debris associated with main-bearing damage. Recall applicability must be confirmed by VIN.

The 2024 Tundra’s engine at a glance

The U.S.-market 2024 Toyota Tundra uses Toyota’s V35A-FTS-family 3,445-cc twin-turbocharged V6, marketed as a 3.4L engine. It is available as a conventional gasoline engine in two output levels or as the gasoline-electric i-FORCE MAX hybrid. Depending on configuration, Toyota rates it at 358 hp, 389 hp, or a combined 437 hp. Peak torque ranges from 406 lb.-ft. to 583 lb.-ft.

The engine is paired with a 10-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission in both gasoline and hybrid configurations. Its principal hardware includes an aluminum block, aluminum DOHC cylinder heads, 24 valves, Dual VVT-i, D-4ST direct-and-port fuel injection, twin turbochargers with electric wastegate actuators, and a water-cooled intercooler.

3.4L versus 3.5L: are these different Tundra engines?

No. Toyota’s 2024 U.S. brochure calls the engine a 3.4L V6 and gives its exact displacement as 3,445 cc. Earlier launch-era Toyota material used 3.5-liter wording for this engine family. In this context, 3.4L and 3.5L are nomenclature and rounding differences, not evidence of two separate 2024 Tundra V6 options.

The most precise description is therefore: Toyota’s V35A-FTS 3,445-cc twin-turbo V6, marketed as 3.4L for 2024. The V35A-FTS family name also appears in Toyota technical material and the recall documentation.

2024 Tundra horsepower and torque ratings

Toyota published three relevant output configurations for the 2024 Tundra. The 358-hp rating is specific to the SR application; it is not the output of every nonhybrid Tundra. Higher nonhybrid grades receive the 389-hp calibration, while i-FORCE MAX ratings represent combined gasoline-engine and electric-motor output.

Toyota-published 2024 Tundra engine ratings
Configuration Horsepower Peak torque What the rating means
i-FORCE 3.4L twin-turbo V6, SR 358 hp at 5,200 rpm 406 lb.-ft. at 2,000 rpm Gasoline-engine rating for the SR application
i-FORCE 3.4L twin-turbo V6, higher grades 389 hp at 5,200 rpm 479 lb.-ft. at 2,400 rpm Gasoline-engine rating for higher nonhybrid grades
i-FORCE MAX 3.4L twin-turbo V6 hybrid 437 hp at 5,200 rpm 583 lb.-ft. at 2,400 rpm Combined hybrid-system rating

These are Toyota’s configuration ratings, not independent dynamometer results. The i-FORCE MAX figures should not be described as output from the gasoline engine alone. Toyota publishes them as combined system horsepower and torque.

How the twin-turbo V6 is equipped

3,445-cc V6 construction

The engine uses an aluminum block and aluminum cylinder heads. Its DOHC valvetrain has 24 valves, and Dual VVT-i varies valve timing to support the engine’s operating requirements. The result is a relatively compact forced-induction engine rather than a naturally aspirated V8-style powertrain.

Twin turbochargers and water-cooled intercooling

Two turbochargers compress the intake air before it enters the engine. Toyota lists electric wastegate actuators, which control turbocharger pressure electronically rather than relying solely on a conventional pneumatic actuator. The engine also uses a water-cooled intercooler to manage the temperature of compressed intake air.

The intercooler is part of the factory engine system; it is not an aftermarket add-on associated only with the hybrid model. Both the nonhybrid i-FORCE and i-FORCE MAX use the twin-turbo V6 architecture and intercooling hardware described in Toyota’s specifications.

D-4ST fuel injection

Toyota’s D-4ST fuel system combines direct injection and port injection. Direct injection delivers fuel into the combustion chamber, while port injection delivers fuel into the intake-port area. The important ownership takeaway is that the V6 uses a combined injection strategy—not direct injection alone—so generic advice written for a different Toyota engine should not automatically be applied to this Tundra.

What changes with i-FORCE MAX?

i-FORCE MAX is not simply a small electric accessory added somewhere in the truck’s electrical system. It is a hybrid powertrain built around the same twin-turbo V6 architecture, with a motor-generator and clutch installed inside the bell housing between the engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission.

The motor-generator contributes power through the transmission. Toyota describes the hybrid system as handling engine starting, electric driving, electric assist, and energy regeneration. Because the motor-generator is integrated into the powertrain, the system can add electric torque without requiring a separate conventional transmission for the truck.

The hybrid battery is a sealed 288-volt nickel-metal-hydride unit mounted under the rear passenger seats. Toyota’s published i-FORCE MAX rating is 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. of combined system output. Those numbers include the gasoline engine and electric motor working together; Toyota’s brochure does not establish that the gasoline engine by itself produces 437 hp or 583 lb.-ft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The hybrid layout also explains why i-FORCE MAX should be considered a different power-delivery system even though it shares the V6 family and turbocharged architecture with the nonhybrid engine. The motor-generator, clutch, high-voltage battery, electric driving functions, and regeneration system all affect how power reaches the wheels.

Transmission and drive modes

Both i-FORCE and i-FORCE MAX use a 10-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Toyota lists sequential shift mode, uphill/downhill shift logic, and TOW/HAUL driving modes.

The transmission hardware is especially relevant to the hybrid layout: the i-FORCE MAX motor-generator sits between the V6 and this automatic transmission, allowing the electric motor’s contribution to pass through the same transmission rather than through a separate electric drive unit.

Maintenance considerations for the 2024 V35A V6

Toyota’s 2024 Warranty and Maintenance Guide identifies engine oil and oil-filter replacement as scheduled maintenance and separately includes engine-air-filter inspection and replacement. For the exact oil grade, viscosity, capacity, inspection procedure, and model-specific service details, use the owner’s manual rather than a generic online service chart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Toyota’s owner portal identifies the 2024 Tundra manual as OM0C056U. That manual is the appropriate reference for fluid specifications and procedures because equipment and service requirements can vary by configuration.

When the 5,000-mile oil interval applies

For drivers operating under Toyota’s listed special conditions, the maintenance guide calls for engine oil and filter replacement every 5,000 miles or six months, regardless of the oil used or its certification. The guide’s special-condition language should be read together with the complete maintenance schedule; do not substitute a one-size-fits-all interval from an unrelated Tundra year or engine.

The practical maintenance checklist is:

  • Use the 2024 Tundra owner’s manual to confirm the required oil grade, viscosity, capacity, and service procedure.
  • Follow the maintenance guide’s oil and filter schedule that applies to the truck’s operating conditions.
  • Inspect or replace the engine air filter according to Toyota’s schedule and the vehicle’s actual condition.
  • Keep records of oil and filter service, particularly on a turbocharged engine and on any truck that may need dealer diagnosis for a recall-related concern.
  • Do not assume a generic V6 oil filter or air filter fits every 2024 Tundra configuration.

Optional intake-maintenance accessory

Toyota’s Genuine Parts catalog lists the Toyota Tundra TRD air filter PTR03-34220 as a performance air-filter option and states that Tundra and Sequoia require two filters. If you are considering it, verify the exact trim, model year, and VIN before ordering; neither the catalog reference nor the engine description alone confirms fitment for every 2024 Tundra configuration. Availability, seller identity, and authenticity should also be checked wherever you shop.

This is an air-filtration accessory, not a substitute for scheduled maintenance and not evidence of a particular horsepower increase. Toyota’s catalog identification supports researching the part, but it does not justify assuming that every aftermarket or online listing is equivalent.

Recall 26V320: what 2024 Tundra owners need to know

NHTSA’s acknowledgment dated May 22, 2026 describes the risk as manufacturing debris that may remain in the engine and cause a main bearing to fail. Toyota’s manufacturer filing identifies a potentially involved 2024 production period from February 7, 2024, through August 5, 2024, and lists 43,566 potentially involved vehicles.

That production range is useful context, but it is not a substitute for a VIN check. Toyota’s filing also says that not every vehicle produced during that period was sold in the United States. A truck built outside the listed period could still require VIN-specific confirmation, and a truck built inside the period should not automatically be declared defective without checking its recall status.

Possible symptoms

In its May 20, 2026 announcement, Toyota listed possible symptoms including:

  • Engine knocking
  • Rough running
  • A no-start condition
  • Loss of motive power

These symptoms can have more than one possible cause, so owners should not attempt to diagnose the main bearing themselves or continue making assumptions from noise alone. If a vehicle develops a serious engine symptom or loses power, prioritize getting it safely off the road and contact Toyota or an authorized dealer.

How the remedy works

The subsequent NHTSA remedy filing describes dealer software that evaluates the number-one main bearing using available vehicle-drive data. If the software cannot confirm that the bearing is free from abnormal wear related to the recall condition, the dealer will replace the engine at no charge.

  • DISPLAY READY: Perfect size for collectors at 1:32 scale, featuring authentic paint finish and precise model details
  • SPECIFICATIONS: Comes in retail packaging, weighs approximately 0.8 pounds, suitable for ages 14 years and up

That procedure means the recall remedy is not necessarily an engine replacement for every affected truck. Some vehicles may be evaluated by the dealer software, while others may qualify for engine replacement when the software cannot establish that the bearing is unaffected. Do not treat a completed campaign notice, a build date, or the absence of symptoms as a substitute for the vehicle’s VIN-specific status.

Toyota said it was preparing the remedy and contacting customers in phases as the remedy became available. Because recall status and remedy availability can change, check the VIN with Toyota or NHTSA and ask an authorized Toyota dealer for the current action required for that particular truck.

Which 2024 Tundra engine is the better choice?

The answer depends on what the buyer values, but the published specifications make the basic distinctions clear:

  • SR gasoline model: The 358-hp/406-lb.-ft. calibration is the entry-level published output and should not be confused with the 389-hp rating used by higher nonhybrid grades.
  • Higher nonhybrid grades: The 389-hp/479-lb.-ft. version provides Toyota’s higher gasoline-only output rating.
  • i-FORCE MAX: The hybrid combines the twin-turbo V6 with a transmission-mounted motor-generator and 288-volt battery for a published 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft. of combined system output.

Those figures describe capability on paper, not independent fuel-economy results, durability testing, or real-world towing performance. The supplied specifications do not establish long-term reliability or actual owner operating costs, so buyers should not infer those conclusions from the horsepower table alone.

Frequently overlooked details

  • The engine is marketed as 3.4L: Its precise displacement is 3,445 cc, while some earlier Toyota material used 3.5-liter terminology.
  • The SR is not rated at 389 hp: Toyota lists 358 hp for the SR and 389 hp for higher nonhybrid grades.
  • i-FORCE MAX output is combined: The 437-hp and 583-lb.-ft. figures include electric assistance.
  • There are two engine air filters: Toyota’s parts catalog says Tundra requires two performance air filters, so confirm quantity before ordering.
  • The recall is VIN-specific: Model year and production date alone cannot establish whether a truck has an open recall or completed remedy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2024 Tundra engine 3.4L or 3.5L?

No. Toyota’s 2024 U.S. brochure lists 3.4L and gives the exact displacement as 3,445 cc. Earlier launch material used 3.5-liter wording for the same V35A-FTS-family engine. These are different naming conventions, not two separate 2024 Tundra engines.

How much horsepower does the 2024 Tundra twin-turbo V6 make?

The SR uses Toyota’s 358-hp and 406-lb.-ft. rating. Higher nonhybrid grades use 389 hp and 479 lb.-ft. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid is rated at a combined 437 hp and 583 lb.-ft.; those hybrid figures include the electric motor.

Is every 2024 Toyota Tundra included in recall 26V320?

No. Recall 26V320 covers certain 2024 nonhybrid Tundras, not every truck with the 2024 model year. Toyota’s listed production period and the vehicle’s configuration can help provide context, but only a VIN lookup through Toyota or NHTSA can establish the status of a specific truck.

What does i-FORCE MAX add to the Tundra V6?

It uses the same twin-turbo V6 architecture, but i-FORCE MAX adds a motor-generator and clutch between the engine and 10-speed transmission, along with a sealed 288-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery under the rear passenger seats. Its 437-hp and 583-lb.-ft. figures are combined system ratings.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 2024 Tundra uses one V35A-FTS-family 3,445-cc twin-turbo V6 marketed as 3.4L, with 358-hp SR, 389-hp higher-grade gasoline, and 437-hp combined i-FORCE MAX configurations. The hybrid adds a transmission-mounted motor-generator and a 288-volt battery rather than replacing the V6. For ownership, follow the 2024 manual and maintenance guide, verify air-filter fitment carefully, and check every 2024 nonhybrid Tundra by VIN for recall 26V320.
