2024 Toyota Tundra towing capacity: how to find the right rating
Toyota’s model-year announcement gives a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds, but that is a model-line maximum—not a rating for an arbitrary 2024 Tundra. Toyota’s 2024 owner’s manual towing section lists trailer weight ratings by model code and configuration; the values in its tables range from 8,300 to 12,000 pounds.

The manual defines trailer weight rating (TWR) as the maximum gross trailer weight. Its rating calculation assumes a base vehicle with a driver and front passenger plus applicable towing equipment. Added passengers, cargo and optional equipment reduce the trailer weight the truck can tow while remaining within its limits.
Check all the truck’s weight limits
Do not treat TWR as the only number that matters. Toyota instructs owners not to exceed the truck’s TWR, unbraked TWR, gross combination weight rating (GCWR), gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross axle weight rating (GAWR). Use the model-code table together with the truck’s labels and actual loaded weights.

Follow the manual’s towing instructions
- Use a sway-control device when gross trailer weight is over 2,000 pounds.
- Use a weight-distributing hitch when gross trailer weight is over 5,000 pounds.
- The manual gives a maximum towing speed of 65 mph, subject to any lower posted limit or trailer-manual limit.
- Do not tow until the vehicle has been driven more than 500 miles after new-vehicle or new-powertrain break-in.

Check towing equipment and fitment
Toyota’s brochure lists a class-IV receiver and 4-pin/7-pin wiring on SR5 and higher grades, with an SR tow-package path. Trailer sway control is listed across grades; an integrated trailer brake controller and TOW-HAUL modes are listed on most grades. Equipment varies, so confirm what is actually installed on the truck by grade, VIN and options. Toyota also says a wireless trailer camera system is available for the 2024 Tundra to provide rearward visibility when a trailer blocks the normal view; check the vehicle’s fitment and equipment before relying on it. 2024 Tundra payload capacity: use the truck’s own label
Toyota cites a model-line maximum payload of 1,940 pounds for the 2024 Tundra. That figure is a ceiling across configurations, not the payload available on every truck. The individual vehicle’s certification and tire/loading labels and ratings determine what it can carry.
When calculating the load, account for occupants, cargo, accessories and hitch or trailer tongue load. Tongue load uses payload capacity, so a truck may reach its payload limit before reaching its advertised maximum trailer rating. Check the vehicle labels and the matching model-code information in Toyota’s towing section rather than estimating from another Tundra’s specifications.

2024 Tundra recall: check the VIN before buying or driving
Recall information dated May 20, 2026: Toyota announced a recall involving certain 2024 non-hybrid Tundras in North America and Latin America and estimated approximately 44,000 affected vehicles in the United States. Toyota said machining debris could remain in the engine, potentially damaging the number-one main bearing. Possible symptoms include engine knocking, rough running, a no-start condition or loss of motive power. Toyota warned that “A loss of motive power while driving at higher speeds can increase the risk of a crash.” Read Toyota’s May 20, 2026 recall announcement for its description of the campaign.
The recall applies to certain vehicles, not every 2024 Tundra, and the announcement concerns non-hybrid trucks. Check the specific vehicle identification number (VIN) through Toyota’s recall site or NHTSA; campaign status and remedy details can change. If the truck has the symptoms Toyota describes, contact a Toyota dealer. A seller’s statement or a model-year lookup is not a substitute for a VIN-specific status check.
Where to find the 2024 Toyota Tundra owner’s manual and warranty information
Toyota’s 2024 Tundra manuals and warranties page lists the Owner’s Manual OM0C056U, a short manual, multimedia manual, wireless-camera manuals, a driving-support excerpt, and the Warranty and Maintenance Guide. Use the model-year-specific documents for operation, towing instructions and maintenance guidance.
Toyota’s current summary lists basic warranty coverage of 36 months/36,000 miles and powertrain coverage of 60 months/60,000 miles.
