The 2024 Toyota Tacoma can tow up to 6,500 pounds in specified non-hybrid configurations; the i-FORCE MAX hybrid is rated for up to 6,000 pounds. Payload also varies by configuration, so neither maximum applies to every Tacoma. Check the truck’s exact ratings before choosing a trailer or loading passengers and cargo.
2024 Tacoma towing and payload ratings at a glance
| Rating | Toyota’s published maximum | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Towing | 6,500 lb | Specified SR5 i-FORCE and TRD PreRunner XtraCab configurations, according to Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma launch release. |
| Towing | 6,000 lb | i-FORCE MAX Tacoma, according to Toyota’s April 23, 2024 i-FORCE MAX announcement. |
| Payload | Up to 1,709 lb | TRD Off-Road configuration cited in Toyota’s 2024 launch release. |
| Payload | Up to 1,710 lb | i-FORCE MAX models, as stated in Toyota’s launch material; consult the brochure table for the particular configuration. |
These are configuration-specific headline figures, not a guarantee for every truck with the same model name. Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma eBrochure breaks out ratings by cab, bed, grade, powertrain, drivetrain, and—in applicable configurations—transmission. Use that table rather than extrapolating from a maximum.
How towing capacity and payload differ
Towing capacity is the trailer limit
Towing capacity is the published maximum trailer weight for a specified configuration. Toyota cautions: “Never tow beyond a vehicle’s published towing capacities.” A Tacoma’s hitch or towing equipment does not make the model-wide maximum applicable to that individual truck.
Payload is what the truck carries
Payload covers weight carried by the Tacoma, including occupants, cargo, and options. Toyota’s brochure says, “Payload includes the weight of occupants, cargo and options and is limited by weight distribution.” When towing, the portion of the trailer load carried by the truck also uses carrying capacity. That means a truck may be within its towing rating yet still need a payload check based on its passengers, cargo, equipment, and trailer loading.

Why ratings differ between 2024 Tacoma configurations
Toyota’s brochure shows that ratings vary among Tacoma versions; for example, i-FORCE automatic payload entries differ across SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited configurations. When comparing trucks, check all of the following rather than relying on grade name or engine alone:
- Powertrain: i-FORCE or i-FORCE MAX
- Cab and bed
- Grade
- Drivetrain and transmission
- Published towing rating, payload, and GVWR
- Installed options and accessories
The i-FORCE MAX has a lower published maximum towing figure than the 6,500-pound maximum available on specified non-hybrid configurations. Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX announcement also says Tow/Haul is standard on i-FORCE MAX Tacomas and describes available Trailer Back Up Guide with Straight Path Assist and a trailer brake controller. Toyota’s launch release describes available towing aids including a trailer brake controller and trailer backup guidance; availability depends on equipment.

How to find the rating for your Tacoma
- Identify the exact truck. Confirm its powertrain, cab, bed, grade, drivetrain, and transmission from its vehicle documents or configuration information.
- Look up the matching brochure entry. Use the corresponding row in Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma eBrochure weights-and-capacities table. Do not substitute the highest rating listed for a different configuration.
- Check the truck’s labels and owner documentation. Use the vehicle’s own certification information and owner documentation for vehicle-specific limits, particularly if it has options, accessories, or modifications. The published brochure table is not a VIN-specific lookup.
- Account for the actual load. Include occupants, cargo, and options when considering payload, and check how the trailer is loaded. A headline payload or towing maximum alone cannot establish the right trailer limit for a particular loaded truck.
Does trailer tongue weight count against payload?
Toyota’s brochure defines payload to include occupants, cargo, and options, and notes that weight distribution limits payload. It does not separately quantify tongue weight in the cited excerpt. In practice, the trailer load carried at the hitch is weight the truck must support, so assess it alongside the Tacoma’s payload and the trailer’s loading details. Consult the truck and trailer documentation for the applicable limits rather than estimating a safe trailer size from the model-wide maximum.
