ABS, AWD, BEV and the rest of the shorthand you see in car listings, dashboards and manuals describe different things: vehicle types, installed features, diagnostic systems and identifiers. Here are 10 common automotive acronyms, what each stands for and what it means for a driver.
Vehicle types and drivetrains
AWD: All-wheel drive
AWD describes a drivetrain that can deliver power to all four wheels. How and when it sends power to each wheel varies by vehicle, so the acronym alone does not tell you how a particular system behaves.
EV: Electric vehicle
EV is an umbrella term for vehicles powered by electricity. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies battery-electric vehicles and fuel-cell electric vehicles as two types of EVs, so check the context to see which kind is meant. NHTSA’s electric and hybrid vehicle guide explains the distinction.
BEV: Battery-electric vehicle
A BEV runs on electricity stored in a battery and plugs in to recharge. It is one type of EV, not a synonym for every vehicle described as electric.

HEV: Hybrid-electric vehicle
An HEV uses both gasoline and electricity. Hybrid designs and the degree to which they rely on electric drive vary; the acronym does not mean the vehicle is a plug-in model.
Safety and driver-assistance features
ABS: Anti-lock braking system
ABS helps prevent the wheels from locking during hard braking. The system’s behavior can vary, so follow the instructions in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. NHTSA’s glossary also lists the term as “Antilock Braking Systems.” NHTSA glossary

AEB: Automatic emergency braking
AEB refers to systems that can apply braking when a potential crash is imminent. NHTSA includes dynamic brake support and crash imminent braking among AEB systems. The exact names and behavior vary by manufacturer and vehicle; check your owner’s manual for the system in yours. NHTSA’s driver-assistance guide

Diagnostics and vehicle information
OBD-II: On-Board Diagnostics II
OBD-II is the vehicle diagnostics system used to retrieve diagnostic information, including codes with a compatible scan tool. A code can help identify an issue, but reading it does not by itself confirm the cause or prove a repair is needed. SAE’s diagnostic terminology standard covers materials used with diagnostic and repair tools, including scan tools. SAE J1930_202408 scope
VIN: Vehicle identification number
A VIN is the vehicle’s identifying number. NHTSA’s vPIC service offers basic VIN decoding and manufacturer-reported data for model year 1981 and newer vehicles. NHTSA vPIC
TPMS: Tire pressure monitoring system
TPMS monitors tire pressure using sensors in the wheels and can alert you when pressure is low. Warning behavior and the correct inflation pressures depend on the vehicle and tires, so consult the owner’s manual and the vehicle’s tire-pressure label rather than relying on the warning light alone.

The expansion is only the starting point. An acronym may name a kind of vehicle, a feature installed on it, a diagnostic system or a unique identifier. For driver-assistance features in particular, manufacturers may use different names for similar technologies; NHTSA advises shoppers to check the vehicle’s specific equipment rather than assume the label guarantees identical behavior.
