The 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is the smaller, more fuel-efficient choice on published ratings, with all-wheel drive standard. The larger 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid is the better fit when rear-seat cargo space and passenger room matter more. Your best match depends chiefly on how often you carry bulky gear and whether you want the option of two-wheel drive.

Which gets better fuel economy?
Toyota lists the Corolla Cross Hybrid at 45 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 42 mpg combined, with electronic on-demand AWD standard. Honda rates the CR-V Hybrid at 43/36/40 mpg in 2WD and 40/34/37 mpg in AWD. On these published figures, the Toyota has the higher combined rating; compared with the CR-V, the gap depends on whether you choose Honda’s 2WD or AWD version.
These are manufacturer-published ratings, not a matched real-world comparison of the two vehicles. Route, weather, driving style and vehicle condition affect fuel use. Toyota’s 2024 announcement also cites 196 net system horsepower and an 8.0-second 0–60-mph time; those are Toyota claims, not results from an independent side-by-side test. Which has more room for people and cargo?
The CR-V Hybrid has substantially more published cargo space behind the second row: 34.7 to 36.3 cubic feet depending on trim, versus 21.5 cubic feet in the Corolla Cross Hybrid. Honda lists 76.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Its hybrid configurations also have 103.5 cubic feet of passenger volume and 41.3 inches of front and rear legroom.
If you regularly carry a stroller, several suitcases or bulky equipment, the CR-V’s larger cargo area is a meaningful advantage. The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s 175.6-inch length is 9.2 inches shorter than the CR-V’s 184.8 inches, which may make it easier to fit in a tight parking space. Those dimensions do not by themselves determine how either vehicle feels to park, so consider your usual spaces and test the vehicles in them if possible.

The guide lists an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 and 1,500-pound towing capacity. Confirm equipment and towing requirements for the specific vehicle and configuration.
CR-V Hybrid
Honda’s listed hybrid trims are Sport, Sport-L and Sport Touring. Sport and Sport-L are available with 2WD or AWD in the specifications; Sport Touring is AWD. Sport and Sport-L have 36.3 cubic feet behind the rear seat, while Sport Touring has 34.7 cubic feet. Honda identifies Honda Sensing driver-assistance features across the CR-V lineup, but equipment varies by system and trim; check the specifications for the exact vehicle.

What do the historical prices tell you?
Toyota’s January 2024 Fleet Guide lists starting MSRPs of $27,970 for the Corolla Cross Hybrid S, $29,290 for SE and $31,065 for XSE. Toyota’s 2024 model page gives different starting MSRP figures: $28,220 for S, $29,540 for SE, $30,465 for Nightshade and $31,405 for XSE. These are historical new-vehicle prices from different Toyota publications, not current used-car values.
A comparable 2024 CR-V Hybrid MSRP is not established by the cited Honda specifications, so these figures cannot support a reliable price-winner verdict. For used examples, compare local listings by model year, trim, mileage and condition rather than treating a historical MSRP as today’s market price.

What do the safety ratings say?
IIHS ratings vary by test, so a single rating or result should not be treated as a complete safety ranking. The 2024 Honda CR-V IIHS page labels the vehicle a Top Safety Pick. It reports good ratings for the small-overlap front, original moderate-overlap front and updated side tests, but a poor rating for the updated moderate-overlap front test. IIHS says that updated test was conducted on a 2024 CR-V LX 4-door 4WD; the rating applies to 2023–27 models.
The 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross IIHS page reports a good result for pedestrian front-crash prevention and identifies standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 pre-collision pedestrian detection. That is a specific test result, not an overall comparison with the CR-V. Review the complete IIHS records and the equipment on the exact trim you are considering.

Quick Recap
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Corolla Cross Hybrid if you want a shorter crossover, standard AWD and the higher published combined fuel-economy figure. Its trade-off is less cargo space and a smaller overall package.
- Choose the CR-V Hybrid if you regularly carry people and bulky cargo, or want more room behind the rear seat. Independent coverage by Edmunds, republished by the Associated Press, describes the CR-V Hybrid as roomy with a smooth ride over bumps, while noting that its powertrain can sound noisy and strained on hills. That is a CR-V driving impression, not a direct comparison with the Toyota. AP story provided by Edmunds
- Test the exact trims if comfort, equipment or cargo fit will decide the purchase. Bring the gear you carry and, if possible, drive a route that reflects your hills, traffic and typical speeds.
