The 2024 Subaru Impreza is a practical, all-wheel-drive hatchback with a mild sporting edge—not a hot hatch. In the U.S., every trim pairs a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and EyeSight driver assistance. The Sport adds firmer, sport-tuned suspension, while the RS brings a stronger 2.5-liter engine; neither offers a conventional manual transmission.
What kind of car is the 2024 Impreza?
For the U.S. 2024 model year, the sixth-generation Impreza is sold only as a hatchback, in Base, Sport, and RS trims. All three have standard all-wheel drive and a CVT. That combination gives the Impreza a useful, year-round everyday-car brief, but its sporting character is restrained: the RS adds power and the Sport and RS have sport-tuned suspension, yet there is no manual gearbox or turbocharged engine.
Subaru’s launch announcement listed historical starting MSRPs of $22,995 for Base, $24,995 for Sport, and $27,885 for RS. Those were launch prices for the 2024 model year, not current transaction prices. (Subaru of America via PR Newswire)
How do the Base, Sport, and RS differ?
The key choice is between the less expensive 2.0-liter powertrain and the RS’s 2.5-liter engine. Sport changes the chassis and technology equipment without adding engine output over Base; RS combines the larger engine with the sport-oriented trim equipment.

Engine outputs and trim equipment are Subaru-published U.S. model-year specifications. The fuel-economy figures are EPA estimates, not guaranteed results for every driver. Is the 2024 Impreza sporty?
Somewhat, particularly in RS form, but performance is not the car’s defining strength. The RS’s 2.5-liter engine produces 30 more horsepower and 33 more lb-ft of torque than the 2.0-liter engine in Base and Sport. That makes it the more responsive choice on paper. All three engines are naturally aspirated, however, and every trim uses a CVT.

Car and Driver recorded 7.8 seconds from 0 to 60 mph in its RS test. The publication described the chassis as capable but the car as less peppy than the liveliest hatchbacks, with light steering and brake-pedal feel and only a modest increase in driving excitement alongside its practical ride. That result and those impressions belong to Car and Driver’s test, not a prediction for every car or driver. (Car and Driver’s 2024 Subaru Impreza review)
Does the 2024 Impreza have a manual transmission?
No. The U.S. 2024 Impreza is CVT-only. Sport and RS include an eight-step manual-control mode operated with steering-wheel paddles, which lets a driver select simulated ratios; it does not turn the car into a manual-transmission model. Base also uses a CVT.

How much cargo space does it have?
Subaru lists 19.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 54.7 cubic feet with the seats folded. The rear seat folds in a 60/40 split, so owners can expand the load area while retaining a rear seating position. Car and Driver reports a 56-cubic-foot maximum with the rear seats down; that is a different published figure, so it should not be treated as identical to Subaru’s measurement. (Subaru 2024 Impreza At-A-Glance; Car and Driver’s 2024 Subaru Impreza review)
What are the fuel-economy estimates?
Subaru’s EPA estimates are 27 mpg city, 34 highway, and 30 combined for the 2.0-liter Base and Sport, and 26 city, 33 highway, and 29 combined for the 2.5-liter RS. Car and Driver reported that its tested RS exceeded its EPA highway rating by 4 mpg on the publication’s 75-mph highway route. That is one test result under one set of conditions, not an expected result for all owners. (2024 Subaru Impreza brochure; Car and Driver’s 2024 Subaru Impreza review)

What safety and infotainment equipment is included?
Driver assistance
EyeSight is standard across the lineup. Subaru lists features including adaptive cruise control with lane centering, pre-collision braking and throttle management, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are available on Sport through a package and standard on RS; they are not listed as standard on Base. Confirm the installed equipment on a specific vehicle. (Subaru Impreza trims and specifications; Subaru 2024 Impreza At-A-Glance; Consumer Reports 2024 Impreza overview)
Displays and phone integration
Base uses two 7-inch displays and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Sport and RS have an 11.6-inch STARLINK Multimedia Plus system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Subaru lists wireless phone charging as standard on RS. (Subaru 2024 Impreza At-A-Glance)

Who should choose each trim?
- Base: The straightforward choice if standard AWD, EyeSight, and hatchback utility matter more than larger wheels, the bigger screen, or added power.
- Sport: A middle ground for buyers who want the sport-tuned suspension and larger infotainment screen but do not need the RS engine. Its blind-spot and rear cross-traffic equipment depends on the selected package.
- RS: The pick for the Impreza’s strongest engine and standard blind-spot and rear cross-traffic equipment. It remains a CVT-equipped practical hatchback rather than a manual performance car.
Verdict
The 2024 Impreza makes its case through standard all-wheel drive, standard EyeSight, useful cargo flexibility, and a clear choice between an economical 2.0-liter setup and the stronger RS. Its sporty trims add some character, but the CVT-only lineup and measured performance keep it on the practical side of the hatchback spectrum. Choose the RS for the extra response, Sport for chassis and screen upgrades at the 2.0-liter output, or Base for the essentials.
