2024 Subaru BRZ tS Review: A Focused Chassis Upgrade for a Small Sports Car

The 2024 BRZ tS keeps the BRZ’s 228-hp flat-four and manual gearbox, adding STI-tuned dampers and Brembo brakes for a more focused small sports coupe.

The 2024 Subaru BRZ tS keeps the BRZ’s 228-hp, naturally aspirated flat-four and six-speed manual, then adds its appeal through chassis and braking hardware: STI-tuned Hitachi dampers, Brembo brakes, and summer-performance tires. It is a sharper-edged version of the same compact rear-drive coupe—not a more powerful one. Whether that package is worth choosing depends on how much you value its hardware, how you drive, and whether its firm ride and seasonal tires fit your everyday life.

What the BRZ tS changes—and what it leaves alone

The tS is based on the BRZ Limited and adds equipment aimed at control and driver feel. Subaru’s specifications list the same 2.4-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder and six-speed manual found in the broader BRZ range. The tS is rear-wheel drive, and a Torsen limited-slip differential helps distribute power between the rear wheels.

Area 2024 BRZ tS details
Engine 2,387-cc naturally aspirated flat-four; 228 hp at 7,000 rpm and 184 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm
Transmission and drive Six-speed manual only; rear-wheel drive with Torsen limited-slip differential
Suspension Hitachi dampers; MacPherson-type front struts and double-wishbone rear suspension
Brakes Brembo four-piston front and two-piston rear calipers; ventilated 12.8-inch front and 12.4-inch rear discs
Factory wheels and tires 18-by-7.5-inch wheels with 215/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer-performance tires
Fuel Premium gasoline, 93 AKI

Subaru’s 2024 BRZ brochure also lists tS-specific details such as dark gray metallic wheels, black mirror caps and shark-fin antenna, tS badging, red headlight-logo accents, Ultrasuede and leather upholstery with blue stitching, STI-branded digital-cluster accents, and an STI engine-start button.

How it drives: capable, communicative, and still firm

The tS’s hardware is intended to sharpen response and braking rather than transform the car into a different kind of sports car. It remains a small, naturally aspirated coupe that rewards smooth inputs and a driver willing to work the manual gearbox. Its power output is modest by modern performance-car standards, but the rear-drive layout, limited-slip differential, and compact dimensions make the driving experience about balance and involvement more than straight-line force.

Road & Track: front-end composure, with a rear-suspension caveat

After driving the car on wet, rough mountain roads in Sicily, Raphael Orlove of Road & Track described it as “an easy car to talk to, an easy car to handle out here.” He credited the front Hitachi Sensitive Frequency Response Dampers with helping the nose absorb road imperfections, but also noted that the rear dampers were not upgraded in the same way and questioned the front-to-rear balance. That is one reviewer’s impression on a particular route, not a universal prediction of how every driver will experience the car.

MotorWeek: more track-focused hardware, unchanged output

MotorWeek characterized the suspension and brake changes as making the tS more track-capable, while noting that engine output remains 228 hp and 184 lb-ft. In its test, MotorWeek recorded 6.1 seconds to 60 mph and a 14.5-second quarter-mile at 99 mph. The outlet noted unusually cold conditions, so those results are a record of that test rather than a guaranteed time for every car or driver.

Car and Driver: another acceleration result

Car and Driver reported 5.5 seconds to 60 mph in its manual tS test and praised the BRZ’s steering feedback, cornering composure, and playful but firm ride. The difference between its figure and MotorWeek’s is a reminder that measured acceleration depends on test procedure and conditions; neither number should be read as a promise of what every owner will record.

Is the tS worth choosing over a BRZ Limited?

The practical question is whether the tS’s specialized brakes, dampers, and tire-and-wheel package matter enough to you to justify choosing this trim. The tS does not provide additional engine power, and it is not offered with an automatic transmission. If you want more power or an automatic, the tS is not the answer; compare other trims or models instead.

  • Improves steering stability and precision during high-performance driving
  • Easy installation with included hardware, no special tools required
  • Lightweight design adds minimal weight to your vehicle while maximizing performance
  • Choose the tS for its hardware if you value the Brembo brakes and STI-tuned dampers, drive on winding roads, or expect to use the car for occasional track events.
  • Compare the Limited carefully if you want the BRZ’s core rear-drive, manual-transmission character but do not place much value on the tS-specific chassis and brake equipment. Confirm current local trim equipment and pricing with a Subaru retailer.
  • Think about climate and tire use before committing to the factory summer tires. The 215/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 is specified for summer performance, so check the tire placard, ratings, local availability, and seasonal needs. In climates with cold or wintry weather, a separate appropriate tire setup may be needed.

There is no universal “worth it” verdict independent of market price, driving use, and climate. The tS makes the clearest case when its added control hardware is something you will use and appreciate, rather than equipment you are paying for only on paper.

What ownership practicality looks like

The BRZ tS is a 2+2 coupe, not a four-seat daily car in the conventional sense. Subaru lists 41.5 inches of front legroom and 29.9 inches in the rear, making the back seats better suited to occasional passengers or extra storage than regular adult transport.

The trunk measures 6.3 cubic feet, with additional carrying capacity when the rear seatback is folded. That gives the BRZ some useful flexibility for bags or larger items, but buyers who routinely carry passengers and cargo should assess the space in person before purchase.

Subaru lists a 101.4-inch wheelbase, 167.9-inch length, 69.9-inch width, 51.6-inch height, and 5.1-inch minimum ground clearance. Its approximately 2,850-pound curb weight reinforces the car’s compact, lightweight character, while the low clearance is worth keeping in mind around steep driveways and rough roads.

Performance numbers and price need context

Independent acceleration results are not directly interchangeable. MotorWeek measured 6.1 seconds to 60 mph and a 14.5-second quarter-mile at 99 mph in its 2024 test, which it said took place in unusually cold conditions. Car and Driver recorded 5.5 seconds to 60 mph in its own manual tS test. Both are publication test results, not manufacturer guarantees or a promise of an owner’s result.

For pricing context, Subaru Canada’s 2024 announcement listed a C$36,295 starting MSRP for the Canadian-market tS and a C$38,823 estimated vehicle price. Those are historical Canadian figures, not a U.S. sticker price or an estimate of today’s used-market value. The price you encounter now depends on country, condition, mileage, and local market.

Verdict: a more focused BRZ, not a faster one

The 2024 BRZ tS is a compelling choice for drivers who want a manual, rear-drive coupe with more serious braking hardware and a chassis package tailored to enthusiastic road use. Its identity is clear: retain the accessible, naturally aspirated BRZ formula, then refine the parts that matter when cornering and slowing down. The trade-offs are equally clear—no extra power, no automatic option, firm sports-car character, summer tires that call for climate-aware planning, and very limited rear-seat space.
