2024 Porsche Panamera vs. BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe: Which Should You Buy?

The 2024 Panamera and BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe are best compared trim by trim: the BMW 840i was the lower cited entry point, while Porsche offered AWD and plug-in-hybrid performance options.

The 2024 Porsche Panamera and BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe are four-door luxury performance cars, but the right choice depends on the exact trim. The entry-level Panamera and BMW 840i are both rear-wheel-drive six-cylinder models; the BMW had the lower cited U.S. starting price, while Porsche offered an all-wheel-drive Panamera 4 and a high-output plug-in-hybrid Turbo E-Hybrid. The BMW M850i xDrive is a separate V8, all-wheel-drive proposition—not a like-for-like substitute for the 840i.

2024 Porsche Panamera vs. BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe: the key differences

There is no single answer for either model line. The 2024 Panamera range spans rear- and all-wheel-drive V6 versions and an electrified V8 flagship. BMW’s 8 Series Gran Coupe choices include the rear-drive 840i, an all-wheel-drive 840i xDrive, and the V8-powered M850i xDrive. Compare specific trims, not just badges.

Model Engine and output Drive Acceleration claim Historical U.S. starting price

Prices are historical U.S. launch or comparison-page figures, not current offers. The BMW figures above are from a Cars.com comparison page, not a BMW 2024 specification release. Porsche’s acceleration and top-speed figures are manufacturer claims, not independent test results.

How do the Panamera and BMW compare on power and drivetrain?

Panamera vs. 840i: the entry-level comparison

The rear-drive Panamera pairs its 348-hp, 368-lb-ft turbo V6 with a claimed 5.0-second 0–60 mph time. Cars.com lists the rear-drive 840i at 335 hp and 368 lb-ft, with a $90,800 starting MSRP. The torque figures are the same in that comparison, but the BMW has the lower cited launch/reference price. The available figures do not establish a 2024, like-for-like acceleration comparison.

Panamera 4 vs. 840i xDrive

The Panamera 4 adds all-wheel drive without changing the launch-announced V6 output: it remains at 348 hp and 368 lb-ft, while Porsche’s claimed 0–60 time falls to 4.7 seconds. The 840i xDrive is also an all-wheel-drive six-cylinder configuration, but the cited 2024 comparison does not provide its price, output, or acceleration. Check the exact vehicle’s listing and equipment before treating the two AWD trims as directly matched.

M850i xDrive vs. Turbo E-Hybrid

The M850i xDrive is the BMW choice for a conventional V8 with all-wheel drive: Cars.com lists 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid takes a different route, combining a twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor and a 25.9-kWh battery for Porsche-claimed system output of 670 hp and 685 lb-ft. Porsche announced four E-Hybrid powertrains for the Panamera range, but that announcement does not mean all four were available at launch. If considering a plug-in hybrid, account for charging access and confirm the exact model’s equipment and availability.

BMW Group’s 2019 announcement for the 2020 model launch also lists the 840i at 335 hp and 368 lb-ft, the M850i at 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, and manufacturer 0–60 claims of 4.9 seconds for rear-drive 840i, 4.6 seconds for 840i xDrive, and 3.7 seconds for M850i xDrive. Those are historical launch claims, not verified 2024 acceleration figures, so they should not be used as a direct 2024 test comparison.

What do the historical prices tell you?

In Porsche’s 2023 U.S. launch announcement, the 2024 Panamera started at $99,900 and the Panamera 4 at $106,900; the Panamera price excluded a $1,650 delivery processing and handling fee. Porsche deferred U.S. pricing for the Turbo E-Hybrid in that announcement. Cars.com lists the 2024 BMW 840i at $90,800 and M850i xDrive at $106,300.

These reference figures help frame the original U.S. price ladder, but they are not 2026 dealer quotes. Options, vehicle condition, incentives, dealer pricing, location, and live availability can change the amount a buyer actually pays. Compare the window sticker and current asking price of the specific cars under consideration rather than assuming an old starting MSRP predicts today’s deal.

Which car is more practical for passengers and luggage?

Seating varies by exact Panamera build

Porsche’s overview published October 9, 2025 says Panamera models have four seats standard, with an optional 4+1 arrangement on most versions. A 2024 Cars.com comparison snapshot lists five-seat capacity. Because the evidence reflects differing descriptions and configurations, confirm the seating layout in the specific Panamera’s listing or vehicle documentation before buying.

BMW rear-seat and cargo details

BMW Group’s original 2020 model-launch release describes the 8 Series Gran Coupe as a five-seat car with a 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat. The same release gives approximate dimensions of 200.2 inches long, 76.1 inches wide, and 55.2 inches high, plus a 119-inch wheelbase and 15.5 cubic feet of trunk space. These are figures from the original launch release, not a verified 2024 comparison sheet.

Panamera dimensions and cabin layout

Porsche reports the new Panamera at 198.9 inches long, 76.3 inches wide, and 56 inches high. Its launch materials describe a driver-focused cockpit with the gear selector to the right of the steering wheel, an optional 10.9-inch passenger display, standard LED Matrix Design headlights, and two-chamber air suspension. Confirm which features are fitted to an individual car; equipment can vary by trim and options.

How should you choose between them?

  • Choose the 840i as a starting point to investigate if rear-wheel drive, a six-cylinder engine, and the lower cited historical starting price matter most. Verify the asking price and equipment on a current listing.
  • Consider the Panamera 4 if you want the Panamera’s V6 configuration with all-wheel drive; Porsche’s launch claim gives it a quicker 0–60 time than the rear-drive Panamera.
  • Consider the M850i xDrive if your priority is a gasoline V8 BMW with all-wheel drive. Its output and price sit well above the 840i’s in the cited Cars.com comparison.
  • Consider the Turbo E-Hybrid if the Panamera’s plug-in-hybrid powertrain and its claimed 670-hp system output suit your needs. Verify charging requirements, exact build, and current availability.
  • Check the specific car’s configuration for seats, options, condition, and price. Historical specifications and MSRP cannot establish what a particular used or remaining-new vehicle includes or costs.
