The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E 450 4MATIC makes its strongest case as a quiet, quick, comfort-focused luxury sedan—not a sports sedan. Its turbocharged inline-six, standard all-wheel drive and available air suspension make it appealing for covering long distances. But optional equipment can push the price sharply upward, and the screen-heavy cabin is not an automatic upgrade for every buyer.
This review covers the U.S.-market 2024 E 450 4MATIC sedan, not the All-Terrain wagon or diesel models sold elsewhere. Mercedes’ January 2024 launch prices were $68,100 for Premium trim and $70,650 for Pinnacle; those are historical MSRPs, not current asking or transaction prices.
What the E 450 is—and what its numbers mean
The E 450 is the six-cylinder version of the redesigned 2024 U.S. E-Class sedan. Mercedes pairs a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a nine-speed automatic and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The manufacturer rates the engine at 375 hp at 5,500–6,100 rpm and 369 lb-ft at 1,600–4,500 rpm. The integrated starter-generator can provide up to 23 hp and up to 151 lb-ft of boost; those assistance figures are not additional engine peak output to add to the ratings. Mercedes estimates 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. These are manufacturer specifications and estimates, not results from our own testing. That specification gives the E 450 substantial passing power while keeping the car’s character centered on refinement. In his July 2023 early first drive, Car and Driver’s Mike Sutton called the inline-six “wonderfully smooth and impressively quiet at speed” and said its power helps the sedan “devour miles with ease.” That is an attributed impression from an early drive, not a claim that every driver or road condition will feel the same. How smooth and efficient is it?
The inline-six’s smooth, quiet delivery is central to the E 450’s appeal. The mild-hybrid system supports the powertrain, but the car’s rated output remains 375 hp and 369 lb-ft. Buyers who want a relaxed, strong highway car will find the configuration more relevant than a sports-sedan label: Sutton’s first drive explicitly concluded, “A sports sedan it is not.”
Mercedes lists EPA fuel economy of 22 mpg city, 31 highway and 25 combined for the U.S. E 450. Car and Driver’s later instrumented test reported 24 mpg observed for its test car and listed EPA ratings of 22 city, 31 highway and 25 combined. Is it worth choosing over the E 350?
The E 450’s case over the E 350 is the six-cylinder powertrain and its greater output, not a proven universal value advantage. Mercedes’ January 2024 release priced the E 450 at $68,100 in Premium trim and $70,650 in Pinnacle trim at launch. The later Car and Driver instrumented test reported a test-car base price of $69,150 and an as-tested price of $90,870; that car included options such as Pinnacle trim, AIRMATIC, 21-inch wheels, driver assistance and Superscreen. Consider the E 450 if the smooth six-cylinder and stronger performance matter enough to justify its launch-price premium over the four-cylinder E 350. If the extra output is not a priority, compare the actual cars’ window stickers and equipment rather than assuming the higher trim or option load is essential. The available evidence here does not establish current E 350 pricing or a complete price-and-performance comparison with competing sedans.

Standard suspension or optional AIRMATIC?
The E 450 comes with AGILITY CONTROL selective-damping suspension. Optional AIRMATIC adds air springs, adaptive ADS+ dampers and rear-axle steering with up to 4.5 degrees of wheel movement; it is package equipment, not standard. Car and Driver’s early first-drive reviewer said the system noticeably improved agility in tight turns and gave the car disciplined body control and a comfortable ride, even on 21-inch wheels. That review is useful perspective, not a measured comparison across every wheel and suspension configuration. AIRMATIC is most compelling if you value the reviewer-reported ride and maneuverability benefits and find the added cost acceptable. If you are shopping used, assess the exact car rather than inferring its suspension from the E 450 badge: AIRMATIC and rear steering are optional, and equipment varies.

Does the cabin technology make daily use better?
The standard layout includes a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.4-inch central touchscreen. Mercedes’ quick reference also lists augmented-video navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, inductive wireless charging, a 360-degree camera, Digital Vehicle Key and KEYLESS-GO among standard highlights. The optional MBUX Superscreen adds a 12.3-inch passenger display and selfie/video camera. Mercedes says the passenger can use apps or stream video while the car is moving, with a filtering concept intended to keep the content from the driver’s view. The counterpoint is usability. In its later instrumented test, Car and Driver described the interface as screen-heavy, with few physical buttons, while noting that the redesigned menu structure was simpler. The publication also criticized some optional screen features as gimmicky. Before choosing the Superscreen, try the menus, touch controls and phone integration yourself; a longer feature list does not guarantee a more convenient cabin for your routine. Connected services have their own conditions. Mercedes’ current E-Class page says Digital Extras depend on cellular and GPS service and account pairing; some require third-party service agreements or a separate data plan. Most may be renewed for a fee after an included initial period, if still offered. Terms can change and vary by vehicle and user, so confirm what applies to the specific VIN and account. What should a used-car buyer check?
NHTSA’s manufacturer-submitted Part 573 report 24V-224, dated March 22, 2024, lists 46 2024 E 450 4MATIC sedans in a transmission-wiring-harness routing recall. Mercedes reported that the harness could contact the front drive shaft, potentially damage wiring and cause loss of propulsion without prior warning. The stated remedy is for an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to inspect the routing and rework it if necessary. The 46 vehicles are the reported recall population, not every 2024 E 450. Check the individual VIN for open recalls and confirm whether any required remedy was completed. (NHTSA Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24V-224)
Verdict: a comfort benchmark, not an all-around default
The E 450 makes a strong case for buyers who want a quiet, refined six-cylinder sedan with standard AWD and quick, effortless acceleration. Its optional AIRMATIC package may add useful ride and maneuverability benefits, according to Car and Driver’s first-drive experience. But the E 450 is not best understood as a sports sedan, and the technology, options and potential price escalation call for a careful test drive and equipment check. It can be a compelling midsize luxury choice; whether it is the standard for you depends on how much you value refinement over simplicity and price discipline.
