Yes—the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E 350 4MATIC is unusually fuel-efficient for a full-size luxury sedan with standard all-wheel drive. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and 48-volt mild-hybrid system are EPA-rated at 24 mpg city, 33 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined. Car and Driver recorded 35 mpg on a 75-mph highway route. Add five seats, a 12.7-cubic-foot trunk, a 17.4-gallon tank and strong standard equipment, and the E 350 4MATIC makes a credible long-distance “workhorse” case—provided you accept premium fuel and Mercedes-Benz running costs.
What makes the E 350 4MATIC efficient
The powertrain combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four with a 48-volt integrated starter-generator (ISG), a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz says the ISG can provide up to 23 additional horsepower and 151 lb-ft of assistance at lower engine speeds. Total engine output is 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The mild-hybrid system is not a plug-in setup: you do not charge it from an outlet or drive long distances on electricity alone. Its contribution comes through smoother stop-start operation, energy recuperation and brief electric assistance while the gasoline engine is working.

Fuel economy: strong, but not a universal class victory
| Measure | 2024 E 350 4MATIC result | Context |
|---|---|---|
| City | 24 mpg | EPA rating |
| Highway | 33 mpg | EPA rating |
| Combined | 27 mpg | EPA rating |
| Highway test | 35 mpg | Car and Driver, 75-mph route |
The 27-mpg combined rating is impressive for a 255-hp luxury sedan with standard AWD, and the 35-mpg observed result shows what the car can deliver on a steady highway trip. It is more accurate to call the E 350 4MATIC one of the thriftiest choices in its specific luxury-AWD-sedan context than to claim it beats every rival or every Mercedes model.

Is the four-cylinder E-Class fast enough?
Mercedes-Benz estimates 0–60 mph in 6.1 seconds; Car and Driver measured 5.8 seconds. That is quick enough for highway merges, passing and normal enthusiastic driving, though it is not the same performance proposition as a six-cylinder E 450 or an AMG model. The nine-speed automatic and electric torque assistance help the smaller engine feel responsive in everyday traffic.
Road-trip utility
Range and luggage
The sedan seats five and has a 12.7-cubic-foot trunk. Edmunds lists an estimated EPA range of 417.6 miles in city driving and 574.2 miles on the highway, calculated from the 17.4-gallon fuel tank and EPA economy ratings. Actual range varies with speed, temperature, traffic, tire pressure, payload and driving style.

Required fuel
The E 350 4MATIC requires premium unleaded gasoline. That requirement raises operating cost compared with a similar vehicle designed for regular fuel, even when the Mercedes returns good mileage.

Warranty and scheduled service
Coverage is a four-year/50,000-mile limited and powertrain warranty. Car and Driver reports that complimentary scheduled maintenance is not included. Mercedes-Benz’s 2024 E-Class owner’s manual specifies operating-fluid requirements, including SAE 0W-20 engine oil; follow the manual and the vehicle’s maintenance schedule rather than choosing fluids by price alone.
Price and standard technology
Mercedes-Benz USA listed a $62,300 launch MSRP for the 2024 E 350 4MATIC, before the $1,150 destination charge. That figure is a U.S. launch price from 2023, not a guarantee of a particular used-car price or a heavily optioned car’s final window sticker. Options and packages can push the transaction price substantially higher.

Driver-assistance content should be checked on the individual car’s window sticker: some functions or more advanced capabilities may be packaged or optional, and a 2024 used vehicle may not have the same equipment as another E 350 4MATIC.
Who should buy it?
- Choose it for: efficient highway travel, all-weather traction, a quiet five-seat cabin, useful trunk space and a high level of standard digital equipment.
- Budget for: premium gasoline, luxury-car service, possible option-package costs and no included complimentary scheduled maintenance.
- Look elsewhere if: maximum acceleration, regular-fuel compatibility, a larger cargo opening or included maintenance matters more than sedan comfort and efficiency.
Bottom line
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E 350 4MATIC earns “thriftiest luxury workhorse” as a qualified description, not an across-the-board ranking. Its EPA-rated 27 mpg combined, 35-mpg highway test result, long potential range, five-seat cabin and 12.7-cubic-foot trunk make it an especially capable long-distance luxury sedan. The trade is a four-cylinder performance ceiling, required premium fuel, paid scheduled maintenance and a launch price that excludes destination and options.
