The 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail is the GX to consider if off-road adventure is the priority. Its standard 33-inch all-terrain tires, full-time four-wheel drive, locking center differential and E-KDSS give it meaningful trail-focused equipment. That is a strong starting point—not proof that it suits every trail or expedition, and not a first-hand driving report.
Why the Overtrail is the adventure-focused GX
Lexus positions the Overtrail and Overtrail+ around off-road use. Both come with standard 33-inch all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, a package that makes the trim distinction tangible rather than merely cosmetic. The larger all-terrain tires are intended for rougher surfaces than a road-oriented tire package, though the equipment alone cannot establish how the vehicle will perform on a particular trail.
Lexus also equips the GX with full-time four-wheel drive and a Torsen limited-slip locking center differential. On Overtrail grades, Lexus lists E-KDSS, describing the system as balancing off-road drivability with on-road handling stability. That is the manufacturer’s stated purpose; the available figures do not quantify a handling or articulation advantage.
Car and Driver’s 2024 drive review discusses the Overtrail on washboard dirt roads and describes E-KDSS’s contribution to off-road driving. Those are the publication’s impressions, not results from a test reported here. The review offers a useful road-surface example, but it does not establish capability across every terrain or load.

Powertrain and the trade-offs to consider
The 2024 GX 550 is powered by a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive. Lexus lists 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Those are the manufacturer’s specifications, not a measure of trail performance by themselves.
Lexus’s 2023 preliminary specification table estimates 17 mpg combined. Treat that as a preliminary estimate rather than a promise of real-world economy; terrain, driving style and vehicle load can affect fuel use. The same table gives trim-dependent towing figures, so a single generic GX towing number would be misleading. Confirm the rating for the exact grade and configuration before planning a trailer.

Is the GX 550 Overtrail an overland vehicle?
It has several features relevant to off-road travel: all-terrain tires, full-time 4WD, a locking center differential and, on Overtrail grades, E-KDSS. That equipment supports calling the Overtrail adventure-oriented. It does not settle whether it is the right choice for a particular overland route, where payload, passengers, cargo, range, recovery planning and the terrain itself matter.
For a buyer, the practical next step is to match the exact Overtrail configuration to the trip: check its tire specification and vehicle ratings, then assess whether its cargo and passenger capacity meet the intended load. A trim’s off-road equipment is a starting point for that decision, not a substitute for route-specific planning.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not
