The 2024 Kia models with the most favorable available reliability summaries are the Niro family and the Sportage Hybrid; the Sorento Hybrid’s summary is less favorable, while the EV6 and EV9 summaries are substantially less favorable. That is a comparison of broad Consumer Reports categories—not a precise ranking of every hybrid and electric version. How to read this reliability ranking
This comparison covers the U.S. 2024 model year: the Niro Hybrid, Niro Plug-in Hybrid, Niro EV, Sportage Hybrid, Sportage Plug-in Hybrid, Sorento Hybrid, Sorento Plug-in Hybrid, EV6, and EV9. The EV6 is a crossover rather than a conventionally shaped SUV, but it is included because it is often considered alongside electric SUVs.
The groups below reflect the relative descriptions in Consumer Reports’ model-year summaries. They are not numerical scores on one shared scale, and they do not establish the probability that a particular vehicle will need a repair. Consumer Reports says its reliability history draws on subscriber surveys covering 20 potential trouble areas, including engines, transmissions, electric motors, EV charging, brakes, and electrical accessories.

Which 2024 Kia hybrid SUV has the strongest reliability evidence?
Niro: favorable family-level summary, not three separate verdicts
The Niro has the favorable Consumer Reports summary, but the result is presented for the model family rather than as separate accessible ratings for the Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid, and EV. Treat it as encouraging model-family evidence, not proof that a Niro EV and a Niro Hybrid share the same repair history or risk.
Sportage Hybrid: the strongest specific hybrid summary here
Consumer Reports calls the 2024 Sportage Hybrid much more reliable than other vehicles from that model year. That is the clearest strongly favorable hybrid-specific description in this comparison. It applies to the hybrid summary, not automatically to the Sportage Plug-in Hybrid.

Sorento Hybrid: less favorable than the same-year comparison group
The 2024 Sorento Hybrid’s Consumer Reports summary is less favorable than the same-year vehicle comparison. It does not mean every Sorento Hybrid is unreliable, nor does it supply a specific repair probability for an individual vehicle.
What the evidence says about Kia’s electric models
Consumer Reports describes both the 2024 EV6 and EV9 as much less reliable than other vehicles from the same model year. The owner-reported charging problem on the EV6 page and battery-pack replacement on the EV9 page are examples of reported issues, not evidence of their frequency across all vehicles. A used-car inspection and service record matter more to an individual purchase than an isolated report.

Broader survey results provide context but cannot predict Kia-specific outcomes: Consumer Reports’ 2024 owner survey, as reported by the Associated Press on December 4, 2024, found that EVs had 42% more problems than gas vehicles on average and plug-in hybrids had 70% more problems on average. Conventional gas-electric hybrids were about as reliable as combustion vehicles on average. Those are averages across vehicle brands, not Kia model-specific rates. J.D. Power lists the 2024 Kia Niro’s Quality & Reliability at 77/100, labeled Average, and cautions that it applied previous model-year rating data to the redesigned vehicle. How to use reliability data when buying a used 2024 Kia
A model-level survey can help decide which vehicles merit a closer look, but it cannot tell you whether a specific used car has an open recall, missed maintenance, accident damage, or a documented repair. Before buying, check the vehicle itself:
- Get the VIN. Use the vehicle identification number to check open recalls through NHTSA’s recalls resources.
- Confirm recall repairs. Ask for service records and have a Kia dealer confirm that any applicable recall work is complete.
- Review maintenance and repair history. Look for records tied to the actual vehicle, especially for its powertrain and charging equipment.
- Inspect for your use case. For a plug-in hybrid or EV, consider your charging access and have relevant charging equipment checked. For any used model, arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection.
- Compare the right versions. Check whether the evidence applies to the exact HEV, PHEV, or battery-electric vehicle you are considering; a family-level summary may not distinguish them.
One practical 12-volt battery distinction for Niro owners
Kia America’s 2024 Niro HEV/PHEV feature guide says that if the vehicle appears to have a dead battery, the owner should first press the 12V Battery Reset button and then immediately start the vehicle by pressing the brake and turning the ignition on or pressing the Engine Start/Stop button. The guide also describes jump-starting if needed and recommends contacting a competent technician or towing service if in doubt. This procedure concerns the 12-volt battery; it is not a remedy for a traction-battery or high-voltage fault. Follow the instructions for the exact vehicle.
