The 2024 Harley-Davidson Breakout 117 is a style-led power cruiser built around a huge Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-twin, a long-and-low Softail chassis, a 21-inch front wheel, and a 240-section rear tire. It delivers strong torque and unmistakable presence, but its nearly 700-pound running weight, limited ground clearance, forward controls, solo layout, and lack of standard luggage make it a specialized cruiser rather than an all-rounder.

The 2024 Harley-Davidson Breakout 117 is a style-led power cruiser built around a huge Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-twin, a long-and-low Softail chassis, a 21-inch front wheel, a 240-section rear tire, and extensive chrome. It is visually dramatic and strong on torque, but it is not intended to be the most agile, comfortable, or practical motorcycle in Harley-Davidson’s range.

In U.S. specification, the 2024 Breakout 117 starts at $22,499 MSRP in Billiard Gray. That figure does not include destination, taxes, registration, dealer fees, or accessories. The motorcycle’s standard package includes ABS, traction control, cruise control, a five-gallon fuel tank, a solo seat, and the 117-cubic-inch engine. The trade-off is a relatively heavy, stretched motorcycle with limited ground clearance, forward controls, little wind protection, and no standard passenger or luggage equipment.

2024 Breakout 117 price and market position

Harley-Davidson’s archived U.S. model information lists a starting MSRP of $22,499 for the 2024 Breakout 117. Cycle World reports the same base price for the Billiard Gray version, with selected paint finishes costing extra. Treat that as the motorcycle’s advertised base price—not the amount a buyer will necessarily pay at the dealership. Destination charges, sales tax, registration, setup, documentation fees, dealer-installed accessories, and financing costs are separate.

For context, Harley-Davidson’s 2025 Breakout page lists a starting MSRP of $23,099. That newer figure should not replace the 2024 price when comparing or shopping specifically for a 2024 model. Used-bike prices will vary substantially according to mileage, condition, location, modifications, service history, and whether the seller is a dealer or private party.

Milwaukee-Eight 117 performance

The Breakout’s defining mechanical feature is Harley-Davidson’s air- and oil-cooled Milwaukee-Eight 117. It has 117 cubic inches of displacement, a 10.2:1 compression ratio, electronic sequential port fuel injection, a six-speed transmission, and belt final drive.

Harley-Davidson claims 101 horsepower at 4,750 rpm and 123 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm, using the manufacturer’s stated testing method. Those figures describe engine output as reported by Harley-Davidson. Cycle World’s independent rear-wheel dyno testing recorded 94.25 hp and 118 lb-ft at the rear wheel. The two sets of numbers should not be treated as a contradiction: they were measured at different points and under different test methods, and drivetrain losses occur between the engine and rear tire.

On the road, the important characteristic is not a peak-horsepower contest. The 117 is a large-displacement torque motor designed to deliver substantial shove through normal street riding and relaxed highway use. The standard Heavy Breather intake and offset two-into-two exhaust reinforce the Breakout’s performance-oriented appearance and sound. Harley-Davidson also lists Screamin’ Eagle performance kits, high-flow exhaust systems, and intake upgrades as customization paths, but those are not included in the base motorcycle unless a particular bike’s build sheet says otherwise.

Chassis and handling: stable, but physically demanding at low speed

The Breakout’s stance comes from more than styling. It combines a 66.7-inch wheelbase, 34-degree rake, 5.7 inches of trail, a large 21-inch front wheel, and a wide 240/40R18 rear tire. Together, those dimensions create the planted custom-cruiser profile buyers expect from the model.

Cycle World’s testing describes the motorcycle as stable and predictable in long sweepers. The same basic geometry also explains why it can require more deliberate steering input in parking lots, tight turns, and other low-speed situations than a shorter, narrower cruiser. That is an engineering-based ownership implication, not a claim that every rider will experience the motorcycle identically.

At 683 pounds in running order, the Breakout also demands planning when pushing it around, backing into a parking space, or correcting a slow-speed mistake. Its 25.6-inch laden seat height can help shorter riders reach the ground, but a low seat does not make a nearly 700-pound motorcycle effortless to manage.

Suspension and cornering limitations

Up front is a 49 mm dual-bending-valve telescopic fork. At the rear, a hidden coil-over monoshock provides tool-less hydraulic preload adjustment. Harley-Davidson lists 43 mm of rear-shock stroke; Cycle World lists 5.0 inches of front travel and 3.4 inches of rear travel.

The limited 4.5 inches of ground clearance and relatively short rear travel matter if your priorities include aggressive cornering, broken pavement, speed bumps, or carrying substantial luggage. The Breakout can be enjoyable on smooth roads and sweeping curves, but its long, low configuration is not the same as a sport-oriented chassis or an adventure-tourer suspension package.

Brakes, ABS, and traction control

The front brake uses a four-piston fixed caliper, while the rear uses a two-piston floating caliper. ABS and traction control are listed as standard equipment. These systems can help manage braking and wheel slip, but they do not compensate for excessive speed, poor tires, unsafe following distances, wet pavement, or inadequate rider training.

Wheels, tires, and fuel range

The factory wheel package uses gloss-black 26-spoke cast-aluminum wheels with machined details. The front wheel measures 21 inches and the rear 18 inches. Factory tire sizes are a 130/60B21 front and a broad 240/40R18 rear, both Michelin Scorcher 11 fitments.

The owner’s manual lists the FXBR rear tire as a Michelin Scorcher 11 240/40R18 79V BW at 42 psi cold, and the front as a 130/60B21 63H BW at 36 psi cold. Before inflating, replacing, or changing tires, check the current motorcycle labels and manual. Pressure can vary with model, load, temperature, and market. Do not choose a replacement based solely on size: confirm load rating, speed rating, construction, wheel compatibility, and current manufacturer fitment.

Harley-Davidson lists a five-gallon fuel tank and estimated fuel economy of 47 mpg. Multiplying those figures produces a theoretical 235-mile figure, but that is not a guaranteed usable range. Speed, traffic, temperature, rider weight, luggage, terrain, and riding style all affect consumption, and riders should refuel before relying on the last part of the tank.

Ergonomics and everyday comfort

The Breakout prioritizes a stretched custom-cruiser appearance. Its equipment includes dropped handlebars, forward controls, a solo seat, and a bobbed rear fender. That arrangement gives the motorcycle its distinctive silhouette, but it also places the rider in an extended posture with the feet well forward.

Milwaukee Leather - Once You Have It, You Love It.

Rider fit is particularly important. Cycle World noted that the extended riding position may be less accommodating for some taller riders, including possible interference between the rider’s knee and the Heavy Breather intake. That is a tester observation rather than a universal defect; prospective buyers should sit on the motorcycle and move through their normal steering and leg positions before purchasing.

There is also little inherent wind protection. The Breakout may be comfortable for shorter rides and open-road cruising, but riders planning frequent high-speed travel should budget for an appropriate windshield and should not assume that the standard configuration offers touring-level weather protection.

Passenger and luggage practicality

The standard solo seat and bobbed rear fender are central to the Breakout’s visual identity. They also mean the stock motorcycle is not passenger-ready in the way a touring model is. A passenger pillion, foot controls, backrest or sissy bar, and related hardware may be required for two-up use.

Harley-Davidson’s accessory ecosystem includes passenger pillions, backrests, sissy bars, luggage racks, saddlebags, windshields, docking hardware, and turn-signal or license-plate relocation components. Exact fitment must be checked by model and year.

Harley-Davidson lists detachable saddlebags as fitting 2018–2024 FXBR models among other Softail applications. The product information also identifies required model-specific docking hardware and, in some configurations, license-plate or turn-signal relocation kits. In other words, saddlebags are a possible way to add useful carrying capacity, but they should not be treated as a universal, simple bolt-on purchase. Verify the complete installation requirements for the exact 2024 Breakout configuration.

Instrumentation and equipment

The Breakout uses a 2.14-inch viewable-area LCD display. It can show speed, gear, odometer, fuel level, clock, trip information, range, and tachometer information. The headlamp and signature position lamp are primarily LED, while the listed stop, tail, and turn-signal equipment includes incandescent elements.

Cruise control, ABS, traction control, the five-gallon tank, and adjustable rear preload add practical value to what is otherwise a highly style-focused motorcycle. They do not change the underlying mission: this is still a solo-oriented power cruiser with limited storage and modest ground clearance.

Maintenance and storage considerations

Battery care

The owner’s manual identifies a quick-disconnect battery-tender connector and recommends using an automatic, constant-monitoring charger or tender during storage or between rides. This is especially relevant for seasonal riders or anyone who leaves the Breakout parked for extended periods.

An automatic motorcycle battery tender is a sensible storage item, but verify the battery chemistry, voltage, connector, and charger compatibility before connecting it. Use the motorcycle’s manual and the charger’s instructions rather than assuming that every 12-volt charger is appropriate for every battery type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Oil and service information

The manual and Harley-Davidson’s model specifications identify a 5-quart oil capacity with filter. That number should not be used as a substitute for the complete service procedure. Follow the applicable 2024 owner’s or service manual for the correct fluid specification, checking procedure, maintenance interval, and disposal requirements. Milwaukee-Eight branding alone is not a reason to generalize service details from another model.

Storage checklist

  • Connect a compatible automatic battery tender through the factory quick-disconnect connector when the motorcycle will sit for an extended period.
  • Check tire pressures cold and inspect both tires for cuts, cracking, uneven wear, and age-related deterioration.
  • Keep the motorcycle clean and dry, particularly around chrome, wheels, controls, and exposed fasteners.
  • If using a motorcycle cover, compare the cover’s dimensions with the Breakout’s 93.3-inch length and account for any windshield, saddlebags, or other accessories.
  • Before riding after storage, check fluid leaks, brake operation, lighting, throttle movement, belt condition, and battery security.

Recall and used-bike buying checks

Do not rely on a generic statement that the 2024 FXBR has “no recalls.” Recall status is best checked for the individual motorcycle using its VIN. NHTSA provides vehicle-safety resources for recall searches, and its process allows owners and shoppers to check a vehicle’s current campaign information.

Before buying a used Breakout 117:

  1. Obtain the full 17-character VIN and run a VIN-specific recall search through NHTSA’s vehicle safety resources.
  2. Ask for service records and confirm that scheduled maintenance was performed.
  3. Inspect the 240-section rear tire, belt, wheels, fork, shock area, brake components, and chrome for damage or neglect.
  4. Check whether intake, exhaust, tuning, suspension, or lighting modifications have been installed and whether the original parts are included.
  5. Confirm that any passenger equipment, saddlebags, docking hardware, or relocation kit is actually compatible with the 2024 FXBR.
  6. Price the bike after adding taxes, registration, dealer fees, required repairs, insurance, and the accessories needed for your intended use.

Who should buy the 2024 Breakout 117?

The Breakout 117 makes the most sense for a rider who values:

  • Visual presence and extensive chrome detailing
  • Large-displacement V-twin torque
  • A long-and-low custom-cruiser stance
  • A 21-inch front wheel and 240-section rear tire
  • Solo riding and open-road cruising
  • Factory ABS, traction control, cruise control, and adjustable rear preload

A different Softail or a touring-oriented Harley-Davidson may be a better fit if your priorities are passenger comfort, built-in luggage, wind protection, lower weight, greater cornering clearance, or frequent long-distance travel. The Breakout can be adapted with accessories, but adding seats, luggage, wind protection, and docking hardware increases both cost and complexity—and may dilute the clean solo-bike appearance that makes the model appealing in the first place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

The 2024 Harley-Davidson Breakout 117 is a specialized power cruiser, not an all-purpose motorcycle. Its 117-cubic-inch Milwaukee-Eight delivers the character and torque expected from a large Harley-Davidson, while the long wheelbase, 21-inch front wheel, wide rear tire, low stance, and chrome-heavy finish create a distinctive presence.

Its limitations are equally clear: substantial running weight, deliberate low-speed handling, limited ground clearance, forward-control ergonomics, minimal weather protection, and a standard configuration designed around solo riding. At $22,499 before additional charges, it is most compelling for buyers who specifically want that combination of style, torque, and attitude—not for someone seeking the lightest, most versatile, or most practical motorcycle available.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the 2024 Harley-Davidson Breakout 117 cost?

The 2024 Breakout 117 starts at $22,499 MSRP in the U.S. for Billiard Gray. Destination, taxes, registration, dealer fees, and accessories are extra.

How much power does the 2024 Breakout 117 make?

Harley-Davidson claims 123 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm and 101 horsepower at 4,750 rpm. Cycle World’s rear-wheel dyno recorded 118 lb-ft and 94.25 horsepower; those measurements are not directly interchangeable with manufacturer engine-output figures.

What is the 2024 Breakout 117’s fuel range?

The motorcycle has a 5.0-gallon tank and Harley-Davidson-estimated fuel economy of 47 mpg. That suggests a theoretical 235 miles, but actual usable range varies with riding conditions and should not be treated as guaranteed.

Yes. ABS and traction control are listed as standard equipment. They are safety aids, not substitutes for appropriate speed, tires, rider training, or safe following distances.

Can the Breakout 117 carry a passenger and luggage?

The standard motorcycle has a solo seat and no built-in luggage. Passenger seats, backrests, sissy bars, saddlebags, docking hardware, and other accessories are available, but exact 2024 FXBR fitment and any required relocation kits must be confirmed.

Check the individual motorcycle’s VIN through NHTSA’s vehicle-safety resources before purchase or operation. A generic model-year statement is not a substitute for a VIN-specific recall search.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the 2024 Breakout 117 for its torque-rich Milwaukee-Eight 117, dramatic long-and-low styling, and solo power-cruiser character. Choose another Softail or a touring model if passenger use, luggage, wind protection, low weight, or maximum cornering clearance matters more.
