Ratings vary by trim and drivetrain, so compare the exact version you plan to buy.
Which 2024 crossover gets the best gas mileage?
The 2024 Kia Niro FE hybrid is the efficiency leader among the crossover-like small SUVs in the figures listed here: the U.S. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency’s 2024 Fuel Economy Guide rates it at 53 mpg combined, with 53 mpg city and 54 mpg highway. The guide lists the regular Niro hybrid at 49 mpg combined (53 city/45 highway). Both are hybrid electric vehicles, not conventional gasoline-only versions, and the FE designation matters: it is rated more efficiently than the regular Niro hybrid.
This is a selection of useful, configuration-specific comparisons—not a complete ranking of every 2024 crossover trim. “Crossover” is a common consumer term, not a single EPA vehicle class. The EPA’s classification and methodology information explains that SUVs can be categorized as cars or trucks under regulatory definitions depending on their attributes. An exhaustive ranking therefore needs a clearly defined vehicle-inclusion rule.

These ratings show why model name alone is not enough: drivetrain and trim can change the result. Combined MPG is the most useful quick comparison, while city and highway figures help indicate how a vehicle is rated across those driving conditions.

The Niro is a small hybrid crossover, while the Sportage Hybrid is larger, according to Edmunds’ comparison hosted by AP News. That makes the Niro’s figure compelling for buyers prioritizing fuel economy, but MPG alone does not establish which vehicle best fits a household’s passenger or cargo needs.
How drivetrain and trim affect fuel economy
Two-wheel drive versus all-wheel drive
The 2024 CR-V Hybrid is rated at 40 mpg combined with 2WD and 37 mpg combined with AWD. The 2WD version also has higher listed city and highway figures. Compare the drivetrain you actually want; the 40-mpg rating should not be applied to every CR-V Hybrid.

Trim-specific ratings

How to treat the RAV4 Prime’s rating
The RAV4 Prime is a plug-in hybrid, so its 94 combined MPGe rating is not gasoline MPG and should not be placed in the same ranking as the hybrids above. Toyota also reports 42 miles of electric-only range. Those figures describe a vehicle that can use electricity for some driving; they are a separate comparison from conventional hybrid gas mileage. What these mileage numbers do—and do not—tell you
The model-specific figures above come from consumer-facing fuel-economy ratings or the cited editorial comparison. They should not be confused with the EPA’s fleetwide Automotive Trends statistics, which use a different method. The EPA’s 2025 report highlights put average model-year 2024 new-vehicle fuel economy at 27.2 mpg and truck SUVs at 25.7 mpg. Those are production-weighted fleet context figures, not ratings for individual crossover models.
The EPA says its Automotive Trends database uses estimated real-world city/highway results based on expanded “5-cycle” testing, and that model-year 1975–2024 data are final and based on official information submitted to EPA and NHTSA. Its figures are weighted by U.S. model-year deliveries, so they can differ from calendar-year sales statistics or other published figures. How to choose among these efficient crossovers
- Prioritize maximum rated fuel economy: Compare the Niro FE hybrid’s 53 mpg combined rating with the regular Niro hybrid’s 49 mpg.
- Want a larger compact crossover: Compare the CR-V Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Escape Hybrid and Sportage Hybrid, checking the exact trim and drivetrain rather than relying on a model-wide headline figure.
- Need all-wheel drive: Use the AWD-specific CR-V figure, and check the rating for the specific RAV4 or other configuration under consideration.
- Considering a plug-in: Keep MPGe and electric-only range distinct from gasoline MPG, and consider whether the plug-in format suits your charging routine.
