There is not enough comparable evidence to rank ten 2024 body-on-frame SUVs by reliability. The strongest 2024 dependability evidence from J.D. Power concerns three-year-old vehicles—corresponding to the 2021 model year—while a separate J.D. Power table gives owner-rating figures for five large SUVs. Those are different measures, and neither supports a precise ten-place ranking of 2024 models.
Why a ten-SUV reliability ranking would be misleading
“Full-frame” usually means body-on-frame construction. But a large-SUV category is not proof that every vehicle in it uses that construction, and the available category list does not verify each model’s chassis or its 2024 availability in every market. Check the automaker’s specifications for the exact model year and market before treating any candidate as a confirmed body-on-frame SUV.
There is a second problem: reliability evidence depends on what was measured and which model years it covers. J.D. Power’s 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) surveyed owners of three-year-old vehicles about problems experienced in the previous 12 months. It is therefore evidence about 2021 vehicles, not a long-term record for newly sold 2024 SUVs. J.D. Power says the study is informed by more than 80,000 verified owners and explains its scoring this way: “The fewer the number of problems reported by car owners, the higher the score.” J.D. Power’s 2024 Dependability Awards and Ratings describes the study and its awards.
That distinction matters: a dependable earlier generation can be a useful historical signal, but it does not establish the reliability of a redesigned or mechanically changed successor. Nor should an owner-rating figure from a model page be treated as a VDS dependability score.

What the 2024 dependability study can establish
J.D. Power named the 2021 Toyota 4Runner the Midsize SUV winner and the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe the Large SUV winner in its 2024 VDS awards. These are the clearest award-based reliability signals in the available evidence, but both awards belong to 2021 vehicles.
The awards can help identify models with a positive historical signal. They do not rank the 2024 versions against one another, cover ten SUVs, or prove that a 2024 successor will repeat the earlier vehicle’s performance. See the 2024 award results for the study’s model-year context.

A J.D. Power page for the 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe displays a Large SUV owner-rating table with the figures below. The page cautions that ratings may rely on previous model-year data until new survey data becomes available. These are values from that table—not the VDS award results above and not long-term reliability scores.

Which other SUVs belong in a candidate search?
J.D. Power’s VDS category list identifies models in its Large SUV and Large Premium SUV groups. That list can help a buyer build a research shortlist; it does not confirm body-on-frame construction, 2024-market availability, or a reliability rank for each vehicle.
- Large SUV category: Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon, Jeep Wagoneer, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia.

How to use reliability data when choosing a 2024 SUV
Separate historical dependability from a newer model’s record
Start with the exact model year and generation represented by a study. Treat the 4Runner and Tahoe awards as historical evidence for their 2021 versions, not as guarantees for 2024 vehicles. For a substantially changed generation or powertrain, look for evidence specific to that configuration rather than carrying over an older vehicle’s result.
Check what each score measures
Before comparing numbers, identify whether a source reports problems in an owner survey, predicted reliability, early ownership satisfaction, or a rating from a model page. Similar-looking figures do not necessarily measure the same thing. For example, Consumer Reports says its reliability-history charts draw on subscriber survey information covering about 380,000 vehicles and 20 potential trouble spots; those are descriptions of its overall survey framework, not a GX-only sample. Its accessible 2024 Lexus GX result did not provide a specific score, so no GX rating can be inferred from those figures. Consumer Reports’ 2024 Lexus GX reliability page gives that survey context.

Evaluate the individual vehicle, not just the nameplate
For a used SUV, use the VIN to check current recall information and review the vehicle’s maintenance and repair records. The study results describe groups of owners’ vehicles; they do not establish whether a particular SUV was maintained well, repaired correctly, or affected by an open recall.
Match the SUV to the job
Third-row space, cargo needs, towing, off-road use, and luxury equipment are buying considerations, not reliability measurements. Compare those needs separately from the available evidence, and do not let a category label or a single owner-rating figure stand in for a model-specific reliability record.
What can be ranked—and what cannot
The available evidence supports two kinds of comparison: the 2021 models that won J.D. Power’s 2024 dependability categories, and five SUVs’ figures in a separate 2024 model-page owner-rating table. It does not establish a consistent reliability measure for ten 2024 body-on-frame SUVs, or a defensible overall order among them. A precise top-ten ranking would imply evidence that these sources do not provide.
