The 2024 BMW X2 M35i xDrive has the pace and attitude to evoke a hot hatch, but it is a compact crossover with a coupe-like roofline—not a low-slung hatchback or a full M car. BMW’s M Performance model delivers a manufacturer-quoted 0–60 mph in 5.2 seconds; first-drive reviewers, however, found its ride notably firm and its steering short on feedback. Its appeal rests on acceleration, standout styling and improved space, balanced against a roughly $9,400 launch-price premium over the xDrive28i before destination.
Is the BMW X2 M35i a hot hatch?
In spirit, it comes close: the M35i is a quick, compact BMW with a performance-focused setup and a bolder look than a conventional small SUV. In shape and classification, it is not a hot hatch. BMW calls the X2 a “Sports Activity Coupe”; the M35i is an elevated crossover with a sloping roof, and its M badge denotes BMW M Performance rather than a full M model.
That distinction matters when judging the car. The M35i offers the acceleration and visual drama associated with a hot hatch, but its size, ride and driving character are those of a sporty crossover. BMW says more than 380,000 first-generation X2s had been sold worldwide by the second-generation launch, a manufacturer-reported cumulative figure, not a measure of the M35i’s specific demand. BMW’s October 2023 launch announcement sets out the new model’s specifications.
What changed between the xDrive28i and M35i?
Both U.S.-launch versions use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The M35i adds power, standard all-wheel drive and standard Adaptive M suspension. BMW’s October 2023 figures and launch MSRPs are below; its 0–60 mph times are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results.

The launch MSRP difference was $9,400 before destination. Edmunds listed the M35i at $52,395 including destination at the time of its first-drive review; these are launch-era reference prices, not current pricing. Equipment and pricing can vary by configuration and market.
How harsh is the X2 M35i ride?
Firmness is the clearest drawback in the first drives. Edmunds’ Steven Ewing found the ride too harsh for the M35i’s own good, particularly on the tested car’s 20-inch wheels and summer tires. He also noted that the adaptive dampers kept body motion controlled in corners and helped the car resist nose dive under hard braking. In Sport mode, the steering gained weight, but not much feedback. Edmunds’ verdict was that the M35i was difficult to justify over the less expensive X2.

Ars Technica’s Jonathan M. Gitlin also reported a firm ride, with lateral jostling over low-speed bumps and potholes despite the standard adaptive dampers. On twisty roads, he found steering feel limited rather than especially engaging. Those are reviewers’ impressions from their respective drives, not instrumented measurements.
BMW describes the frequency-selective Adaptive M dampers as balancing small-bump comfort with sporty responses. That is the manufacturer’s design claim; the reviewers’ experience suggests the M35i’s standard setup can feel stiff in everyday conditions. Edmunds’ tested car also had optional M Sport Compound brakes, with 15.2-inch front and 13.0-inch rear discs; that brake equipment should not be assumed on every M35i.

Is the M35i worth it over the xDrive28i?
The M35i’s case is straightforward if acceleration and the performance trim’s equipment matter more than comfort or value. BMW’s quoted 0–60 time is one second quicker than the xDrive28i’s, and Adaptive M suspension is standard rather than optional. The trade-off is the higher launch price and the standard 20-inch wheel-and-tire package that accompanied the firm ride in Edmunds’ test.
- Choose the M35i if you want the quicker X2, its distinctive M Performance styling and standard Adaptive M suspension, and you can accept a firm ride.
- Consider the xDrive28i if the M35i’s extra pace is not worth the launch-price premium to you. Adaptive M suspension was available as an option, so compare the exact equipment and price of the cars you are considering.
Edmunds described the X2 as a more stylish version of the traditionally shaped X1, a useful shorthand for the design trade-off. The X2’s coupe-like silhouette is the more expressive choice; the X1 keeps a more upright form. The available first-drive evidence does not establish a controlled, same-day comparison that would justify a broader claim about which is better to drive or more practical.

How much cargo space does the 2024 BMW X2 have?
BMW lists seating for five and 25.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seats, increasing to 51.7 cubic feet with them folded. The second row folds in a 40:20:40 split, letting occupants and cargo share the space more flexibly. BMW also says the redesigned X2 gained rear kneeroom and has a 106-inch wheelbase. These are manufacturer specifications; actual usable space depends on how cargo is packed.

The launch specification includes BMW Operating System 9, also called iDrive 9, on a curved display, with navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Active blind-spot detection and forward collision mitigation are listed as standard. Exact equipment can vary with configuration; BMW lists driver-assistance features and packages separately.

Reviewers differed on the infotainment experience. Edmunds found iDrive 9 easier to use than the previous iDrive 8 and liked its configurable shortcuts. Ars Technica reported that the system felt underpowered and noted the absence of a rotary iDrive controller, leaving touchscreen and voice interaction. Gitlin praised the navigation’s augmented view and My BMW App features, while also noting an A-pillar blind spot, a small rear window, no rear wiper and an awkward cabin storage cubby.
Driving Assistant Professional is optional. BMW says it includes adaptive cruise and distance control, steering assistance and Traffic Jam Assistant. Its hands-free function is limited to qualifying limited-access highway traffic at speeds up to 40 mph and still requires an attentive driver; it is not autonomous driving. BMW’s launch release describes the feature and its limits.
What the first drives say about the X2 M35i
The M35i makes a stronger case as a fast, distinctive crossover than as a true hot-hatch substitute. It is meaningfully quicker on BMW’s claimed figures than the xDrive28i, and the redesigned X2 brings more room than its predecessor. But the two first drives converge on the main compromise: a notably firm ride and limited steering feedback. For buyers drawn to the shape and pace, that may be an acceptable trade; for those expecting a supple daily driver or an especially involving back-road car, it is a substantial one.
