The 2024 BMW R 1300 GS is a substantial redesign of the R 1250 GS, with a larger boxer engine, higher claimed output, revised chassis and packaging, and a new generation of Vario luggage. BMW lists the 1300 at 145 hp and 110 lb-ft, compared with 136 hp and 105 lb-ft for the predecessor. Those are manufacturer figures, not proof of a particular real-world performance gain; a test ride on the exact configurations remains the useful way to judge how the bikes compare.
Engine and claimed output
BMW says the R 1300 GS has a newly developed 1,300 cc boxer engine. In its launch announcement, BMW lists output at 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and 110 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm. The same release gives the R 1250 GS figures as 136 hp and 105 lb-ft, with peak torque at 6,250 rpm. These are BMW’s published specifications; they do not establish how much quicker either motorcycle will feel in a particular riding situation.
BMW’s 2023 launch announcement describes the 1300 as a redesigned motorcycle with increased power and torque, reduced weight and a more compact design. Treat those characterizations as the manufacturer’s claims rather than independent comparative test results.
Weight, chassis and dimensions
BMW Motorrad USA lists the R 1300 GS at 237 kg ready to ride for the configuration described on its technical-data page. The figure is specific to that US listing and its measurement definition. It should not be turned into a numerical weight saving over the R 1250 GS without matching figures for the same market, equipment, fuel basis and model-year specification.

The US technical page also identifies a two-part frame, EVO-Telelever front suspension and EVO-Paralever rear suspension. Listed suspension travel is 190 mm at the front and 200 mm at the rear, with a 1,518 mm wheelbase. These specifications establish the 1300’s revised hardware, but not how each rider will perceive its handling or comfort.
For the standard R 1300 GS listing, BMW gives an 850 mm seat height and 19 l usable tank capacity. Seat options and installed equipment can affect the specific motorcycle, so verify the configuration and market sheet for any bike being considered. BMW lists ECO, RAIN, ROAD and ENDURO as standard riding modes for the R 1300 GS. Its support page describes these modes for different riding conditions. Other assistance and convenience equipment can depend on option packages and regional specification; do not assume that a feature shown on one bike is standard on every 1300, or present on every 1250.

Vario luggage does not carry over
BMW explicitly states that R 1250 GS and R 1300 GS Vario luggage systems are incompatible. The 1300 generation’s redesigned cases and topcase have continuously adjustable volume and provision for charging devices inside the luggage. Owners moving between generations should confirm accessory generation and fitment before buying or budgeting around existing cases. The R 1300 GS is the choice to investigate if you want BMW’s newer design, higher published engine output and revised chassis. The R 1250 GS remains the relevant comparison if its configuration, condition or ownership costs better suit your needs; this specification comparison alone cannot determine which is the better buy.

Compare the actual motorcycles by market, model year, options, seat and suspension setup, and weight measurement basis. Ask dealers for dated, itemized quotes and, where possible, ride both bikes in the configurations you are considering. BMW’s official figures clarify what changed on paper; only a like-for-like evaluation can answer which one works better for you.
