The 2024 BMW 5 Series brought a first for the nameplate: an all-electric model, the i5, joining a larger sedan with a redesigned digital cabin, new driver-assistance technology and updated gasoline engines. The details below focus on BMW’s U.S. launch lineup and specifications announced in May 2023; models and equipment vary by market, and launch prices are not current quotes.
1. The 5 Series added its first all-electric model
For the 2024 model year, BMW offered the 5 Series as an electric car for the first time. In the U.S. launch lineup, the i5 came in two versions: the rear-wheel-drive i5 eDrive40 and the all-wheel-drive i5 M60 xDrive. They joined gasoline 530i models, with the 540i xDrive scheduled to begin production in November 2023.
BMW’s global lineup was different. Its release described European 520i and 520d versions and said a 530e plug-in hybrid was planned from spring 2024. Those regional plans should not be read as U.S. launch availability. BMW’s U.S. launch announcement and its global release provide the market-specific lineups.
BMW listed the i5 eDrive40 at 335 hp and the i5 M60 xDrive at 593 hp. The i5 battery has 84.3 kWh of usable energy, according to BMW. The company also specified a maximum charging rate of 205 kW and 30 minutes for DC charging from 10 to 80 percent at that rate. These are manufacturer figures, not independent test results.

2. The sedan grew in every exterior dimension
Compared with its predecessor, the U.S.-market 2024 sedan is 3.4 inches longer, 1.3 inches wider and 1.4 inches taller, BMW reported. Its wheelbase grew by 0.8 inch, to 117.9 inches.
BMW said the longer wheelbase improves seating comfort, particularly for rear passengers. The launch material does not provide a directly comparable measurement of passenger room, so the exterior dimensions alone do not establish how much more interior space occupants gain.

3. The cabin shifted to a curved digital display and new controls
The redesigned dashboard centers on BMW’s Curved Display, which combines a 12.3-inch information display with a 14.9-inch control display. It runs BMW Operating System 8.5 with QuickSelect. The cabin also gets an updated gear selector and My Modes.
A new Interaction Bar adds ambient lighting across the dashboard and front-door area. BMW said it was standard on i5 models and optional on the U.S. 530i and 530i xDrive at launch. The exterior also became more angular; an illuminated kidney grille and a fixed panoramic Sky Lounge roof were among the available options BMW described.

4. Driver assistance added eye-activated lane changes
BMW highlighted Active Lane Change with eye activation as a new driver-assistance feature. The system lets the driver confirm a suggested lane change with a glance, rather than a conventional control input, according to BMW’s launch announcement.
The announcement also listed other driver-assistance and parking functions, but equipment varies by trim and options. The presence of a feature in the launch announcement does not mean it is standard on every 2024 5 Series.

5. Gasoline powertrains were updated alongside the electric choices
BMW’s U.S. launch specifications show the 530i’s new four-cylinder engine producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The 540i xDrive six-cylinder was listed at 375 hp and 384 lb-ft before its mild-hybrid boost; production was set to start in November 2023.
Those figures sit alongside the i5’s electric output, but the powertrains are not interchangeable versions of the same setup: the 530i and 540i xDrive use gasoline, while the i5 eDrive40 and M60 xDrive are fully electric. All quoted outputs are BMW launch specifications, not independent measurements. The company said more than 10 million 5 Series cars had been produced by spring 2023.

What the U.S. launch prices were—and what they mean now
BMW’s May 2023 U.S. announcement gave these base MSRPs for the 2024 launch lineup. Each figure excluded $995 for destination and handling.
