The ZX-4R is built around a high-revving inline-four and more performance-oriented brakes, tires and electronics; the Ninja 400 uses a parallel twin and has a lower 2023 U.S. MSRP. The exact comparison depends on country and trim: Kawasaki’s 2023 U.S. Owner Center identifies the ZX-4RR KRT Edition, while the company’s global launch covered ZX-4R, ZX-4R SE and ZX-4RR variants.
1. The engines have the same displacement but different layouts
The ZX-4R has a 399 cm³ liquid-cooled DOHC inline-four. The 2023 Ninja 400 has a 399 cc liquid-cooled DOHC parallel twin. That cylinder-count difference shapes their character: the ZX-4R is designed to deliver its strongest performance higher in the rev range, while the Ninja 400’s listed peak arrives at lower engine speed.
Kawasaki Technical Review No. 186 (2025) lists maximum output as 57 kW at 14,500 rpm for the ZX-4R and 35 kW at 10,000 rpm for the Ninja 400. These are manufacturer figures, not independent test results. Kawasaki’s February 2023 global ZX-4R announcement gives 57 kW (77 PS), or 59 kW (80 PS) with ram-air pressure, and cautions that maximum output varies by market specification. Do not treat those ratings as interchangeable measurements for every country or variant.

2. The ZX-4R is focused on higher-rpm power
Kawasaki says the ZX-4R’s performance advantage becomes especially apparent from 10,000 rpm upward, and that its engine can exceed 15,000 rpm. The Ninja 400’s listed peak output is at 10,000 rpm. In practical terms, the ZX-4R is the more high-rpm-focused option; the Ninja 400 pairs its parallel twin with a lower listed peak-output engine speed.
Those figures describe the engines, not a measured difference in acceleration, lap times or fuel economy. The cited Kawasaki material does not establish those real-world comparisons.

3. The ZX-4R family has more substantial front brake and tire hardware
Kawasaki’s global ZX-4R family release specifies twin 290 mm semi-floating front discs with radial-mounted monobloc calipers, a 220 mm rear disc, and 120/70 front and 160/60 rear tires. The 2023 U.S. Ninja 400 ABS specification sheet lists one 310 mm front disc with a two-piston caliper, a 220 mm rear disc, and 110/70 front and 150/70 rear tires.
This is a comparison of the published configurations, not a claim about stopping distance or track performance. The ZX-4R figures come from the global family announcement, so exact equipment can differ by market or trim; the Ninja 400 figures are specifically for the U.S. ABS model.

5. Compare weight and price only with market and variant attached
The available figures are not a like-for-like 2023 U.S. comparison: the Ninja 400 values below are from Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A.’s 2023 specification sheet, while the ZX-4R weights are from Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ 2023 global launch release.
| Model and specification | Published weight | Published MSRP |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 U.S. Ninja 400 ABS | 366.0 lb curb weight | $5,699–$5,899 |
| 2023 U.S. Ninja 400 non-ABS | 361.6 lb curb weight | $5,299–$5,499 |
| ZX-4R and ZX-4RR, global release | 188 kg | Not stated in the global release |
| ZX-4R SE, global release | 189 kg | Not stated in the global release |
The Ninja 400 prices are U.S. MSRPs as listed for 2023; they are not current dealer quotes. Kawasaki’s current U.S. ZX-4R product page is not evidence of its original 2023 U.S. price. MSRP does not include applicable taxes, fees or dealer pricing differences. Kawasaki’s global release does not define the ZX-4R weights using the same terminology as the U.S. Ninja 400 curb-weight figures, so avoid treating them as a perfectly matched weight comparison.

Which one makes more sense?
The ZX-4R is the more specialized choice if the appeal is an inline-four that revs beyond 15,000 rpm, more substantial front brake hardware and a richer set of electronic features. The Ninja 400 offers a parallel twin and a substantially lower listed 2023 U.S. MSRP. Whether the ZX-4R is worth the additional cost depends on local prices, the exact trim, insurance and ownership costs, and how much the buyer values its high-rpm character and equipment.
Before comparing listings, match the country and model year, identify the exact ZX-4R variant, and check how power, weight and included features are specified. Kawasaki’s 2023 U.S. Owner Center lists the ZX-4RR KRT Edition’s owner’s and service manuals; use the model-specific documentation to verify the machine’s identity and equipment.
