The 2023 BMW R 1250 R is a 1,254 cc naked boxer roadster with 136 hp, broad torque delivery and standard rider aids that make it adaptable to commuting, flowing back roads and occasional touring. Independent testers describe it as composed and easy to use across ordinary road riding. Its main compromise is the unfaired cockpit: wind comfort depends on your height, speed and tolerance, so a test ride matters more than a blanket promise of touring comfort.
How does the 2023 BMW R 1250 R ride?
Its character is flexible rather than narrowly focused. BMW’s 1,254 cc boxer makes a published 136 hp at 7,750 rpm and 105 lb-ft of torque at 6,250 rpm. BMW attributes its broad delivery to ShiftCam variable intake timing and lift. Those figures describe the engine, while impressions of how it behaves on the road come from individual reviewers.
MCNews’s Australian test described effortless-feeling bottom- and midrange response, balanced and predictable handling, and suspension that dealt well with ordinary bumps. The tester found the standard Road throttle setting less responsive than preferred and noted perceptible boxer vibration and tall gearing in sixth. Andrew Jones’s webBikeWorld review emphasized tractable torque in town and a relaxed, flowing feel on country roads. These are subjective reports, not instrumented comparisons or guarantees that every rider will experience the bike the same way.
Together, those rides suggest a roadster that can move briskly without asking the rider to keep the engine at high revs, yet remains manageable in everyday use. It is not presented by these tests as a specialist track bike or as objectively superior to competing motorcycles.

Is it comfortable for longer rides?
The upright roadster layout and reviewers’ accounts make commuting and occasional touring plausible uses. But the R 1250 R does not have the fairing of a sport-tourer, and wind exposure is the practical limitation to assess first. WebBikeWorld’s tester found wind protection better than expected for a naked motorcycle; that positive impression does not establish how comfortable the bike will be for another rider, at another speed or over a longer distance.
Seat shape, rider height, posture, speed, weather, luggage and passenger needs all affect comfort. If you are considering longer trips, ride the exact motorcycle on both slower roads and a stretch at your usual cruising speed. BMW lists optional seat variants and a sport windshield, but the presence of either should be confirmed on the individual bike.

What changed for the 2023 model?
BMW’s US launch announcement described the 2023 R 1250 R as an update to its boxer roadster. For that US-market launch, the new standard rider aids were Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Integral ABS Pro and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), with ECO mode joining Rain and Road riding modes. BMW also listed a TFT display with connectivity, a Sport Core Screen, USB-A and 12-volt power sockets, and full LED lighting as standard.
BMW’s October 27, 2022 US release said the bike continued a tradition of combining agility, performance and comfort for twisty roads, commuting and two-up touring. That is BMW’s launch description, not an independent test conclusion.

The same release gave a US launch MSRP of $14,995 plus $695 destination and said the model was expected to arrive in spring 2023. Those are historical launch details, not a current new-bike price or an estimate of what a used example is worth.

BMW manuals caution that equipment can differ by national-market version and selected options, and that vehicle documents take precedence over manual reference data for vehicle-specific values. A listing or advertisement may mention equipment that is not fitted to the actual motorcycle. Check its VIN/build sheet and inspect the bike; ask an authorized BMW dealer to confirm accessory compatibility if you are considering a retrofit.

For replacement tires, do not choose by size alone: confirm the motorcycle’s required fitment and ratings against its documents and manufacturer guidance. The Malaysia page also lists WMTC fuel consumption of 4.75 L/100 km and CO2 emissions of 110 g/km for its own market page; these are not a 2023 US test result and do not establish a particular rider’s fuel economy or range.
How to decide whether it suits you
When comparing this BMW with another roadster or a faired sport-tourer, use your own routes and priorities rather than relying only on power figures.
