10 Downsides to Owning an Electric Vehicle—and Who They Affect Most

EV ownership trade-offs depend on your charging access, climate, driving habits, and local costs. Here are 10 downsides to weigh before buying.

Electric vehicles can cost more upfront, require charging access that does not fit every home, and take longer to refuel on some trips. Those drawbacks are not universal: a driver who can charge at home and mostly makes short journeys may experience them very differently from a renter who relies on public fast chargers or someone who regularly drives long distances in winter. The right comparison is between equivalent vehicles and the full cost and convenience of owning each for your own driving pattern.

1. The purchase price can be higher

In many markets, an electric vehicle (EV) costs more to buy than a comparable gasoline vehicle, even after prices have come down. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says battery-electric car prices generally fell in 2024, but a purchase-price gap remained in most regions. Its 2024 analysis also found that EV retail prices were generally higher than those of comparable internal-combustion vehicles in 2023. These are market- and year-specific findings, not a universal price rule; local incentives and used-car prices can change the comparison. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2025; IEA, Global EV Outlook 2024.

A higher sticker price does not settle the cost question. The IEA notes that lower fuel and maintenance expenses can make EV lifetime ownership costs lower, depending on the vehicle and circumstances. Consider the amount due after incentives, financing, expected energy and maintenance costs, and resale value over the years you expect to keep the car.

2. Charging access can be inconvenient

Home charging can make refueling part of an ordinary routine: plug in while parked and start the next day with a charged battery. Workplace charging can help as well. UK government guidance says most charging in the UK happens at or near home or work; that describes the UK, not a global share. UK government guidance on charging an electric vehicle.

If you cannot charge where you park, you may have to depend on public chargers. That can mean walking to a charger, making a detour, waiting for an available station, or planning around the locations and operating status of chargers. Before buying, check the charging options you can actually use near home and work, including whether parking rules let you leave a car connected long enough to charge.

3. Some road trips take longer

Charging stops are not equivalent to filling a gasoline tank: the time depends on the battery’s size, the vehicle’s charging curve, the starting charge, charger output and availability, and temperature. UK Department for Transport guidance gives an illustrative example of a 60 kW EV taking 24 minutes on a 150 kW ultra-rapid charger; it is not a universal charging time or a promise that every vehicle will reach a particular charge in that period. UK government guidance on charging an electric vehicle.

Charging also tends to slow as a battery approaches full, particularly in the 80–100% range. A trip plan that relies on charging to 100% at every stop may therefore take longer than one using shorter stops and a lower target charge. The practical trade-off depends on the route, charging network, and how much time you are willing to spend stopping.

4. Cold weather and driving conditions can reduce range

Advertised range is not a fixed distance in every season or driving situation. Cold weather can increase the energy used for battery thermal management and cabin heating, leaving less energy available to move the car. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explains that thermal-management energy can reduce energy available for propulsion; the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also identifies cold weather, accessories such as air conditioning, and high-speed driving as factors that can lower range. The size of the effect varies by vehicle and conditions, so a single percentage is not a reliable forecast for every EV. If you often drive long distances in winter, assess the specific model’s usable range for your routes and leave room for weather, speed, heating, and charger detours.

5. Battery capacity changes as the car ages

EV batteries degrade over time, but the pace varies; a given car does not follow a guaranteed, predictable schedule. A September 2024 literature review by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes uncertainty in both the level and speed of degradation and notes that performance data beyond the first several years are limited for many models. NIST Technical Note 2306 (September 2024).

NIST reports averages from a GeoTab database sample of 6,000 vehicles: 93.9% battery capacity after three years and 87.9% after six years. Those database averages describe that sample, not a forecast for every model or an individual car. For a used EV, ask about battery condition and warranty coverage for the specific vehicle rather than assuming its remaining range from age alone.

6. Battery replacement could be expensive, but is not inevitable

NIST’s September 2024 review reports battery replacement estimates ranging from $5,000 to $20,000, or $137 to $727 per kWh, depending on battery size, technology, and vehicle model. This is a literature-review range, not a current quote for a particular car. Diagnosis, warranty terms, parts availability, and repair options are model-specific. NIST also notes limited long-duration evidence; the range does not mean most owners will need a replacement. NIST Technical Note 2306.

7. Depreciation and resale value are uncertain

Resale value depends on the model, local demand, new-car prices, incentives, and buyer confidence in battery life. The IEA’s 2024 analysis found that EV depreciation tended to be faster than ICE depreciation during the period it reviewed and identifies depreciation as a major part of total ownership cost. That is not a timeless rule for every EV or market. The IEA also notes that greater confidence in battery lifetime can support resale values; depreciation can make a used EV more affordable for its next owner. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2024.

8. Public charging may reduce the energy-cost advantage

Electricity costs depend on where and when you charge, your tariff, the vehicle’s efficiency, and the charging network. UK Department for Transport guidance updated April 10, 2025, cites January 2024 costs of around 8 pence per mile for home charging a medium-sized electric car, compared with around 13–17 pence per mile for petrol or diesel fuel. In the same cited data, public-network charging was roughly equivalent on average to fueling a comparable petrol car. These are UK figures tied to the stated dates and assumptions—not current or universal prices. UK government guidance on charging costs.

For your own comparison, use your home electricity tariff and the public-charging prices you expect to pay, rather than assuming that every charging session costs less than gasoline.

9. Total ownership cost is hard to predict

A purchase-price comparison alone can miss important costs and savings. The IEA’s total-cost framework includes fuel or energy, insurance, maintenance, and depreciation. For an individual buyer, incentives, financing, annual mileage, electricity and fuel prices, insurance premiums, repair costs, home-charger installation, and the length of ownership can all change the result. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2024.

Compare equivalent vehicles over the same ownership period. Include the price after incentives, charging setup and energy, fuel for the alternative, maintenance and repairs, insurance, and expected resale value. The available evidence does not establish one universal EV-versus-gas cost winner for an unspecified driver.

10. Range planning can constrain certain driving patterns

Range is most likely to shape daily decisions when you regularly drive long distances, have few reliable chargers along your routes, or face weather and speeds that reduce available range. NIST’s literature review identifies range anxiety and charging access among recurring consumer concerns, while EPA points to weather and driving conditions as factors that affect range. These concerns are best understood as practical questions—whether a particular trip has enough usable range and a workable charging stop—not as an inevitable experience for every EV owner. NIST Technical Note 2306; EPA and DOE fuel economy guidance on EVs.

Before choosing a vehicle, check the routes you drive most often, charging access at the places you stop, and the range you need in your local conditions. The same EV can be easy to live with for one driving pattern and a poor fit for another.
