The Peugeot 9X8 was Peugeot’s Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) prototype for the FIA World Endurance Championship. Revealed in 2021 and raced from July 2022, its original configuration paired a hybrid all-wheel-drive system with an unusual aerodynamic concept: it had no rear wing. Peugeot said its calculations showed that the car could achieve high performance without one; that was the team’s engineering rationale, not proof that a wingless design was superior in every condition.
What was the Peugeot 9X8?
The 9X8 was built for the top class of endurance racing under the FIA WEC’s Le Mans Hypercar rules. Peugeot presented it as the next chapter in a line of top-level endurance racers that included the 905, which won Le Mans in 1992 and 1993, and the 908, which won in 2009. The FIA describes the name’s elements this way: “9” continues the marque’s endurance-car naming, “X” refers to all-wheel drive and hybrid power, and “8” follows Peugeot’s contemporary model-name suffix. FIA’s 2021 reveal introduced the original concept.
Peugeot Sport WEC Programme Technical Director Olivier Jansonnie described the project as an opportunity to explore unconventional ideas: “Designing the 9X8 has been a passionate experience because we had the freedom to invent, innovate and explore off-the-wall ways to optimise the car’s performance, and more especially its aerodynamics.”
Why did the original 9X8 have no rear wing?
The car’s most striking feature at its 2021 reveal was the absence of a rear wing. Jansonnie said the regulations allowed a single adjustable aerodynamic device but did not require that device to be a rear wing. Peugeot’s calculations and simulations led it to conclude that high performance was possible without one: “Our calculation work and simulations revealed that high performance was effectively possible without one.” Here, “one” means a rear wing. This explains Peugeot’s design choice; it does not establish that the approach was faster than a winged alternative across circuits or conditions.

The wingless layout belonged to the original revealed concept. It should not be treated as a timeless specification for every later version of the 9X8.
How was the original 2022 car powered?
The launch specification described a 500 kW hybrid all-wheel-drive system, with a combustion engine driving the rear wheels and an electric motor-generator at the front. These are figures for the original revealed configuration, not a guarantee that every later evolution used identical specifications.

When did it race, and how did its debut go?
Peugeot unveiled the concept on 6 July 2021 and targeted a 2022 WEC debut. The final car and livery were presented at Portimão on 20 May 2022, with the 6 Hours of Monza set as the first race. The 9X8’s appearance at Le Mans in June 2022 was for display, not competition; it made its competitive debut at Monza on 10 July.

Before that debut, the FIA reported that Peugeot had completed more than 10,000 kilometres of testing over 25 test days, including visits to Portimão, Paul Ricard, Aragón, Barcelona-Catalunya and Magny-Cours. That preparation did not prevent a difficult first race: FIA WEC reported that the No. 94 finished 33rd and the No. 93 retired. The result is a useful reminder that a prototype’s debut is also a test of race operation and reliability, not just of its concept or specifications.
The two-car entry comprised:
- No. 93: Paul Di Resta, Mikkel Jensen and Jean-Éric Vergne.
- No. 94: James Rossiter, Gustavo Menezes and Loïc Duval.
The FIA’s May 2022 preview covers the planned debut and testing, while FIA WEC’s race coverage records the Monza outcome.

Is there a LEGO Peugeot 9X8 model?
Yes. LEGO Technic set 42156 is a buildable model of the Peugeot 9X8. Peugeot’s 2023 announcement describes it as a 1:10-scale set with 1,775 pieces. Its front electric motor is a simplified representation of the real car’s hybrid system; it is not battery driven. Those are details from the official announcement, not a statement about current stock or price. Peugeot’s set announcement provides the model specifications.
