What the 2022 Buick GL8 Avenir was
Buick announced the 2022 GL8 Avenir for China on July 21, 2021. The Avenir was the premium expression of the GL8 MPV, with three cabin layouts and equipment aimed particularly at passengers in the rear. The name “Avenir” covered the four-seat Respect Edition, six-seat Elegant Edition and seven-seat Dear Edition; English trim translations can vary. Buick / SAIC-GM’s announcement lists the models and their original launch prices.

These are the Avenir’s original China launch prices, not current used-car values or a quote for a vehicle in another market.

Powertrain: a 48V mild hybrid, not a full hybrid
Buick specified a 2.0-liter variable-cylinder turbo engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard 48V mild-hybrid technology. The system comprised a 48V motor and battery, power-management module and hybrid-control unit. Buick described functions including braking-energy regeneration, E-idling, E-boost and smart charging.
Buick claimed the system improved fuel efficiency by 6% compared with the previous standard propulsion system. That is the manufacturer’s comparison; the announcement does not establish an independently measured or real-world fuel-economy result. What made the Avenir’s cabin distinctive
Passenger seating and comfort
The clearest Avenir-specific emphasis was rear-passenger comfort. Buick’s 2022 GL8 refresh announcement described second-row seats with wider armrests, heating, ventilation, massage, adjustable lumbar support and leg rests. It also highlighted premium pile carpet. Exterior details in the 2022 refresh
For the refreshed GL8 family, Buick identified Avenir-specific Matrix LED headlamps, 18-inch crown-style aluminum wheels and 2.5-meter welcome shadow lighting. These details were part of the family refresh announced in August 2022, rather than a change to the July 2021 launch-price figures.

Storage, quietness and connected features
Buick’s launch material also cited additional ports and storage, soundproof glass and rear reading lights. The eConnect system included vehicle monitoring and an air-quality display; connected navigation offered a 3D display and customized routes. Buick said the vehicle supported up to 20 advanced driver-assistance technologies and V2X connectivity. “Up to 20” is the company’s stated maximum, not a count of independently verified features on every configuration. How to interpret Buick’s claims
Buick presented the GL8 Avenir as a premium MPV and described its 48V system as part of its electrification effort. Molly Peck, then executive director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM, said the Avenir family had been “defining the premium MPV segment with strong demand since it was launched” and called the mild-hybrid system proof of Buick’s commitment to electrification for lower emissions. Those are company statements, not independent evidence of segment leadership or measured emissions performance.

In August 2022, Buick said cumulative sales of the GL8 nameplate had reached 1.6 million units. That company-reported figure applies to the GL8 line overall, not the Avenir alone. The same refresh announcement gave a family-wide GL8 price range of RMB 232,900–533,900; it should not be substituted for the Avenir’s distinct 2021 launch prices. Buick / SAIC-GM, August 19, 2022.
