The 2022 BMW R 1250 GS is a large, premium adventure tourer built around a strong boxer engine, long-distance comfort and equipment that varies by package. BMW’s US launch guide listed a $17,995 base MSRP when the model was announced in 2021; that historical figure is not a guide to what a used bike should cost today. The standard R 1250 GS reviewed here is distinct from the larger-tank R 1250 GS Adventure.
What the 2022 R 1250 GS is—and is not
Although the original title uses “dual-sport,” the cited sources describe the R 1250 GS as an adventure or touring motorcycle. Its appeal is broad capability: a substantial road bike with equipment and a riding position intended to handle varied routes, rather than a lightweight dirt-focused machine. The evidence here covers the standard GS, not the separate R 1250 GS Adventure.
That distinction matters when comparing specifications or shopping: equipment and measurements depend on market and configuration, and a GS Adventure should not be treated as the same model with merely different trim.
Engine and India-market specifications
BMW Motorrad India’s technical sheet describes an air/liquid-cooled 1,254 cc four-stroke flat twin with BMW ShiftCam. It rates the engine at 100 kW (136 PS) at 7,750 rpm and 143 Nm at 6,250 rpm. These are figures from the India-market sheet, not a promise that every market’s homologation or specification sheet is identical.

The same India sheet lists 249 kg road-ready with a full fuel load, seat heights of 850 or 870 mm, a 20 L usable tank volume, and cast-wheel tire sizes of 120/70 R19 at the front and 170/60 R17 at the rear. Treat these as market- and equipment-specific reference points; check the documents and actual configuration of an individual motorcycle.
US launch price and equipment packages
BMW Motorrad USA’s July 1, 2021 launch update set the 2022 standard R 1250 GS base MSRP at $17,995, with arrival expected in Q4 2021. That is historical US launch pricing, not a current used-market valuation. The guide listed Light White as standard and optional Triple Black, Rallye and 40 Years of GS variants with separate launch-era option prices.

Package content also affects what a particular bike offers. BMW’s US guide listed a Select Package at $1,900, including equipment such as hand protectors and case holders. The $4,000 Premium package added Dynamic ESA and other features. Those are launch-era US package prices and descriptions; do not assume a used example has either package or the same options. Verify its original specification and installed equipment, including luggage mounts, before valuing or buying it.
What one 2022 road test found
Boy Meets Bike’s November 6, 2022 review covered the R 1250 GS TE. The reviewer praised the engine and reported improvements to throttle response and quickshifter behavior compared with their earlier 2018 test. They still found the off-idle response somewhat soft and the quickshifter somewhat notchy. Those are one rider’s impressions, not established faults affecting every 2022 GS.

The reviewer found ESA broadly effective at balancing comfort and feel, but neither Comfort nor Dynamic suited their own weight and roads ideally. Suspension preferences are rider- and route-dependent, so a prospective owner should test the exact bike on representative roads rather than treating that verdict as universal. The review describes touring and mixed-riding ability, but does not provide a controlled off-road comparison or a head-to-head test against competitors.

The GS makes the most sense for a rider who wants a powerful, full-size touring motorcycle with the flexibility to take varied routes and who values configurable equipment. Its mass, seat height and premium specification deserve close attention, particularly for shorter riders, frequent low-speed maneuvering, or plans involving significant luggage and a passenger.

- Check reach and low-speed handling: the India sheet’s listed seat heights are 850/870 mm and its road-ready figure is 249 kg. Verify the exact bike’s seat setup and whether you can manage it confidently when loaded.
- Match it to your riding: think about how much of your use is paved touring versus dirt. The cited evidence supports broad mixed-use intent, not a claim that the GS is best for technical off-road riding.
- Confirm passenger and luggage needs: inspect the actual case holders, accessories and passenger setup. Confirm current compatibility for any cases rather than assuming every pannier fits.
- Identify the installed package: ask for the bike’s original equipment specification and check which electronic suspension and other options are present.
- Assess the individual motorcycle: review service records, maintenance status and regional history, and check applicable official recall records before purchase.
Available evidence does not establish current used prices, condition-based values, service or ownership costs, recall status, current accessory availability, or long-term reliability rates. Those should be verified for the particular motorcycle and location rather than inferred from launch specifications or a single road test.
