The 2021 Buick GL8 Avenir was a China-market premium MPV with a substantial driver-assistance and connected-cabin feature set. Its vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications were optional, not standard. Buick and SAIC listed sophisticated equipment, but their announcements do not establish that the Avenir was objectively one of the world’s most advanced minivans.
What changed for the 2021 GL8 Avenir?
SAIC Motor announced the 2021 GL8 Avenir and GL8 ES update in China on December 11, 2020, following the announcement the previous day. The Avenir was part of a broader GL8 launch range priced at RMB 313,900–529,900. Those are launch-era China prices, not current transaction prices. The 2021 Avenir generation itself had launched in April 2020.
The update’s most notable technology distinction was V2X: buyers could add it to any 2021 Avenir for RMB 10,000. It was an option, not standard equipment. The broader driver-assistance and cabin technology came from the Avenir generation’s original launch specification, with eConnect refinements described in the December update. SAIC Motor’s December 2020 announcement and its April 2020 Avenir launch announcement describe these features.
What does the optional V2X system do?
SAIC described V2X as exchanging information between vehicles (vehicle-to-vehicle, or V2V) and between vehicles and road infrastructure (vehicle-to-infrastructure, or V2I). The manufacturer listed eight functions:

In SAIC’s examples, the system could warn drivers based on messages from another vehicle after its stability or braking systems activated. Near an intersection, it could use roadside and traffic-signal information to suggest a speed. These are the functions as described by the manufacturer; the announcement does not independently demonstrate reduced collisions or establish how widely supporting infrastructure was available.
What driver-assistance hardware and features did it have?
At the Avenir generation’s launch, SAIC listed 23 driver-assistance hardware components: a forward camera with a Mobileye EyeQ4 image-processing chip, five millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, four one-megapixel panoramic cameras, and one two-megapixel wide-angle camera. SAIC said the system offered 20 driver-assistance functions, including lane-centering cruise, traffic-jam assistance, hands-off detection, and a door-opening warning.

SAIC said the system was designed for Chinese road conditions and met ASIL D functional-safety requirements. These are manufacturer statements; the cited launch material does not provide an independent assessment of on-road performance or safety.
How did the Avenir’s cabin technology work?
The launch specification included two 12.3-inch displays, a head-up display, eConnect 3.0, voice interaction, a Super ID account, in-car apps, and OnStar connected services. SAIC said over-the-air (OTA) updates covered nine core control modules, including infotainment, OnStar, driver-assistance control, body control, and the electronic brake booster.

The December 2020 update described eConnect 3.0 refinements, an embedded iFlytek voice system, and 100 GB per year of OnStar connected-app data for life. Those are original-market launch claims, not a guarantee of present-day service. Availability can depend on the specific vehicle, account, cellular network, location, and whether service support continues.
How do the four-, six-, and seven-seat versions differ?

These are equipment distinctions from the manufacturer’s launch material, not independent comfort comparisons. Other listed family equipment included dual power sliding doors with anti-pinch protection, a powered liftgate, 12-speaker Bose audio, 128-color ambient lighting, air-quality features, and Continental ContiSeal self-sealing tires. Actual equipment should be confirmed against the specific trim and market.
For price context, the original Avenir family launched in China at RMB 459,900 for the seven-seat version, RMB 465,900 for the six-seat version, and RMB 529,900 for the four-seat version. These April 2020 prices are separate from the broader 2021 GL8 Avenir/ES range price.

What were the 2021 Avenir’s engine and fuel-consumption figures?
The original Avenir generation used a variable-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission. SAIC Motor’s 2020 figures were 174 kW and 350 Nm. The manufacturer also quoted combined fuel consumption of 7.9 L/100 km and an 8.1% fuel-economy improvement. These are published manufacturer figures, not independently tested results.
How was the 2022 model different?
Buick’s July 2021 announcement for the 2022 GL8 Avenir specified standard 48V mild-hybrid technology: a 48V motor, battery, power-management module, and hybrid control unit. Buick claimed a 6% fuel-efficiency improvement versus the previous standard propulsion system. Molly Peck, executive director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM, described the later change this way: “The 48V mild hybrid technology is solid proof of Buick’s commitment to electrifying its portfolio for lower emissions.” Her statement concerned the 2022 update, not a 2021 hybrid system.
Does the evidence support calling it one of the world’s most advanced minivans?
The 2021 GL8 Avenir had an unusually broad set of manufacturer-listed features for a premium MPV, including optional V2X, a multi-sensor driver-assistance system, OTA-capable modules, and three distinct seating layouts. However, the available announcements are from Buick and SAIC; they do not provide an independent comparison with minivans worldwide, independent safety ratings, or real-world tests. The superlative is therefore best understood as promotional framing, not a verified global ranking.
