The 2019 BMW X5 makes a strong case as a versatile five-seat luxury SUV: both U.S. launch trims came with all-wheel drive, BMW published up to 72.3 cubic feet of cargo space, and a factory hitch enabled towing of about 7,200 pounds. That breadth came with premium new-car pricing, and a used example deserves a vehicle-specific check of its equipment, history, and recalls. The specifications make it a capable all-purpose candidate—not a universal best choice.
What the 2019 X5 offers
The fourth-generation X5 launched in the United States with two trims, the xDrive40i and xDrive50i. BMW described both as five-seat, all-wheel-drive models. Its published dimensions were 194.3 inches long, with a 117.1-inch wheelbase, 78.9-inch body width, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. BMW’s June 2018 launch announcement has the full specifications.
Two engines, two launch price points

These are BMW’s original U.S. launch prices, announced in 2018—not present-day used-car values. The 40i paired the lower launch price with a six-cylinder; the 50i added the V8 at a substantial premium. Both had AWD and seating for five. BMW’s pricing release gives the original figures.
Does it work as an all-purpose SUV?
Room for passengers and cargo
BMW listed cargo capacity at 33.9 cubic feet and up to 72.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. That range supports the X5’s case for everyday errands, luggage, and larger loads, though cargo volume alone does not establish how a particular load will fit. The vehicle seats five; this is not a three-row family SUV.

Towing and equipment
BMW listed a 21.9-gallon fuel tank and a maximum towing capacity of about 7,200 pounds with the factory hitch. Its materials differ slightly in rounding: one gives 7,209 pounds, while another describes a 7,200-pound hitch rating and 6,600-pound pre-wiring. Treat the maximum as configuration-dependent and verify the specific vehicle’s documentation and trailer limits before towing.
BMW’s launch materials listed standard features including a sport automatic transmission with launch control, Dynamic Damper Control, BMW Live Cockpit Professional with navigation and two 12.3-inch displays, adaptive full LED headlamps, Active Blind Spot Detection, Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation, and a panoramic glass sunroof. An optional off-road package included air suspension and a mechanical rear locking differential. Equipment can vary by trim, package, and original configuration, so check the window sticker or VIN-specific records rather than assuming a feature is present.

Safety ratings and recalls
IIHS rating
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety lists the 2019 X5 as a Top Safety Pick+, but the award applies only to vehicles equipped with specific headlights. IIHS lists Good ratings for crashworthiness and Superior for front crash prevention, with optional equipment noted for some system ratings. Check recalls by VIN
Recall 19V-513 concerned certain 2019 X5 xDrive50i vehicles whose high-pressure fuel pump may not have been attached according to specifications. It does not establish that every xDrive50i—or every 2019 X5—is affected. Check the specific vehicle’s VIN for open and completed recalls. BMW says recall repairs are free at an authorized center. What to check before buying a used 2019 X5
- Confirm identity and equipment. Match the VIN to the trim, original window sticker, and installed packages. Use the manual for the particular vehicle; BMW’s digital owner-manual page says a 17-digit VIN is used to access selected model-year manuals.
- Review service records. Ask for invoices and maintenance history, then confirm any claimed coverage with BMW using the VIN. BMW Ultimate Care covered defined scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever came first, for 2017-and-newer vehicles sold or leased by an authorized BMW center. That original period has passed for a 2019 vehicle; individual extended coverage or service contracts require separate confirmation. BMW’s Ultimate Care terms describe the program.
- Verify recall completion. Run the VIN check rather than relying on the model year or trim alone, and obtain documentation for completed work.
- Inspect wear and condition. Compare mileage and overall condition, and have tires, brakes, and other relevant systems assessed. A qualified pre-purchase inspection can help identify condition issues that a feature list or recall search cannot resolve.
- Compare the actual deal. Evaluate price alongside mileage, records, included equipment, and inspection findings. BMW’s launch prices do not indicate what a used X5 should cost today.
What the available evidence cannot settle
The published specifications and safety information establish capability and ratings, but they do not establish current used-market pricing, fuel economy, comparative reliability, repair costs, or a firsthand driving verdict. Consider those questions separately when evaluating a specific vehicle; do not infer reliability from the existence of a recall or from the trim name alone.
