Daniel Ricciardo set the pace in first practice for the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix, clocking 1:39.711 for Red Bull. Charles Leclerc, driving for Sauber, hit the wall near Turn 13 late in the session and lost his right-front wheel.
What happened in 2018 Singapore GP first practice?
Ricciardo led a Red Bull one-two on Friday, 14 September 2018. Max Verstappen was second, 0.201 seconds behind, and Sebastian Vettel placed third for Ferrari, 0.286 seconds off Ricciardo’s time. Lewis Hamilton was sixth, 1.521 seconds behind the fastest lap.
| Position | Driver | Team | Time or gap to Ricciardo |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Daniel Ricciardo | Red Bull | 1:39.711 |
| 2 | Max Verstappen | Red Bull | +0.201 seconds |
| 3 | Sebastian Vettel | Ferrari | +0.286 seconds |
| 6 | Lewis Hamilton | Mercedes | +1.521 seconds |
The 0.286-second figure for Vettel is calculated from the reported intervals: Verstappen was 0.201 seconds behind Ricciardo, and Vettel was a further 0.085 seconds back. BBC Sport and Scroll’s AFP-sourced report give Ricciardo’s lap and the reported gaps.
How did Charles Leclerc crash?
Late in the session, Leclerc misjudged the exit from the Anderson Bridge and clipped the wall at the right-hand kink before Turn 13. The impact cost him the right-front wheel. He was 20 and had recently been announced as Vettel’s Ferrari teammate for 2019, but at this event he was driving a Sauber.

Why FP1 did not settle the competitive picture
Singapore’s first practice session ran in daylight, unlike the later sessions held after nightfall at times closer to qualifying and the race. BBC Sport noted that daylight FP1 is traditionally less representative of the event’s true competitive order. Mercedes also skipped the fastest available hypersoft tyre and concentrated on heavier-fuel running, so Hamilton’s sixth place should not be treated as a definitive indication of race pace.

This is the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix FP1. The year matters: Ricciardo also topped Singapore first practice in 2017, while Charles Leclerc led FP1 in 2024 and Ricciardo finished seventh in that session. Those are separate events, not alternate accounts of the 2018 result. The FIA’s 2017 report and its 2024 P1 classification document those distinct sessions.
