The 2018 Hyundai Kona arrived as a new subcompact SUV with bold styling, a well-finished cabin and nimble handling. Car and Driver praised its fun driving character, but noted two important drawbacks: the standard 2.0-liter engine feels sluggish, and rear-seat space is tighter than in some rivals. For stronger acceleration, the Limited and Ultimate trims pair a turbocharged engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Is the 2018 Hyundai Kona a good SUV?
It can be a compelling choice if you want a small crossover that feels distinctive and enjoyable to drive. Car and Driver rated the Kona 8/10, highlighting its styling, quality-feeling cabin and crisp handling. That assessment comes with a clear qualification: the base engine is not especially lively, and the back seat is less accommodating than those of the Honda HR-V and Kia Soul, according to the review.
The Kona was all-new for the 2018 model year and sat below the Tucson in Hyundai’s US lineup. Its appeal depends in part on which trim and engine you find: the SE and SEL use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while the Limited and Ultimate get a turbocharged 1.6-liter. These are distinct driving experiences, not a case where every Kona has the same performance.
How do the 2018 Kona trims and engines differ?
Hyundai’s original US launch lineup paired the SE and SEL with the 2.0-liter engine and six-speed automatic. The Limited and Ultimate used the turbo 1.6-liter and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Car and Driver lists outputs of 147 hp for the 2.0-liter and 175 hp for the turbo. Front-wheel drive was standard; all-wheel drive was available.

| Trim | Engine and transmission | Original US launch MSRP |
|---|---|---|
| SE | 2.0-liter four-cylinder; six-speed automatic | $19,500 FWD; $20,800 AWD |
| SEL | 2.0-liter four-cylinder; six-speed automatic | $21,150 FWD; $22,450 AWD |
| SEL with contrast roof | 2.0-liter four-cylinder; six-speed automatic | $21,300 FWD; $22,600 AWD |

| Ultimate | 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder; seven-speed dual-clutch automatic | $27,400 FWD; $28,700 AWD |
Prices are historical original US launch MSRPs from Hyundai’s January 31, 2018 release, not current used-car values. The turbo engine is the more appealing choice if responsive acceleration matters: Car and Driver describes it as a performance strength, while calling the base engine sluggish. A used listing’s actual drivetrain and equipment should be verified rather than inferred from the model name alone.
What is the Kona like to drive and live with?
Handling and cabin

Infotainment and audio by trim
Car and Driver reports a 7-inch touchscreen in the SE, SEL and Limited, and an 8-inch screen with navigation and real-time traffic in the Ultimate. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. The Ultimate also adds wireless charging and an eight-speaker Infinity audio system; the review notes one USB port. What safety ratings and equipment does the 2018 Kona have?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports Good results in most crashworthiness categories, including driver- and passenger-side small overlap, original moderate overlap, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. Some individual tested subcategories received Acceptable ratings.
The IIHS award is conditional, not a blanket designation for every 2018 Kona. Its page calls the award “Top Safety Pick +” for vehicles with “optional front crash prevention and specific headlights built after May 2018.” Build date, headlight configuration and crash-prevention equipment therefore matter when checking a particular vehicle.

Headlights and build date
IIHS lists six headlight variations. For vehicles built after May 2018, Limited LED projectors and Ultimate LED projectors were rated Good, while SE and SEL halogen configurations were rated Poor. Pre-June 2018 Limited and Ultimate LED versions were also rated Poor, in part because their low beams exceeded glare limits. Check the car’s build date, trim and actual headlights; the trim name by itself does not establish which rating applies.
Automatic emergency braking
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection was optional in the SEL Tech Package and standard on the Ultimate. For applicable configurations, IIHS rated the system Superior in vehicle-to-vehicle testing and Advanced in daytime pedestrian testing. The pedestrian rating applies to SEL models with the Tech Package and to the Ultimate, not to every Kona.
