The evaluators’ clearest reservation was a loud cab, especially when towing. For a used buyer, the test is useful context—not a guarantee about an individual machine’s condition or a comparison with newer UTVs.
What the 2017 evaluation found
In a 2017 agricultural-use evaluation, Successful Farming’s Rick Sosebee reported that three evaluators put seven new utility vehicles through four tests. The article describes the test scope but does not provide a detailed head-to-head score table or a standardized protocol that can be reconstructed from its accessible text. Its findings are best read as reported impressions from those farm and utility-use tests.
Power and traction
The evaluators considered the Stampede’s 846 cc engine adequate, highlighting useful low-end and mid-range pulling power. They also found traction in 4WD and differential-lock settings comparable to many competing utility vehicles during tough climbs and muddy bottomland. That is a positive report for the conditions they evaluated, not evidence of how it ranks against current models.
Cab and controls
The report praised the seating, three-point harness, low flat floor, pedal grip in wet or muddy conditions, digital dash, and tilt steering wheel. It also singled out the extended-cab storage space behind the front passenger compartment: it can accommodate a small cooler or tools beneath the roofline.

The main drawback: noise
Noise was the evaluation’s most prominent criticism. Sosebee wrote, “The Stampede gets loud, and with a trailer behind the workhorse, it gets even louder.” If you expect to spend long days in the cab or tow regularly, noise deserves a place in your own test drive rather than being treated as a minor footnote.
Manufacturer-listed specifications—and what they mean
Textron’s 2017 model sheet lists the following specifications for the Stampede 900 model family. They are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements. Verify the exact year, trim, equipment, and condition of the individual vehicle before relying on them.

Those capacity numbers describe limits, not recommended payloads for every combination of passengers, cargo, accessories, terrain, and trailer. Textron’s parts-document excerpt for the 2017 XTR configuration also lists 600 lb cargo-bed capacity and 1,200 lb total weight capacity. The parts manual notes that payload, bed loading, tire pressure, and terrain affect stability and load limits, so check the documentation for the specific configuration and use it within its stated limits.
What to check on a used Stampede 900
A published evaluation cannot establish the condition of a particular used machine. Assess the vehicle you are considering, with extra attention to evidence of severe use and whether its servicing matches that use.

Ask how it was used and maintained
Textron’s service manual says consistent inspection, adjustment, and lubrication are needed to keep the Stampede safe and reliable. It calls for more frequent inspection and service under severe-use conditions, including dusty operation; prolonged low-speed or heavy-load use; frequent use or immersion in mud, water, or sand; short trips in cold weather; extended idling; and racing or high-RPM use.
- Ask for service records and whether the machine regularly worked in dust, mud, water, sand, or under heavy loads.
- Look for evidence that scheduled servicing was followed, rather than assuming low mileage means light use.
- Check records for initial-service items identified in the manual, including engine oil and filter, valve lash, and front and rear differential oil.
- If you are unfamiliar with safe service and adjustment procedures, the manual advises having a dealer perform the work.
The manual advises using original Textron Off Road parts or equivalent replacements. The official illustrated parts manual is specific to the Stampede 900 and covers assemblies including the air filter, drivetrain, cooling, electrical system, steering, suspension, seating, and truck bed. Confirm compatibility with the vehicle’s model and configuration before ordering parts.

Test the features that matter to your work
- Drive in the conditions you can safely reproduce and pay attention to low- and mid-range response, 4WD operation, and differential lock.
- Listen to the cab at normal operating speeds and, if towing is part of your intended use, assess noise with a suitable trailer and load.
- Check the seating, harnesses, floor, pedals, digital dash, steering adjustment, and extended-cab storage for fit and condition.
- Inspect the bed, hitch, tires, and any installed accessories. Confirm the configuration and documentation before treating a listed capacity or included feature as applicable.
Accessories and model-specific documentation
The 2017 manufacturer sheet lists accessory categories that include a hard top, split windshield, light-bar mount and 42-inch dual-row curved LED light bar, tubular brushguard, WARN Vantage 4000 winch, hood rack, and toolbox. Their listing does not establish that an accessory is present on a particular used vehicle, available now, or compatible with every trim or serial number. Check fitment before purchase.
Arctic Cat’s resource archive has a 2017 section for historical manuals, product sheets, brochures, and safety information. Use the official documentation for the relevant model and configuration, or ask an authorized dealer to confirm a maintenance or parts question when the paperwork is unclear.

The published evaluation does not provide a full comparison table, so a fair shortlist comparison should focus on the factors it does support rather than inventing a winner:
