In New Atlas reviewer Greg Smith’s road test, it was composed at low revs, smooth in traffic, and surprisingly accommodating over rough pavement. BMW’s model-year changes were evolutionary: EU4 adaptation, standard Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), and ABS Pro offered with the optional Riding Modes Pro package. That last distinction matters when shopping used: not every 2017 example has ABS Pro.
What changed on the 2017 BMW S 1000 RR?
BMW’s global model-year announcement described the 2017 S 1000 RR as adapted to EU4 emissions requirements and made DTC standard equipment. ABS Pro was included with the optional Riding Modes Pro equipment, rather than being standard on every bike. BMW also described a single-seat configuration with a passenger-seat cover and a passenger package offered as an alternative. Those details establish the factory options, not the equipment fitted to any particular used motorcycle. (BMW Group PressClub Global, 2016.)
For the U.S. market, BMW Motorrad USA said the 2017 update brought revised graphics, replaced ASC with DTC incorporating a lean-angle sensor, and made no change to the base price in that announcement. Those are U.S.-specific statements; packages and equipment can differ elsewhere. (BMW Motorrad USA, 2017.)
The engine remained a 999 cc inline-four. BMW’s 2016 U.S. press release published an approximate torque figure of 112–113 Nm, or about 83 lb-ft, across roughly 9,500–12,000 rpm. That is a manufacturer figure, not an independently measured result. Later S 1000 RR specifications—including equipment associated with newer generations—should not be substituted for the 2017 model.

How does the S 1000 RR behave on the road?
Smith’s New Atlas test is notable for the gap between the bike’s superbike identity and its everyday manners. He found it calm at low revs and reported that it could roll slowly in sixth gear without struggling. His summary was: “Its road manners are absolutely exemplary.” That is one road tester’s impression, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee of comfort for every rider.
Fueling and the quickshifter
Smith praised the smooth fueling and the up/down quickshifter. In his account, once moving, he could shift without using the clutch; downshifts blipped the throttle. This makes the bike easier to manage through changing speeds, but it does not turn a liter-class supersport into a relaxed touring motorcycle. Riding position, heat, wind exposure, and the rider’s tolerance for a committed sport-bike posture still shape longer rides.

Suspension and braking
The reviewer found the electronically adjusted suspension useful on rough road surfaces, with its effect more apparent on track than on the road. He also praised the braking force but was less impressed by lever feel: “The brakes – top-spec radial Brembo monoblocs – deliver terrific stopping force and bite, but I’m not a huge fan of the feel at the lever, which can be a bit vague.” These are Smith’s observations from his test, not a claim about every bike’s condition or a substitute for inspecting its brakes and suspension.
Does the 2017 S 1000 RR have cornering ABS?
ABS Pro, BMW’s cornering-ABS feature, was listed as part of optional Riding Modes Pro for this model year. It was not universal standard equipment, so the model name and year alone do not confirm that a used example has it. Check the specific bike’s equipment record or have a BMW Motorrad dealer verify its VIN and fitted options. Do not assume that a seller’s description of “ABS” means ABS Pro.

Who is the 2017 BMW S 1000 RR for?
It suits a rider seeking a liter-class supersport whose road behavior, according to Smith’s test, is more polished than its track-focused image might suggest. Its low-speed composure, quickshifter, and suspension adjustment add useful everyday flexibility; they do not erase the demands or performance potential of a superbike. Buyers prioritizing comfort or touring practicality should assess the actual riding position and intended use, rather than treating one tester’s positive road impressions as a universal fit.
