The 2016 Honda S660 is a Japan-market, two-seat open-top sports car with a distinctive mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Honda offered it with either a six-speed manual or a CVT with seven-speed paddle shifting. The specifications below describe the model using Honda’s published launch and service information; check the individual car’s grade, transmission and owner’s manual before buying parts or arranging service.
What is the 2016 Honda S660?
Honda announced the S660 on March 30, 2015, and Japanese sales began April 2, 2015. Honda’s model archive records production from March 2015 through March 2022, placing 2016 within the model’s production run. Those dates do not establish a distinct 2016 redesign. Honda presented the S660 as a two-seat, open-top sports car focused on driving enjoyment. Honda’s launch announcement and model archive provide the historical context.
The S660 was sold in Japan; the available Honda material does not establish that it was officially sold in every market. A particular 2016 car’s equipment can depend on its grade and configuration, so use its chassis and grade documentation rather than assuming all cars are identical.
What makes the S660’s layout distinctive?
The S660 uses a mid-ship engine and rear-wheel drive, with the engine positioned behind the cabin and ahead of the rear wheels. Honda’s launch announcement gives a 45:55 front-to-rear weight balance and describes a low center of gravity as part of the design intended to support cornering performance. This compact arrangement is central to the S660’s character; it is not a front-engine, front-wheel-drive kei car.

Manual or CVT: what did Honda offer?
Honda offered a newly developed six-speed manual and a CVT with seven-speed paddle shifting and a sport mode. The manual is the direct choice for drivers who want to select gears with a clutch pedal; the CVT provides paddle operation without a conventional manual clutch. Honda also described the CVT as suited to everyday ease. The launch announcement called the S660 the world’s first mini-vehicle with a six-speed manual, qualifying that claim as based on Honda’s internal research as of March 2015. Honda’s launch release lists the transmission offerings and launch context.

Identify the transmission first
Honda’s 2015 service data specifies different batteries and transmission fluids for the manual and CVT. For a manual car, it lists a 38B19R battery and Honda Ultra MTF-III fluid. For a CVT car, it lists an M-42R battery and Honda Ultra HMMF fluid. These are useful references, not substitutes for checking the car’s own manual, market specification and service documentation before ordering or servicing.

Match all four tire markings
Honda’s service data lists staggered tire fitment: the front is 165/55R15 75V and the rear is 195/45R16 80W. The front and rear sizes are not interchangeable, and the load and speed markings are part of the specification. Verify the individual car’s wheel and tire requirements before purchasing replacements. Honda’s 2015 S660 service data lists the tire sizes, batteries, fluids, fuel and tank information.
Check the specific car’s grade and history
Honda’s launch materials list α and β grades, each offered with either transmission. For an individual 2016 car, confirm the grade and equipment from its chassis or vehicle documentation rather than relying on a generic year label. The launch prices—¥2,180,000 for α and ¥1,980,000 for β, including Japan’s then-applicable 8% consumption tax—were historical suggested prices announced in March 2015, not current used-car valuations.
Before purchase, have the seller provide the VIN or chassis identification and confirm the car’s market, grade, transmission and maintenance records. Recall status, import or registration requirements, and present parts availability are vehicle- and jurisdiction-specific; the model specifications alone cannot settle them.
