The National Institute of Justice and National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center’s 2016 police-vehicle evaluation lists two AWD powertrains. The figures below are published specifications for those evaluated configurations, not a diagnosis of a particular used vehicle.

The EcoBoost configuration has the higher published horsepower and torque; the 3.7L configuration has the higher listed AWD axle ratio. Those specifications alone do not establish how a specific vehicle performs today: condition, maintenance, mileage, and prior duty cycle are vehicle-specific.
Fuel-economy figures
The 2016 government evaluation lists 15 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined for both evaluated configurations. These are the document’s estimates for those configurations, not a forecast of the fuel economy a former fleet vehicle will achieve now. Actual results depend on the individual vehicle and how it is driven and maintained.

Equipment varied by fleet specification
Washington State’s procurement record describes one AWD 2016 3.7L V6 fleet configuration with 304 hp, 279 lb-ft, a six-speed automatic, heavy-duty cooling components, a 220-amp alternator, and 245/55R18 all-season tires. This is an example of a specified procurement configuration, not proof that every 2016 Police Interceptor Utility has those components or that tire size.
How to identify the engine in a specific vehicle
Do not order service parts based only on the model year or the Police Interceptor Utility name. Confirm the engine using the VIN and build information, and check the under-hood information where applicable. For a former fleet vehicle, also compare the equipment actually present with its records; model-level specifications do not reveal its condition, mileage, maintenance history, or recall status.

Parts and maintenance fitment
Oil filter
Ford’s 2016 Police Interceptor Utility owner manual lists Motorcraft FL-500-S in its replacement-parts information for the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. Treat that as configuration-specific, not as a filter recommendation for every engine in this model year. Verify the VIN and engine in a current parts catalog before buying.
Tires and wheels
Ford’s manual says to use replacement tires and wheels that match the originals in size, load index, speed rating, and type, such as P-metric versus LT-metric or all-season versus all-terrain. Check the vehicle’s Safety Compliance Certification Label or Tire Label for the correct specification. The 245/55R18 size in the Washington procurement record applies to its listed fleet configuration only.

The manual also warns that substantially different tire sizes between the front and rear can cause the AWD system to default to front-wheel drive or can damage the system. This makes matching the individual vehicle’s specifications especially important; do not assume a size from another Police Interceptor Utility is suitable.
