Launched at Jerez on 1 February 2015, it was an evolution of the title-winning W05, developed for the second season of Formula One’s hybrid power-unit era. Hamilton won the drivers’ championship, and Mercedes took the constructors’ title.
What was the W06 Hybrid?
The W06 was the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team’s entry for the 2015 FIA Formula One World Championship. Mercedes unveiled it at Jerez, Spain, immediately before the first pre-season test, naming Hamilton and Rosberg as its drivers. The team called it the seventh Silver Arrow to compete in the Formula One World Championship. Mercedes’s launch announcement places the car in the context of the team’s continued development of the hybrid-era regulations introduced in 2014.
How did Mercedes develop the W06 from the W05?
Mercedes described the W06 as an evolutionary development of the W05 rather than a clean-sheet design. Its launch material points to changes across mechanical and structural systems, aerodynamics, and weight saving, combining incremental development with targeted innovation. That is the team’s account of its design approach; it does not quantify a lap-time gain attributable to the W06.
At the launch, Toto Wolff, then identified by Formula1.com as Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, said: “The launch of a new car is an exciting moment for everybody involved.” Formula1.com’s launch report also links to F1 Authentics, a place to check for official memorabilia; the page does not establish that a W06 item is currently available.

What were the W06’s technical specifications?
The following figures come from Mercedes-Benz’s period technical specification dated 1 February 2015. They describe the car as specified for that season, not current Formula One standards or an independently measured modern specification. Mercedes’s technical document lists:
| Area | Period specification |
|---|---|
| Overall dimensions | 5,000 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 950 mm high |
| Overall weight | 702 kg |
| Monocoque and bodywork | Moulded carbon fibre and honeycomb monocoque; carbon-composite bodywork |
| Suspension and wheels | Carbon-fibre wishbone suspension; forged magnesium wheels |
| Tyres and brakes | Pirelli tyres; carbon/carbon brakes, with rear brake-by-wire |
| Gearbox | Eight forward speeds and reverse |
| Power unit | Mercedes-Benz PU106B Hybrid, with a listed minimum weight of 145 kg |
| Internal-combustion engine | 1.6-litre, six cylinders, 90-degree bank angle, 24 valves |
| Listed engine limits | 15,000 rpm maximum ICE speed; maximum fuel flow of 100 kg/hour above 10,500 rpm |
The PU106B Hybrid comprised an internal-combustion engine, MGU-K, MGU-H, turbocharger, energy store, and control electronics. The listed engine-speed and fuel-flow limits belong to the 2015-era specification; they should not be read as present-day F1 limits.

What did PETRONAS contribute?
PETRONAS described itself as Mercedes’s title and key technical partner. Its account of the partnership says it developed bespoke Primax race fuel, Syntium engine oil, and Tutela fluids for the team, with the fuel and lubricant work shaped by the heat and efficiency demands of the 2015 hybrid power unit. PETRONAS’s 2015 season announcement describes the company’s contribution; bespoke race formulations should not be assumed to be identical to similarly named consumer products.
How successful was the W06 in 2015?
Mercedes-Benz’s 2019 season history records Hamilton as champion with 381 points and ten wins, Rosberg second with 322 points and six wins, and Mercedes-AMG Petronas as constructors’ champion with 703 points. Mercedes-Benz’s 2015 season review provides those season totals. They are results for the drivers and team in the championship; they are not a separate measurement of the chassis alone.
