The 2014 Ducati Monster 1200 marked a new generation of Ducati’s naked-bike family. Ducati launched it alongside the higher-output Monster 1200 S, with both using the 1198 Testastretta 11° DS engine. For a used-bike buyer, the key distinction is that launch specifications describe the models—not the condition or recall status of a particular motorcycle. Check its exact variant, documentation and 17-character VIN before relying on a model-year listing.
What is the 2014 Ducati Monster 1200?
Ducati introduced the Monster 1200 and Monster 1200 S at its EICMA press conference in Milan on 4 November 2013, describing them as the third generation of the Monster family. The company paired the 1198 Testastretta 11° DS engine with a new chassis and presented the engine as tuned for mid-range delivery and rideability. These are Ducati’s launch descriptions, not independent test findings. Ducati’s 2013 announcement provides the original framing and specifications.
Ducati’s announcement also listed a single-sided swingarm, adjustable seat height, lightweight wheels, high-specification brakes and suspension, and rider electronics: eight-level traction control, three-level ABS and three-level Ride-by-Wire linked to selectable Riding Modes. Equipment details can vary by market and motorcycle; confirm the specification of the individual bike rather than assuming every example has identical components.
Monster 1200 vs. Monster 1200 S
The clearest launch-era distinction supported by Ducati’s announcements is engine output. Ducati’s English-language 2013 release gave the S’s output as 145 hp and 92 ft-lb, and its dry weight as 182 kg (401 lb). Ducati’s Italian January 2014 announcement listed 135 CV for the base 1200 and 145 CV for the S. These are period manufacturer figures in the units published; hp and CV are not interchangeable labels, and the sources do not establish a directly comparable modern test measurement. Ducati’s launch material includes the English-language S figures and finish descriptions.

The launch sources do not establish a complete, market-by-market comparison of brakes, suspension or other hardware. If a specific component or finish matters, check the local-market brochure or verify the motorcycle’s equipment and records. The published figures do not tell you whether a used example has been modified, repaired or maintained well.
Recall checks: verify the motorcycle by VIN
Transport Canada recall 2021283 includes the 2014 Monster 1200. The notice, originally published 13 May 2021, says heat could damage the rear brake hose and cause sudden loss of rear braking; Ducati was to notify owners and direct affected motorcycles to a dealer for hose replacement. A model-year match alone does not show that a particular bike is affected or that its repair remains outstanding. Read the Transport Canada notice.

Australia’s government record REC-004957 covers a 2014–2020 Monster campaign involving rear brake hoses susceptible to heat damage, with affected owners able to arrange free replacement of rear brake components through an authorized Ducati service or dealer. The record lists 83 affected units for that Australian campaign only; it is not a global count. See the Australian recall record.
- Locate the motorcycle’s 17-character VIN and compare it with the bike and its documents.
- Enter that VIN in Ducati’s recall campaign lookup. Ducati says the lookup covers safety recalls announced within the past 15 calendar years.
- If a campaign appears, contact a local Ducati dealer to confirm applicability and completion. Ducati’s lookup directs owners to a dealer for campaign details.
- For a purchase, ask the seller for campaign and service records, then have a Ducati dealer confirm the VIN status rather than relying on a verbal assurance or model-year search.
Finding the right owner’s manual
A manual listing for “2014 Monster 1200 / 1200 S” is discoverable, but match the manual to the exact model, market, language and variant. Start with Ducati’s owner-manual and documentation service rather than treating a third-party index or generic search result as proof that an edition fits your motorcycle. A manual for the wrong market or variant may not match its equipment or instructions.

What to establish before buying one
- Exact variant: Confirm whether it is a Monster 1200 or 1200 S and compare the bike’s equipment and finish with appropriate market documentation.
- VIN and campaigns: Run the VIN-based Ducati check and ask a dealer to verify whether applicable safety campaigns were completed.
- Records and condition: Review service and repair documentation for the individual motorcycle. Launch specifications cannot establish its present condition.
- Manual fit: Match year, variant, language and market before using an owner’s manual.
