Volvo Cars Italy said it would be limited to 600 cars. Its defining features were carbon-look film on key exterior panels and matte-black Fondmetal wheels—not a distinct performance package.
What was the Volvo C30 Black Design?
Volvo presented the Black Design as a youthful, racing-inspired special edition based on the C30. The announcement was published on 8 April 2011, but the planned market launch was late May, alongside MY12. The 2011 date therefore refers to the announcement (or a catalog label); a particular car’s model year should be confirmed from its documentation.
Volvo Cars Italy described the edition as exclusive to the Italian market and announced a production limit of 600 units. That is the stated limit, not proof that all 600 were built. The announcement is in Italian: Volvo Cars Italy’s Black Design release.
What made the Black Design different?
The signature exterior treatment was Di-Noc carbon-look film, identified by Volvo as a product from 3 Emme. It was applied to the roof, side pillars, grille surround, and exterior mirror caps. Matte-black 17-inch Fondmetal wheels completed the look.

Other listed equipment included LED daytime running lights in place of fog lamps, cloth/T-Tec upholstery, a rigid luggage-compartment cover, and Black Design logos on the door sills and small plates on the floor mats. An optional interior plaque could be personalized with a name or nickname. Volvo also listed 18-inch Fondmetal wheels as an aftermarket option for D3 and 2.0 petrol versions.
Which engines and colours were offered?
Volvo Cars Italy listed three powertrains for the edition. The release gives output in CV, the metric horsepower unit commonly used in Italy.

The release said the car was technically unchanged from other variants in the range: “Dal punto di vista tecnico, la vettura rimane invariata rispetto alle altre varianti della gamma.” Translation: “From a technical point of view, the car remains unchanged compared with the other variants in the range.” These are the Italian manufacturer’s 2011 announced prices, not current used-car values.
Five body colours were listed: white, Orange Flame, silver, Electric Silver metallic, and titanium.

Was the C30 Black Design sold in the United States?
Volvo described Black Design as exclusive to Italy; the available manufacturer information does not establish a U.S. release of that edition. It should not be confused with the U.S.-market 2011 C30 T5 or T5 R-Design.
Volvo Cars North America’s February 2010 model overview described those U.S. variants with a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine rated at 227 hp and a six-speed manual or five-speed Geartronic automatic. The U.S. R-Design also had distinctive body styling and chassis changes. Those specifications do not describe the Italian Black Design’s D2, D3, or naturally aspirated 2.0 petrol options. The latter listed U.S. prices of $24,600 for T5 and $26,950 for T5 R-Design before destination; those figures are not directly comparable with Italian prices because market, date, tax treatment, and specification differ.

How to identify a period-correct Black Design
For a used car or restoration, treat the visual details as clues rather than proof of factory identity: carbon-look film and black wheels can be added to another C30. Check the car’s market and model-year documentation, then compare its engine and period equipment with the Italian edition’s announcement.
- Confirm Italian-market provenance and the documented model year.
- Check for the listed D2, D3, or 2.0 petrol powertrain.
- Look for the carbon-look treatment on the roof, pillars, grille surround, and mirror caps, along with matte-black 17-inch Fondmetal wheels.
- Compare the interior and equipment with the listed upholstery, luggage cover, LED daytime running lights, and Black Design markings.
Volvo says the concept was shared by Volvo Auto Italia and Eidon, a company working on special series; Berman technicians installed the carbon-look elements, and Fondmetal supplied the wheels. These details may help with period-correct restoration research, but the announcement does not establish current parts availability.

Volvo attributed this short remark to Michele Crisci, then managing director of Volvo Auto Italia: “Abbiamo voluto C30 Black Design” (“We wanted the C30 Black Design,” translation). It does not provide a longer sourced quotation from him.
