Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and tall, adaptable interior made it useful for work and fleet applications, while seating and some safety equipment varied by configuration.
What made the 2011 Transit Connect distinctive?
Unlike a full-size van, the Transit Connect paired a compact footprint with a tall interior designed to make cargo and passenger space easier to use. Ford’s U.S. owner’s guide identifies the 2011 model’s 2.0L I4 engine; Cars.com describes the model as front-wheel drive and available in XL and XLT series. These are U.S. specifications and should not be confused with European-market versions or the later North American Transit Connect Wagon announced for 2013.
How did the cargo and passenger versions differ?
The key choice was whether the van was configured primarily to carry goods or people. Cars.com describes the passenger version as having a second row, with foldable seating to create additional cargo room. The cargo van was aimed at work use, and its safety-equipment availability differed from the passenger model.
| Configuration | Interior and intended use | Stability control |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo van | Work-oriented cargo area; capacity and equipment depend on the specific vehicle. Cars.com reports up to about 135 cubic feet of cargo space and a Ford-reported payload figure of 1,600 pounds, both configuration-dependent. | Optional, according to Cars.com. |
| Passenger van | Second-row seating that folds to expand cargo flexibility. | Standard, according to Cars.com. |
Cars.com reports up to 59.1 inches from the load floor to the ceiling. Treat that as a model-overview figure, not a measurement guaranteed for every configuration. Its reported cargo volume of about 135 cubic feet likewise should not be read as a universal capacity for every van.

What engine and transmission did it use?
The U.S. 2011 Transit Connect used a 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 136 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque, paired with a standard four-speed automatic, according to Cars.com’s model overview. Ford’s owner’s guide specifies the 2.0L I4 and required 87-octane fuel. For maintenance or fuel guidance on a particular vehicle, identify it by VIN and consult the vehicle labels and the official 2011 Ford Transit Connect owner’s guide.
What safety equipment was included?
Cars.com lists front and side-impact airbags and front disc/rear drum antilock brakes. Electronic stability control with rollover mitigation was standard on the passenger version and optional on the cargo van. That difference matters when comparing used examples: do not assume cargo and passenger models had identical standard equipment.

What were the taxi and alternative-fuel applications?
Ford announced a Transit Connect Taxi for the 2011 model year and described engine preparation for CNG (compressed natural gas) or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) conversion. The announcement describes specialized fleet applications, not equipment fitted to every 2011 Transit Connect. It also does not establish whether a particular used van was converted, retains its original configuration, or remains compliant with conversion requirements.
In Ford’s archived announcement, Transit Connect chief engineer Rob Stevens said, “Compressed natural gas and propane offer more than sufficient power for vehicles because they are high-energy fuels.” That statement concerned CNG/LPG applications; it is not a guarantee about every conversion or vehicle. Ford’s release also noted that the Transit Connect won North American Truck of the Year in January 2010, referring to the 2010 model’s award context rather than a 2011 model-year award. What should owners know about operation and maintenance?
Ford’s U.S. owner’s guide is the appropriate reference for operating instructions, maintenance guidance, and product specifications for this model year. Fitment and service requirements can vary, so verify the vehicle by VIN and check its labels rather than relying on model year alone.
The guide cautions that unnecessary weight can reduce fuel economy and offers an approximate rule of thumb: about 1 mpg less per 400 pounds carried. This is Ford’s guidance, not a guaranteed result for an individual vehicle.
