Fiat’s launch range included petrol and diesel options, and the exact engines and equipment depended on the market. Its signature touches included 16-inch alloy wheels, denim-style upholstery with yellow stitching and Diesel-branded details.
What is the 2010 Fiat 500 by Diesel?
Fiat introduced the hatchback edition in January 2010 as a collaboration with Diesel, the fashion brand associated with Renzo Rosso. Fiat described it as a limited edition marketed worldwide. “By Diesel” refers to the collaboration and styling; petrol-powered examples were also part of the announced range.
The edition’s new signature color was Midnight Indigo Blue. Fiat also listed black and green paint choices. Availability of colors and equipment varied by market, so a generic description cannot confirm what a particular car was originally supplied with.
Which engines were available?
Fiat’s January 2010 launch announcement listed these hatchback powertrains. They are launch-era options, not proof that every country offered every engine or that every 2010 example has the same specification.

These figures come from Fiat’s 20 January 2010 launch announcement. Check the car’s documents and market-specific specification to identify its engine, emissions version and equipment.
How does the edition differ from a regular Fiat 500?
The distinction is mainly in its appearance and branded details. Fiat’s edition description lists 16-inch alloy wheels, satin-chrome-look trim and dashboard finish, and dark denim-style upholstery with yellow stitching. Details include a Diesel-branded fifth pocket and a Diesel mark on the gear knob. The 1.4 100 HP version was described with yellow brake calipers.

Those features are useful clues when viewing a car, but they do not by themselves establish its history, originality or current condition. Compare the actual vehicle with its documents and confirm its specification for the relevant market.
Is the Fiat 500C by Diesel the same car?
No. The 500C by Diesel is the related convertible, with a fabric roof, and its equipment and powertrain details should not automatically be applied to the hatchback. Fiat’s April 2010 announcement describes four Euro 5 engine versions for the 500C, 5- or 6-speed manual transmissions and optional Dualogic on petrol engines, with configurations varying by market.

Fiat reported 104 g/km CO2 for the 500C’s 1.3 Multijet II 95 HP configuration in that announcement. That figure applies to the specified convertible configuration, not every 500 by Diesel. See Fiat’s 15 April 2010 500C announcement for the convertible-specific details.
What should buyers check on an example?
Because specifications varied, identify the exact car before comparing it with another 500 by Diesel. A practical checklist:

- Body style: Confirm whether it is the hatchback or 500C; convertible details do not necessarily apply to the hatchback.
- Engine and fuel: Verify the engine from the vehicle documentation rather than assuming “Diesel” in the edition name means diesel fuel.
- Market and emissions specification: Check the original market and applicable emissions version; launch listings are not universal equipment lists.
- Transmission: Confirm the actual gearbox and specification for that engine and market.
- Condition and records: Assess the individual car and its service history. Fiat’s launch materials do not establish present-day reliability, resale value, or a universal market price.
- Edition details: Look at the wheels, trim and branded interior details, while treating their presence as clues rather than proof of originality.
Oil and fuel guidance for the 1.3 Multijet
For the 1.3 Multijet diesel, Fiat’s English owner handbook lists synthetic SAE 5W-30 oil meeting Fiat qualification 9.55535-S1 and names Selenia WR P.E. as the recommended product. The handbook says to follow the service schedule for change intervals. This is a diesel-engine specification from the cited handbook, not a recommendation for every petrol-powered 500 by Diesel. Confirm the engine and consult the handbook applicable to the exact car. A useful specification to give a supplier is “SAE 5W-30 Fiat 9.55535-S1 engine oil for 1.3 Multijet.”
Fiat’s owner manual specifies diesel fuel conforming to European standard EN590 for diesel versions. It also instructs drivers to wait for the relevant warning lights to go out before cranking when starting a diesel. Check the vehicle’s own manual for the applicable market and procedure.

Can you still get edition-specific parts?
The historic launch description identifies 16-inch wheels and distinctive exterior and interior trim, which can help when searching for replacement or restoration parts. It does not establish current stock, fitment or interchangeability with another Fiat 500. Before ordering, confirm body style, market, engine and VIN with the parts supplier.
