BMW’s official records identify its 2009 roadster as the BMW Z4, not a production model called the “2009 BMW Z6.” If you are checking a car, parts listing, or advert, confirm the vehicle’s badge, VIN, or registration before relying on Z4 specifications or buying Z4-specific parts.
Was there a 2009 BMW Z6?
BMW’s official material located for the 2009 roadster names it the BMW Z4. The available evidence does not authenticate a production vehicle identified as a 2009 BMW Z6. That conclusion is limited to the official material found; it does not rule out a custom, one-off, or unofficial vehicle using the name.
Marketplace wording is not enough to establish a model identity: one used-car listing surfaced with “Z4” in its headline but “Z6” in its description. A parts catalog’s use of “Z6” as an extra-information code on a 2009 323i component likewise does not establish that a Z6 car existed.
Which BMW roadster was introduced for 2009?
BMW’s U.S. press release dated January 6, 2009 announced the “2009 BMW Z4 Roadster.” BMW Group’s U.K. release, dated December 15, 2008, said the new Z4 would go on sale in May 2009. Its second generation is internally designated E89 in BMW’s historical account, which says it was introduced in December 2008.

BMW’s Global technical-data page dated August 24, 2009 lists the Z4 sDrive23i, sDrive30i, and sDrive35i. That global listing is not necessarily a complete lineup for every market or a specification sheet for any particular car.
How to check whether a car is a Z4 or something else
- Read the vehicle identification. Check the badge and registration documents, then compare the VIN with an authoritative BMW or vehicle-record lookup.
- Match the exact car. For specifications or parts, confirm market, build date, body and engine variant, transmission, and documented equipment. A broad 2009 Z4 listing cannot confirm fitment for a specific vehicle.
- Resolve conflicting adverts before buying. If a listing calls the same car both Z4 and Z6, ask the seller to provide the VIN and correct the description. Do not use the word “Z6” alone as proof of model identity.
What the official records establish
The official sources support the 2009 BMW Z4 and its E89 generation designation; they do not substantiate a production 2009 BMW Z6 or a Z6-specific lineup. BMW’s August 2009 global listing names three Z4 sDrive variants, but verify a vehicle’s own details before applying those data or ordering parts.
